1 Concussion Awareness Training: From Injury to Recovery S AT U R D A Y, S E P T E M B E R 1 5, SCHAETZEL CENTER SCRIPPS MEMORIAL HOSPITAL LA JOLLA, CALIFORNIA
2 Course Introduction Course Overview Concussions are a type of traumatic brain injury caused by a bump or blow to the head or body that causes the brain to move and collide with the skull causing injury. There are many ways to get a concussion including falls, car crashes, bike accidents, and partaking in sporting activities. In fact, the number of recorded concussion cases has doubled in the last decade alone. This steady increase has prompted the Centers for Disease Control to declare concussions a health epidemic in the United States. Scripps Health s Concussion Awareness Training program is designed to educate and promote improved patient outcomes with regards to concussion patients. The course will be taught from variety of perspectives including that of the neurologist, primary care physician, ER physician, and athletic trainer. Participants will learn what signs to look for when assessing a patient or athlete, the best way to manage a concussion, and when to allow a patient to return to normal activities. Educational Objectives After attending this activity, participants should be able to: Describe concussion and the potential consequences of this injury. Recognize concussion signs and symptoms and how to respond. Implement proper procedures to manage a suspected concussion. Illustrate the impact sports-related concussion can have on players.
