1 National Youth Leadership Training 2016 What is National Youth Leadership Training? National Youth Leadership Training is a program of the National Council of the, delivered to youth by the local BSA Council. The NYLT course is a seven-day, six-night personal development and leadership skills course for youth leaders presented in an outdoor setting and camping format. The conducts the course using the national standardized syllabus, under the leadership of quality program trained volunteers. This year s Course will be delivered twice. Session 1 will take place June , and Session 2 (Pack & Paddle) will be held August 21-27, Both sessions will be held at, near Munising, Michigan. Who is qualified to attend? The NYLT course trains youth from troops, crews, and ships. The Course is co-educational and Boy Scouts, as well as both female and male Venturers are eligible, and encouraged, to attend. Participants do not have to be serving currently in a leadership role, but should have the skills and abilities to do so in the future. Participating Scouts and Venturers must be at least 13 years of age by June 12, Additionally, Boy Scouts must be First Class rank or higher. Session 2, Pack and Paddle participants must be at least 13 years of age by August 21, 2016, and must have sufficient maturity to function in an adventure based wilderness camping, hiking, canoe travel environment. Additionally, Session 2 participants must have passed the BSA swimmers test within this calendar year; evidence of this would be a Participant s swim tag from summer camp, or a letter from their unit leader. The participant s Unit Leader must sign off on the participant s preparedness for this course (Session 1, or Session 2), as noted in the Unit Leader s Role below. Uniform Requirements Session 1: June 12 18: two: (2) full, Class A Uniforms are required; (shirt, pants/shorts, belt and socks) (this is to allow for general hygiene and laundering; two belts are not required) Session 2: August Pack & Paddle: one (1) full Class A uniform is required (shirt, pants/shorts, belt, and socks) for travel, and at camp and for opening and closing activities. Most of the time the uniform of the day will be class B, or activity uniforms of Scouting or NYLT T shirts, belt, and Scout or Venture pants or shorts. The Unit Leader s Role (Troop Scoutmaster, Crew Advisor, or Ship Skipper) We expect the Unit Leader to work with the Scouts/Venturers prior to the course to provide them with an understanding of the basics of leadership. (See Introduction to Leadership Skills pages in the Scoutmaster s Handbook) Also, there are certain outdoor skills that are needed to attend the course: Tent set-up and takedown, preparing and eating meals out of doors, and general camping procedures (the participant should have slept overnight in a tent prior to attending NYLT, and NYLT should not be their first experience of being away from parents overnight. Also, regarding Session 2, Pack and Paddle: Participants must have sufficient maturity to function in an adventure based wilderness camping, hiking, canoe travel environment. Additionally, Session 2 Participants must have passed the BSA swimmers test within this calendar year. The Unit Leader must sign the Unit Leader s Approval form certifying the participant s preparedness for this course. Registration Information Register online at A $130 deposit is required per Participant (total fee is $ per Participant if paid in full by April 1, 2016). Deposits and full Payments are transferable but not refundable. The fee includes transportation to and from course location (, Doe Lake Road, Munising Michigan) from selected locations (Sheboygan, Green Bay, Appleton, Menominee), T-shirt, Council Shoulder Patch, Trained patch, other course and training materials, food, loads of challenges and lots of fun. Space is limited to the first 84 participants, week one June 12-18, 2016 and 36 participant s week two August 21-27, History shows us that our NYLT courses fill-up FAST, so register as soon as you are able, to avoid the waiting list.

2 What are the course objectives? To empower Participants: To be tomorrow s leaders today To lead themselves; that they may serve others by leading them With the confidence and knowledge to run the unit program. With a working knowledge of the skills needed for leadership By preparing them to relate skills learned to others in their home unit and beyond. By providing the opportunity share ideas and experiences with youth from other units. By the creation of an atmosphere where youth will experience their BSA program at its best.. How is the course set up? In order to accomplish the objectives the course is structured as a scout troop with the Scoutmaster, Assistant Scoutmasters, Senior Patrol Leader, Assistant Senior Patrol Leaders, and Troop Guides delivering the course to the participants. The Participants, on arrival, are placed in a patrol (team) composed of 6 Scouts (Youth from the same home unit will be in different patrols). A youth Guide is assigned to each patrol to advise and to be a resource to the Participants throughout the learning process. The troop format provides an opportunity for youth to practice newly learned skills while participating in a model troop. The Conference guidelines and rules are the same as those found in the Scout Oath and Law, the Outdoor Code, and other national and council practices and procedures.

3 The Patrol Method The patrol method is used exclusively during the course. Patrols are on their own to set up campsites, cook meals, construct Team projects and plan and carry out other activities without direct adult supervision. Patrol leadership changes daily to give all youth a chance to be a Patrol Leader or an Assistant. Although this provides hands-on opportunities for each youth to grow in leadership, it also requires that each youth be mature enough to handle the independence given. Orientation Meeting There will be a mandatory orientation meeting in May for Parents, Scouts/Venturers and Scoutmasters/Crew Advisors of units sending Participants. The meeting will be held at Zion Lutheran Church 400 North Sawyer Ave in Oshkosh. The exact date will be ed out to everyone! The meeting will start at 6 PM conclude at 8:30 PM although Staff will remain to answer specific questions. Objectives of the meeting are to verify that all registration paperwork is complete, introduce staff to parents and participants, provide an interactive overview of the course and pertinent information, and answer any questions that you might have.
