RIT Job Zone Guide RIT Job Zone is the web-based system used by RIT s Office of Cooperative Education and Career Services and selected employers to post job opportunities for co-op, graduating students and alumni. This system allows you to: Search for all types of jobs, including full-time and co-op employment Apply for jobs online Track your job search, including job listings you have applied to Receive notification of new job openings that fit your job-search profile Sign up for interviews with employers on campus (And cancel on-campus interviews prior to the interview date) Store versions of your resume; versions of your cover letter; and other job-search documents such as writing samples, pictures/graphics, your portfolio; and a transcript document Print formatted copies of any of your job-search materials Use a calendar feature to see all upcoming events like career fairs and employer presentations, co-op orientations, walk in hours, workshops and other programming. Search through list of career fairs, participating employers and their job descriptions. How Do I Start To Use RIT Job Zone? As a student at RIT you automatically have access to RIT Job Zone. Go to the RIT Office of Cooperative Education and Career Services main student page Your login is your RIT computer account and password.) Alumni please contact us to get a password either through our alumni main page or by calling (585) or (585) (TTY) or wahoce@rit.edu. Updating your profile and storing a resume Before using RIT Job Zone you must complete your profile: Click on Profile link to get started. Go to personal information tab and complete and submit that form, then complete the academic information and privacy pages of your profile. Selections on the privacy portion of your profile include your ability to receive s, inclusion in resume books, and the user agreement. Once completed, you will have access to job listings and on-campus interview opportunities. We strongly recommend that you store your resume in the system: Go to the Documents section. Click Add New to upload a resume. In the Label field include your first name (or initial) and last name (For example, ClarkKentResume or C.KentResume). Select the appropriate radio button to indicate the type of document. Click Browse to select the appropriate document. Click Submit. Unless you have a resume in the system you cannot sign up for interviews or apply to jobs through the system. Also, by storing a resume in the system, employers with approval to use it can search resume books which will include your resume in their searches. USAJOBS: The official job site of the United States federal government. Tip: Best way to search for a co-op job for a particular quarter: Select Co-op Jobs, on Jobs tab, next to Show Me choose all jobs & interviews from the pull down / yes next to Include only selected major /next to Key Word type in quarter number (i.e. 084) in search field. View the schedule of employers presenting information about their company. These presentations also appear with on-campus interview opportunities. They are important to attend if you will be interviewing with them. CALENDAR Displays events and scheduled interviews. Transcripts and Job Zone You are not able to upload an official copy of your transcript, but you can provide a copy of your classes and grades. Start by logging into RIT Information Center at and 2
select SIS. After providing passwords, click on the Miscellaneous tab to get the academic advising grade list. Currently, this is the best way to capture your academic record for employers from SIS. Select the page, copy then paste into a Word document. You should delete the text at the very top, but keep the rest. Now you are ready to go to Job Zone Documents link, to upload your Word document into the system as an Unofficial Transcript. Search Agents Job search agents will alert you when there are new jobs posted to the system that meet specific criteria that you have set. You can have updates sent to you as often as every day, week, etc. Setting it up The first step in creating a search agent is to start with an Advanced Search. Click on Jobs on the navigation bar, then on Advanced Search tab. The top field is Search Agents, check mark next to Save as and give your agent a label. Select your search criteria and submit. Co-op Tip Best criteria for a co-op job: from the pull down next to Position Type select co-op, next to Key Word type in quarter you wish to start your co-op (i.e. 084) in search field, select your major from pull down. Full-time Tip Best criteria for a full-time job: from the pull down next to Position Type select full-time, your major from pull down and select a Job Function. Check mark next to Save As to start an agent Scheduling Agents Once you have created a search agent, it will now show up on the Search Agents page (Jobs/ Search Agents tab). You can use this as a saved search and also receive s if a job is added to the system matching your search criteria. To get s you need to enable it to run on a schedule by clicking on Search Agents tab in the Jobs section. Once you have set up an agent, click on your Search Agent Label, click Enabled Yes, and then set a Period and a Multiple to set up a scheduled search. The Period and Multiple determine how frequently a Search Agent runs. (Example: Period=month, Multiple=2, Agent will be run every 2 months.) A Search Agent runs a scheduled search automatically and then s the results of the query to you. 3
Search Agents page Using Agents as a Saved Search Search Agents are basically a saved Advanced Search that you can run at any time. So rather than waiting for an notification of a new job, or performing a search for jobs by selecting criteria each time just go to Jobs on the navigation bar and the Search Agent tab click on the name of the agent you have set up and on the right side hit the run button. You will get real-time results based on the agent s criteria. Maintaining Your Agents From the Search Agent page you not only set up how often it is run, but you can edit, delete each agent. It is recommended that you review and update your agents periodically because job options such Major Recruited, Geographic Region etc. may change from time to time. Note: They will stop working if you have not logged into the system within 90 days. On-campus Interviews If you apply to an interview, watch the Alerts section on the Job Zone homepage because you will get a link that will tell you to sign up for the interview. You will also get an notifying you. You can also go to Interviews and the Scheduled Requests tab. 4
Click on the job title which will take you to a page where you can select an interview time, hit submit. Career Fairs Once you login to RIT Job Zone you will have the ability to see what fairs are scheduled, access lists of participating employers and their company profiles, sort by major through job descriptions and see what programming is set up around a career fair. Upcoming Fairs Click on Events on the navigation bar, or its quick link, to see all upcoming events like career fairs and information sessions (employer presentations), workshops (mock interview program, co-op orientations, alumni speaker series and other programming): When you click on the name of the fair you are interested in, it will take you to a page with a list of companies participating in the fair. Select a company name and you will get a company overview, with available positions tab (job descriptions the company has submitted for the fair): Job Descriptions and Employer Profiles One of the most effective ways to search through career fair job descriptions is through the Jobs link on the toolbar. Once you are on the Jobs page, select Career Fair Postings from the Show Me drop-down menu, your major and position type. The results from this search will pull up all the career fair job postings with your major and position type. Click on the job title for a complete job description (with a link to the employer s profile). You will definitely have the edge of over your competition, and make the most of your time with a recruiter, if you are able to target employers who are seeking candidates with your qualifications! Helpful tip: many companies provide a link to their web site because they want candidates to submit a resume even before they speak with you at the fair. Career Fair Preparation Programming Our major career fairs often have programming scheduled just before the fair that will help you prepare for it. Employer information sessions give you the opportunity to learn about a company, what they are looking for in a candidate and meet representatives. Workshops are designed to get you ready for a career fair they often include panels of employers with advice, resume reviews, mock interviews and workshops developed to teach you how to make the most of a career fair. 5
Employer Information Sessions On the Events page, click on the Information Sessions tab to see all the presentations employers have set up for you: These sessions are open to everyone but especially important for students who plan to meet them at the fair. Click on the date link to see all the details of the session. You also have an RSVP option which reserves a space for you. Tip: type in the name of a company in the Employer field to find out if they have an information session scheduled. Workshops Click on the Workshops tab on the Events page to see what is scheduled, when and where. Select the name of a workshop for more details. You have an RSVP option which reserves a space for you. Frequently Asked Questions Q: I can't sign up for an interview. What do I do? A: The job may have gone offline, you may have missed the deadline to sign up or your qualifications do not match the requirements of the job. Q: How do I view the companies that I've sent my resume/cover letter to? A: Click on Profile. The 'Activity Summary' tab shows you the date and time of all important actions that have taken place such as resume submissions, scheduled interviews, and more. You can sort the list by action or by days back. User Tips Do NOT use the back button on your browser; instead use the back link on the web page. Use the Help icon available on each page for additional information. Tips for Using the Key Word Field Please note that keyword search matches whole words by default. To get partial matches, add an asterisk to your search term: manage* To exclude results which include certain words, prepend them with a minus: manage* -weather To search for specific phrases, use double quotes: store manager Search terms shorter than 3 characters and some common words are ignored, except in phrase searches, where some words may be shorter. Take advantage of all the RIT Job Zone features related to career fairs. If you have any questions, please contact your program coordinator in the Office of Cooperative Education and Career Services we are always happy to assist you!
