3 The innovative Concavia high bay luminaire family ensures choice and flexibility, offering three sizes including Small, Large and Extra Large, together with a wide range of lamp types and wattage combinations. The option of reflectors and decorative accessories allows the Concavia range to be adapted to create lighting solutions for a modern architectural appearance. A range of wire guards and covers improve safety and protection, while the option of a ring louvre provides essential glare control. Concavia has a robust construction and is manufactured using high quality materials. Suitable for high ambient temperatures. Option of IP23 or IP65 to guarantee functionality of the product in dusty or wet surroundings, whilst still maintaining safety and durability. A key element of the range is that Concavia offers tool-free installation and maintenance. For ease of installation the product is equipped with a mains entry cable, therefore no access is required into the main body of the fitting. This ensures that the IP65 rating is maintained, providing a high level of safety, and saving time and money. Concavia offers opportunities to create lighting solutions for a range of commercial and industrial applications such as retail, sports halls, factories and warehouses through to tough industrial environments. When creating a particular ambience in a showroom or a retail application, Concavia S and L offers a unique appearance without compromising quality, safety or reliability. There are several critical factors which need to be taken into account to ensure a smooth and continous operation within industrial applications. These include high quality materials, IP ratings, enhanced performance to limit maintenance requirements and suitability for environments with higher ambient temperatures. Concavia L and XL are an ideal choice for these types of application, they are easy to install, provide excellent LOR and offer IP23 or IP65 for tougher industrial surroundings. For most sporting applications functionality and product performance are essential. Glare control and IP ratings need to ensure optimal performance even at low temperatures, such as skating rinks. Concavia L or XL are well equipped to provide the perfect solution for these applications. Setting the 35 C The standard ambient temperature for testing luminaires according to EN is 25 C, and that is what most competitors products achieve. However, very often, especially in industrial applications, the ambient temperature where high bay fittings are installed is much higher. Thorn has set its own standard to suit more realistic conditions. All Concavia S and L versions with aluminium reflectors have been tested at an ambient temperature of 35 C. Naturally there are versions which can be used in even higher ambient temperatures but as long as the temperature does not exceed 35 C, users do not have to consider which is the correct luminaire to use. For those versions which can operate in higher ambient temperatures, these have been highlighted in the ordering guides. 5

15 Planning and lamp info Lighting Design Ready Reckoner The Ready Reckoner provides a very quick and simple guide to know approximately how many fittings will be required to achieve a certain lux level (with a certain lamp eg. 57W TC-TEL lux). To read these charts look along the horizontal axis showing the floor area m 2 until you reach the required floor space, then move to the curved line which refers to the lamp types and lux level. Now look horizontally following the line to the left, this will indicate the approximate number of luminaires required. For example: Concavia S Floor area m Lamp type and lux level - 57W TC-TEL lux Approximate number of luminaires - 28 (Please see Concavia S diagram) Concavia S with reflector RAL Mounting height = 4m Lamps and Operation The Concavia family offers a wide selection of different lamps. Concavia L and XL mainly focus on HID technology, which means metal halide, high pressure sodium and mercury lamps. To make the right choice in terms of light sources can be easy, when knowing some simple basics about the different lamps: HIE (metal halide) are very efficient, offer very high lumen packages and good colour rendering. The main applications, from Industry to Retail, are nearly unlimited. HSE (high pressure sodium) lamps offer a very long lifetime and excellent efficiency. However it does not offer the colour rendering level of a HIE lamp and are mainly used in Industry. HME (high pressure mercury) are mainly used for simple industrial applications. HID lamps always need gear sets, however HIE (metal halide) lamps show quite a special functionality they can be run on HIE or on HSE gear.
