2 Dear Parent/Guardian: Welcome to Mohawk College Summer Camp! Thank you for registering your child(ren) in Mohawk College s Summer Camp program. We have an amazing summer planned, filled with trips, special guests, games, crafts, activities and so much more! We cannot wait for it to begin in just a few short weeks. Our camp staff is working hard to create a fun and exciting camp experience for all campers. Our goal is to provide an energetic and safe atmosphere in which our campers gain new skills and interests, meet new friends, and most importantly have fun! Smiles are guaranteed. We have put together this package of IMPORTANT camp information, reminders, and contact information to help you and your child(ren) with the transition into camp. Please take the time to read all materials. Note: our camp is NUT FREE. You are invited to join us at the: CAMP OPEN HOUSE When? Wednesday June 17 th, 6:00 pm 8:00 pm Where? Mohawk College, Fennell Campus, Portable 11. This is a great opportunity for your child(ren) to meet their camp coordinators, counsellors and other campers. It is also a perfect occasion to become familiar with the camp setting and programs we offer. If you have any questions please feel free to contact us. 4 Mohawk College Summer Camp Information Package Contact Information Camp Office Phone: Fax: Website: mohawkcollege.ca/camps Mailing Address Mohawk College Summer Camp c/o Conference Services Box 2034 Hamilton, ON L8N 3T2 Tax Receipts - official tax receipts are provided during your online registration process Location/Parking All Summer Camp programs are based out of Portables 11, 12 and Room F144 at the Fennell Campus. Parking for drop-off and pick-up is in Parking Lot P6. Please see the attached map. Sign In & Sign Out Procedure On a daily basis, campers must be dropped off at the Drop Off Location (P6) prior to 9:00am. Specific classroom locations for each camp will be given upon arrival. On the first day of camp they will receive their t-shirt and name tag for the week. Additional t-shirts can be purchased throughout the week for $ Campers must be dropped off and picked up each day by a parent/guardian at the designated Drop Off/Pick Up Area. The parent/guardian must sign the camper in and out with the staff member on duty. Campers will only be allowed to leave with the person authorized to pick them up. **Photo ID will be checked during sign out to ensure the safety of campers.** Extended Care The camp program runs from 9:00am to 4:00pm. Early drop off is available beginning at 8:00am each day and late pickup runs until 5:30pm. During this time, campers will be provided with a variety of games and activities. There is no extra charge for extended care. Important: If you arrive past the designated extended care times, you will be charged $5.00 for every 10 minutes past the time allowed. No exceptions. Note: All drop off and pick up will take place at Parking Lot P6. Late Arrivals It is important that campers arrive each day by 9:00am. Programming begins promptly at 9:00am. Please do not arrive late. Campers arriving late will be required to proceed to the camps designated location without assistance. Absent Campers If your child is going to be absent from camp, please contact the camp office at Camp Counsellors The Mohawk College Camp Staff are College and University students with past experience as camp counsellors, coaches or with other children s programs. All staff require a police criminal record check and are trained in first aid and CPR.

5 What to Bring On the first day of camp all campers will be given an official camp t-shirt and name tag. Campers are required to wear their camp t-shirt and name tag each day. No exceptions. Additional t-shirts can be purchased throughout the week for $10. All campers are required to bring a backpack with a hat, sunscreen, light jacket or sweater, bug repellent, water bottle, running shoes, a bathing suit and towel to camp with them each day. Please do not send your child with sandals, heelys, or crocs. Campers are asked to leave valuables at home as Mohawk College will not be responsible for any lost or stolen items while at camp. Please note that cell phones, toys, cameras, MP3 players, ipods, video games, trading cards, etc are not permitted at camp. Cell phones must be kept in backpacks as campers are not permitted to have cell phones on them at any time during camp. Please label clothing/belongings. Items unclaimed by October 1, 2014 will be donated to the local Neighbour 2 Neighbour charity. Permission Notes If your child must leave camp during the day, a permission note must be given to the Camp Staff at sign-in. Please specify which day and time they will be leaving, who they will be picked up by and when they will be returning to camp. Lunch Lunch is scheduled at 12:00pm each day unless otherwise communicated. In addition, campers have two scheduled snack breaks throughout the day. All food and beverages should be kept in plastic or metal containers. Please do not send glass of any kind. Two 15 minute snack breaks are scheduled throughout the day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Please pack extra snacks as they are not provided. Please do not send money with your child. Vending machines and cafeterias are out of bounds. Parents wishing to pick their children up for lunch must notify the Camp Staff at sign-in and should ensure that their child is brought back to the camp by 12:30pm for the afternoon activities. Please note that our camp is NUT FREE and we request that you do not pack any peanut or nut products with your children s lunch. Parents: Although we ban peanuts from our programs, we cannot guarantee that the College environment is peanut free. Friday is Pizza Day campers will receive 2 pieces of pizza and juice. Campers may wish to bring an additional snack in their lunch. Sunscreen As many of our camp activities are held outdoors, parents are asked to ensure they apply sunscreen that is SPF 30 or higher before arriving at camp. Please also pack sunscreen in your child s backpack so they may reapply throughout the day. Due to sunscreen allergies, Mohawk College Summer Camps will not provide sunscreen. Weather In case of inclement weather (i.e. rain, heat, poor air quality) some outdoor activities will be adjusted to ensure the safety and well-being of all participants. For heat/humidity between 35 C- 40 C we will endeavor to provide frequent rest periods and fluid breaks during activities. Any heat/humidity temperatures over 40 C we will make an effort to limit physical activity and provide the appropriate amount of rest periods.

6 All campers are expected to participate in outdoor activities. To ensure the safety of every child campers must bring the following: suitable clothing for all types of weather, water proof sunscreen (SPF 30+), insect repellent (optional), a hat, and water bottles are also necessary. Parent Visits Parents wishing to visit their children during the camp day are asked to limit visits to the lunch hour (12:00pm 12:30pm). Offsite Trips A weekly offsite trip is offered for each camp. The costs of these trips are included in camp registration fees. In addition to the weekly offsite trip, some camp activities may occur at offsite locations that are within walking distance of Mohawk College (ie. Buchanan Park). The consent for these offsite activities was included on the registration form. The offsite trips for 2015 will be announced soon. Offsite trips of 2015 (WOW, Fusion & Jr. Hawks) include: June 29 July 3 July 5 10 July July July August 3 7 August August No Trip, Canada Day Bronte Creek Dundas Driving Park (All three camps)/ Coronation Pool (Fusion & Jr.Hawks) Brantford Zoo Binbrook Conservation Area Bronte Creek Dundas Driving Park (All three camps)/ Coronation Pool (Fusion & Jr.Hawks) Binbrook Conservation Area Swimming (may be included at offsite trip) It is important that Camp Staff are aware if your children cannot swim in deep water. Children identified by parents as a non or weak swimmer will not be allowed in the deep end and will be indicated by a red wristband. Regulations state that those 6 and under must be accompanied by a counsellor at all times regardless of swimming ability. If your child requires a lifejacket please send it with them to camp on the offsite trip day. Swimming is not scheduled every week. Photos Camp Staff will be taking photos throughout the week for a slide show and crafts such as scrapbooking. For any reason you do not want your children s picture taken for these purposes please advise the camp staff. Photo consent for purposes of promotional materials was included on the registration form. Photos of children (without names) will only be used if consent was given. Special Considerations (Behaviour/Medical/Special Needs Form) If your child has any significant behaviour, medical and or special needs and you did not include this information on the registration form, or feel that you should provide additional information please complete the Special Consideration Form included with this package. It is important that the form is mailed or faxed prior to the start of camp. Fax # Full disclosure is required.

7 Prescription Medications If your child requires any prescription medications (including Asthma Inhalers) or carries an Epi-Pen, please fill out the attached Special Consideration Information Form and return with your child on the first day of camp. All prescription medications must be turned in to a staff member at morning sign in. Prescription medications must be in the original pharmacy bottle, labelled with the patients name and the physicians ordered dose on the bottle (e.g. pills in ziploc bags are not accepted). Non prescription/over-the-counter medication, including vitamins and herbal supplements, will not be permitted. Asthma Inhalers and Epi-Pens may be carried on the child. If you wish to discuss your children s medications or medical conditions in advance, please contact the Camp Office at Accidents If a camper becomes injured, camp staff will complete an accident report and will administer first aid if needed. The Camp Staff, in conjunction with the s, will make any decisions regarding further medical care. Please note that Mohawk College has a staffed health clinic on campus which is open from 8:30am 4:30pm. If the injury requires further medical attention, we will contact you directly. A consent form was included on your registration form to allow the s or designated appointee to authorize all procedures (including admission to the hospital and necessary treatment) in the event of an emergency if contact cannot be made with the parents/guardians or emergency contact. Behaviour Guidelines It is the goal of the Mohawk College Summer Camp to provide a healthy, safe, secure and respectful environment for all campers and staff. All campers are expected to follow the behaviour guidelines and interact appropriately in a group setting. Please read and review the following Behaviour Guidelines and Program Rules with your children. Your co-operation is greatly appreciated and will help provide a safe, fun, and respectful environment for all campers and staff. Camp Behaviour Guidelines and Program Rules Campers are expected to participate in camp activities, follow the directions of the camp staff and stay with their camp group at all times Campers are responsible for their actions Campers must be respectful, honest and considerate of other campers, staff, volunteers and guests Campers must be respectful of Mohawk College property, property of other campers, staff or guests, the environment and offsite locations Campers are required to wear their camp t-shirt and name tag at all times Campers must ask permission to go to the washroom and must go in pairs Younger campers will be escorted by a staff member If a child does not follow the behaviour guidelines, the camp staff will take the following steps: 1. Staff will redirect the child to more appropriate behaviour. 2. The child will be reminded of the behaviour guidelines and program rules. 3. If the behaviour persists, a parent will be notified of the problem by a. 4. If a child s behaviour at any time threatens the immediate safety of themselves, other campers, staff or guests, the parent will be notified and asked to pick up their child.

8 5. Mohawk College Summer Camp reserves the right to ask a parent to pick their child up early, temporarily suspend the child from the camp program or expulsion from the program in extreme cases. The following behaviours are not acceptable and may result in the immediate suspension of a child from the camp program: Endangering the health and safety of other campers, staff, volunteers or guests Stealing or damaging Mohawk College or personal property of other campers, staff, volunteers or guests Continual disruption of the camp program Refusing to follow the behavioural guidelines and program rules Using profanity vulgarity, obscenity or acting in a lewd manner.

11 Campers Must Wear camp shirt and name tag at all times Get permission to leave group i.e. washroom o Younger campers must go with staff member o Older campers may go in pairs Respect property of others and the College Respect the personal space of others Treat others how you would like to be treated Stay within designated areas Follow instructions of Camp staff, College staff, special guests and off-site staff Participate in all camp activities Refrain from using inappropriate language or lewd behaviour Valuables and other Items Cell phones (must be kept in backpacks), MP3 players, cameras, ipods, game boys, toys, Webkinz and other electronic devices are not permitted at camp The College and Camp staff are not responsible for lost, stolen or damaged articles Lunch Children are responsible for their own lunch, except Friday when pizza and drinks will be supplied, you may also wish to send additional snacks for lunch We are a NUT FREE environment, so please do not send nuts or nut products in lunches and snacks. Campers will not be permitted to eat any food or snacks that may contain nuts (many campers have severe nut allergies) Campers are not permitted to use vending machines or cafeterias Partial frozen drinking boxes are a good way to keep lunches cold Juice boxes are better thirst quenchers than juice drinks (Kool-Aid, etc) because of their lower sugar content What to bring A lunch, drinks and snacks Running shoes Outdoor clothing (light jacket, sunscreen, bug repellent, running shoes etc) Baiting Suit & Towel (Please pack these items each day as unscheduled water games may be added on warm days) What not to bring Money for lunches or snacks Nut products for lunches or snacks Valuables such as: cameras, MP3 players, ipods, game boys, trading cards, toys, Webkinz etc. Sandals, heels, crocs or inappropriate clothing The Camp Staff are looking forward to an exciting summer, filled with great memories and lasting friendships!
