2 Welcome Summer is winding down and it s time to welcome autumn, the time of year to enjoy cooling temperatures and make the most of shorter days. Stop in and visit the prairie garden to witness the abundance of fall flowers in bloom from yellow goldenrods to purple asters. Settle in on a bench for a spell to watch a bounty of birds feast on seeds as many prepare to fly south for the winter. Look for the first signs of autumn s changing hues as you stroll along our woodland trails. Be sure to stop by the Visitor Shelter to check out our autumn displays and take a moment to rest and warm yourself by the fire. Every Tuesday and Thursday and on the weekends, Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden Naturalists offer free programs. Learn about the latest blossoms and birds on these fabulous explorations of the Garden. Every Saturday morning a free birding program is offered for new and experienced bird watchers alike. It s a wonderful opportunity to spend time in the field with a seasoned group of birders. Themed tours on a variety of natural history topics are offered on Saturdays at 1pm and Sundays at 3pm. These programs will delve a little deeper into particular subjects like Minnesota native tree identification, birding skills, wildflower identification, and more. Enjoy the beauty and wonder of nature with each step during this wonderful time of year. -EBWG Staff Family Adventure Backpacks filled with activities your family can do together are available to use while visiting the Garden. Stop in to the Visitor Shelter to borrow a backpack during your next visit. Interested in learning more about the Wildflower Garden s many fascinating plant species? Be your own tour guide by following the station numbers in our Garden Guidebook available at the Visitor Shelter to borrow or to purchase for $5. The Garden parking lot is a pay lot with a Pay and Display parking system. If you have a Minneapolis Parks Parking Permit sticker, you may park in any parking space. Non-permit holders may park in any space and use the pay box to pay for your parking. Payment receipts must be displayed on your car s dashboard to be valid. 3 Naturalist Led HIKES & TOURS Autumn Wildflowers Tour Join us for an afternoon walk to find the flowering plants of autumn scattered throughout the 15 acres of prairie, woodland, and wetland that lie within the Garden gates. Birding Basics Beginning birders will learn a few techniques and tips for success using binoculars and field guides. Learn what to look for when identifying birds in the field. Bring binoculars or borrow ours. Early Autumn Wildflowers Tour Join a Garden naturalist to explore the fall blossoms in the woodland, wetland, and prairie. We will explore the Garden trails while learning about the natural histories of the plants during your visit. Early Birders Both new birders and those with a little more experience alike can join our naturalists each Saturday morning to practice identifying birds by sight, sound, and behavior. Bring binoculars and a field guide or borrow ours. Family Garden Ramble Autumn is here! Join a naturalist to explore the Garden with the whole family. Enjoy the late season blooms in the wetland and prairie and look for dragonflies, butterflies, and other insects. Magnificent Mushrooms Behind the scenes of the Wildflower Garden, hosts of mushroom species are hard at work recycling nutrients and helping plants grow. Learn the basic structure of mushrooms and how to identify some species. Nature Hike Learn about the current blooms, bird sightings, and animal antics in the Garden by hiking the trails with a Garden naturalist. Quaking Bog Tour Discover what makes a bog unique and what adaptations plants need to survive in this type of wetland. Learn what is being done to protect this special habitat. Meet at the Quaking Bog parking lot. Tremendous Tree Tour The Garden s diverse woodland habitat offers a great opportunity to delve into the fascinating world of tremendous trees. You ll learn what to look for when identifying trees, hear some tree lore, and discover where the Garden heritage trees are located. Wildflowers of the Wetland and Prairie Walk the Garden trails with a naturalist while learning about and looking for wildflowers of the wetland and prairie including Turtle Heads, Gentian, New England Asters and more. Wildflower Walk Join a naturalist on a short wildflower focused tour of the Garden. You will have the chance to walk the Garden trails while learning about and looking for autumn wildflowers. 3

The Friends of the Eloise Butler Wild Flower Garden Invasive Plant Action Group buckthorn removal events: Saturday October 1, 10am-12:30pm Sunday October 9, 2-4:30pm Saturday October 16, 2-4:30pm No Experience necessary. Autumn Equinox Walk at Minnehaha Park Thursday, September 22, 5-6:30pm Autumn begins today and we ll be there to learn about the change of seasons and how this natural process impacts all who live here. Walk through the woods and to the river to explore Minnehaha Park on this first day of autumn. Meet at the Minnehaha Falls Picnic Pavilion in front of Sea Salt Eatery. Fall Migration Bird Watching Minnehaha Creek and Lynnhurst Park Sunday, October 9, 5:45-6:45pm Walk along Minnehaha Creek with a naturalist and look for the many birds that are migrating through our area and the ones that stay all year long. Meet outside the Lynnhurst Park Recreation Center at 1345 West Minnehaha Parkway. Bassett Creek Natural History Tour Tuesday, October 18, 5-6:30pm Bassett Creek, which connects Medicine Lake in Plymouth to the Mississippi, has a rich natural history. Join park naturalists for an informative walk along part of this special tributary of the Mississippi, beginning at Wirth Lake. Park and meet at the Wirth Beach parking lot on Glenwood Ave just east of Wirth Parkway.
