3 WHAT IS CAREER CONNECTION? Career Connection is the web-based career services system. It is a fully integrated system to access: On-Campus Recruitment and job searches, post resumes, and view other Career Center events. You are able to access Career Connection 24 hours a day, 7 days a week from any computer with internet access. All instructions to use Career Connection can be found on the Career Center website look for the On-Campus Recruitment Program link. Why do I need an account? The On-Campus Recruitment program uses Career Connection to schedule all on-campus interviews. You need an account to sign up for an interview time slot and to submit your resume. Career Connection can also be used to submit resumes to job postings, research employer information, and view Career Center events.

4 REQUIREMENTS Requirements May Include: Your graduation date or class level Your GPA Certain coursework Requirements differ between companies You may sign up for interviews 14 days before the interview date. Important Notes: *You must meet all the minimum requirements to sign up, that is why it is critical that you have a completed profile in Career Connection.

5 STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS 1. Register with Career Connection. Go to the Career Center Website ( Click Career Connection Click New user registration Enter username (SacLinkID, ie dg234) Enter registration password (password can be obtained by clicking on the following link ) Create Student Account Click Submit 2. View Orientation Workshop.

6 Student Document INSTRUCTIONS - Cont. 3. UPLOAD RESUME. Log into Career Connection, click Resume Documents to upload your resume. Click Add New to begin the process of uploading a resume. 4. LABEL EACH RESUME. Label each resume with a company name or job title and browse your computer for the location of the resume. Click Submit.

7 INSTRUCTIONS - Cont. 5. BEGIN SEARCH. Click on the Job Search tab and click on the Job Postings drop down to get to the filters. 6. SHOW ME. Click Show Me in the job postings. Choose On- Campus Interviews or OCR Interviews That I Qualify For on the drop down menu, then click Search.

8 INSTRUCTIONS - Cont. 7. VIEW OCR LIST. Now you can view the employer list of information for on-campus interviews.

9 INSTRUCTIONS - Cont. 8. VIEW POSITION. Click on a specific job title to view position. This is what you will see for each position:

10 INSTRUCTIONS - Cont. OPEN VS. OPEN/PRE-SELECT Open Sign-Up: Students who meet the company requirements may sign up for an interview appointment. The requirements are: Major GPA Citizenship Sometimes Graduation Date Open/Pre-Select: A portion of a schedule formed by the company will be saved for pre-selected students. Students are required to their resume to the recruiter and the recruiter may or may not contact you to be a part of the pre-select schedule. A schedule with an overflow section will be marked with an asterisk next to the job title. Such as:

11 INSTRUCTIONS - Cont. 9. DO YOU QUALIFY? Look to the right side of the page for information on the application status. You will be able to submit a resume if you qualify or be given the reasons why you do not qualify.

12 Qualified Candidates will see: CANDIDATES WHO QUALIFY If you qualify you will be able to view and sign up for an interview time.

13 CANDIDATES WHO DO NOT QUALIFY Those who do not qualify will be able to see the reason why they are not qualified.

14 INSTRUCTIONS - Cont. 10. SEND RESUME. If you are not able to sign up for an interview appointment, you are encouraged to send your resume directly to the contact person.

15 INSTRUCTIONS - Cont. 11. TIME SENSITIVE. Career Connection is time sensitive, first priority will have 14 calendar days before the interview to sign up for a time slot.

16 NO-SHOW/CANCELLATION POLICY You may schedule, re-schedule or cancel appointments via Career Connection up to two days before the interview date. If you must cancel an interview within 24 hours of your appointment time please notify the OCR staff as soon as possible at or If you cancel within 24 hours or do not show up for your interview, you will be placed on a suspension status until an apology letter is written to the recruiter. Letters must be brought to the Career Center in a stamped addressed envelope addressed to the company recruiter. Once the Career Center staff receives the letter your privileges will be restored. The second time you cancel within 24 hours or do not show up you will FOREFIT YOUR PRIVILEGES TO PARTICIPATE IN THE ON-CAMPUS RECRUITMENT PROGRAM. This action will cause all remaining on-campus interviews to be cancelled and open the interview slots to other students.

18 CALCULATING YOUR MAJOR GPA INSTRUCTIONS 1. List all the completed courses needed for your Major. 2. List the grade received and earned units for each course. 3. List the grade point for each grade received. 4. Multiply the units by the grade points. 5. Total the units and quality points. Example Please see unofficial transcripts to view all categories. 19 PREPARING FOR YOUR INTERVIEW RESUMES To successfully secure an interview time, your resume must be uploaded into Career Connection. It is also REQUIRED that you bring multiple copies of your resume to each interview. Visit the Career Center to have your resume reviewed by Career Center staff. You can purchase single sheets or a stack of resume paper at Copy Graphics in the Riverfront Center on campus. The most professional paper color is white, off white or beige. RESEARCH View and research the companies that you have an interview with. Look at the company overview and be ready to discuss the history, mission, and corporate culture. Study the qualifications of the position and be prepared to answer several interview questions. Also be sure to develop questions to ask pertaining to the position.

20 PREPARING FOR YOUR INTERVIEW Cont. PARTICIPATE Log on to Career Connection to see which companies will be on campus. Check for Career Fairs, Company Presentations, and tabling events. Attend as many events as you can. Prepare for each event by researching the company, dressing professionally and bringing multiple copies of your resume. CANCELLATIONS Log into Career Connection, Click Scheduled OCR Interviews, Click Scheduled Interviews, Click Cancel or Re-Schedule, and Submit. 21 PREPARING FOR YOUR INTERVIEW Cont. COMPANY INFORMATION SESSIONS Some companies hold an Information Session for students before their on-campus interview date(s). This is an excellent opportunity for students to learn more about the employer s expectations and receive insight on the company and the open position. To view a list of companies who have information sessions scheduled log into Career Connection and follow these steps: Click the Career Fair / Events / Workshops tab Click the Information Sessions tab Enter the dates or employer you are looking for and click Search

22 ON YOUR INTERVIEW DAY Arrive 15 minutes early for your interview Dress professionally Bring multiple copies of your resume Collect business cards or make sure to get your interviewer s name and contact information Write thank you letters and make follow up phone calls.

23 PREPARING FOR CAREER FAIRS Career Fairs are an excellent place for students to gather information about companies and organizations that interest them. These fairs offer an opportunity for students to meet employers and learn about the fields in which they work. Students will also be able to obtain information about current and future career opportunities. Before the Fair 1. View a list of companies attending the Career Center event by registering to use Career Connection at 2. Select companies that interest you and research them by visiting their website. For additional information on related fields and industries, visit the Career Center. 3. Prepare a resume that provides an overview of your education and experience. Visit the Career Center for a resume review. Once your resume has been updated, make several copies to bring to the fair.

24 PREPARING FOR CAREER FAIRS Cont. Before the Fair Cont. 4. Prepare a short background statement on your education and experience. In addition, develop questions to ask employers at the fair. Express an interest in the company and relate your background to the company s needs. 5. The Career Center recommends that students consider professional dress standards(suit and tie for men; pant or skirt suit for women) or business casual (slacks with a shirt and tie for men; pants or skirt with a blouse for women) when meeting employers. Keep accessories to a minimum.

25 PREPARING FOR CAREER FAIRS Cont. During the Fair 1. Register and obtain a map with the location of the employer tables. Students are encouraged to speak with employer representatives and gather company literature during the fair. 2. Employers are eager to speak with you about their company and industry. Students are encouraged to ask questions and pick-up company literature of interest. Ask for a business card and follow the requests of the recruiter in leaving resumes. 3. If you are interested in a company after speaking with them, ask about the hiring process and any deadlines that may be approaching. After the Fair 1. Send a cover letter along with a copy of your resume to the representative of the companies that interest you. 2. Follow-up a week later with an or phone call regarding a specific position or other career opportunities within the company.

26 PREPARING FOR CAREER FAIRS Cont. Questions You Can Ask Employers at the Fair What types of career opportunities do you offer? Can you describe the qualifications and skills you look for in an applicant? What types of projects might I expect to work on in my first year with the company? What is a typical career path with your company? What is a typical day like? What makes someone successful with your company? What advice would you give someone seeking work with your company? What type of entry-level positions, internships or co-op positions exists within your company? 9. Are there opportunities for ongoing training in your company?

27 SALARY SURVEY & PLACEMENT REPORT The Career Center of Sacramento State is associated with the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE). This organization compiles salary and placement reports from 428 career planning and placement offices of colleges and universities across the nation. Confidentiality is maintained for the individual and the employer. These reports are used for career counseling, salary negotiation, and placement statistics for our division. Alumni are sometimes contacted after graduation to ask about current opportunities for upcoming graduates or about general information regarding their position. To report a placement simply log onto Career Connection, select the account tab, and then click the Placement tab. Next, click on the Add New button at the bottom and populate the fields. Click submit to complete the entry.
