1 The National Youth Leadership Training Program (NYLT) is Boy Scouting s premiere youth leadership development program. It is offered in Councils throughout the country. NYLT is an intensive, fun, hands-on, and challenging six (6) day program that combines outdoor adventure and classroom instruction to provide Scouts with experiences and tools for becoming great leaders. NYLT focuses on the concepts of what a leader must BE, what a leader must KNOW, and what a leader must DO. Participants learn and develop skills such as communication; problem solving; presentation making; team development; working with adult leaders and youth in administrative areas; and ethical decision-making. These skills learned at NYLT will benefit Scouts not only as youth leaders but in other aspects of his life. This course is open to any youth registered in a Boy Scout Troop between the ages of 13 and 18 on May 29, 2015 and have earned at least the rank of First Class. Venture Scouts must be between the ages of 13 and 21 on May 29, The participants should demonstrate an appropriate maturity level and be approved by their Scoutmaster/Crew Advisor. Scoutmasters and Crew Advisors are encouraged to nominate your youth leaders as soon as possible. The course is expected to reach the 48 participant limit. Youth participants will be considered nominated once a completed registration packet is received along with the full course fee. Those youth who are not accepted for this course will receive a full refund of the course fee. Youth and Adult Leaders will be notified by mail as soon as a youth is accepted for the course. The course models a month in the life of a scouting unit leading up to a big outdoor experience (an overnight outpost camp). The course uses the patrol method and presents model Patrol Leader Council meetings. Patrol leadership changes daily to give all participants a chance to be a Patrol Leader or an Assistant. Although this provides hands-on opportunities for each participant to grow in leadership, it also requires that each participant be mature enough to handle the independence given him. Experience has shown that participants younger than 13 years of age oftentimes lack the physical and emotional maturity necessary to benefit fully from this program. Patrols are challenged early in the course to develop a presentation for the end of the course on their Quest for the Meaning of Leadership. While the challenge is designed to have them go through the four stages of team development, it also helps individual participants internalize the leadership skills and concepts being presented along the way. Throughout the course, the staff will be modeling the concepts and skills that are the core content of the course. The focus of each session is not only knowledge but also giving the youth a Toolbox of Skills that equips them with the How of leadership. In order to accomplish these objectives, on arrival at camp, the participants are placed in a Patrol composed of six (6) participants. A Troop Guide is assigned to each team to advise and be a resource to the participants throughout the course. The troop setting provides an opportunity for participants to practice newly learned skills providing the home unit with improved effectiveness and enthusiasm in its youth leaders. The course guidelines and rules are the same for those found in the Scout Oath and Law, the Venturing Oath and Code, the Outdoor Code, and other National Council practices and procedures.
2 Who should attend? To be eligible for this course Scouts must have attained the rank of First Class, and be 13 years of age by May 29, The Scout/Venture Scout must be an experienced camper with good camping, hiking, and outdoor cooking skills. He/she should be familiar with the Patrol Leader s Handbook or the Venturing Leader Manual prior to arriving at camp, and have held or have the potential to hold a leadership position in his/her unit. She/he must agree to spend the entire scheduled time participating in the National Youth Leadership Training Course. NYLT is not a summer camp - rather it is a leadership-training course in an outdoor environment. There are no rank advancement opportunities during the week. The purpose of the course is to develop leadership skills that Scouts/Venturers will use in their home unit and throughout their lives. When should I arrive? The course is scheduled to start at 6 pm on May 29, All participants should be onsite are checked-in by that time. Registration will open at 4 pm. A copy of the Scout s medical form should be brought at time of registration. Arrival for the second weekend can begin anytime after 2 pm on June 5, Participants will need to setup camp before the course starts at 6 pm that evening. Note: For participants traveling long distances only, early arrival may be available but should be coordinated with the Course Director. To nominate a youth leader for the 2015 NYLT course: Fill out the registration form and mail it to with $250 per participant. Keep this packet as it contains all the necessary pre-course information. The fee includes a course T-shirt, patch, training materials, food, lodging, loads of challenges, and lots of FUN! Space is limited to the first 48 applicants. Other Questions?
