3 Workshop Descriptions JOURNEY WORKSHOPS Daisies Three Cheers for Animals Based on this leadership Journey, Daisies learn how best to take care of pets and steward wildlife. They ll investigate how animals communicate, how birds make nests, and make their own All About Me nests out of natural materials. After going on a mini zoo tour and meeting an animal up-close, they ll leave with their own ideas to educate others about animal care and wildlife conservation. Daisies Between Earth and Sky In this Journey workshop, Daisies will hike to the beautifully restored Arroyo Viejo Creek to gain a hands-on connection with nature. They ll do fun sensory activities and nature-based crafts as they explore native plants, wildlife, and the wonders of soil science. They ll meet an animal up-close and leave with their own seed balls to launch mini native gardens in their neighborhoods. Brownies Wonders of Water Based on this leadership Journey, Brownies will dive into learning about their part in the water cycle. They ll go on an aquatic scavenger hunt in the Children s Zoo, explore watersheds and wildlife at the Arroyo Viejo Creek, and meet an animal close-up. They ll leave with a drought-tolerant native plant and a water drop promise to bring the water conservation message back to their own watersheds. Please bring an empty plastic, disposable water bottle (around 16oz) for each scout. Juniors Get Moving In this leadership Journey, Juniors get wild about energy as they explore the ecological energy cycle. They ll learn how to do an energy audit, explore animal migration on a Zoo tour, meet an animal closeup, and make conservation promise beads. They ll leave with a seeded pollinator plant and a plan to sow conservation practices in their community. Please bring an empty plastic, disposable water bottle (around 16oz) for each scout. 4 Workshop Descriptions BADGE WORKSHOPS Brownies Bugs Come down to the Oakland Zoo to learn a bit about bugs! You will never want to tell a bug to buzz off again after you spend a few hours at the Zoo. Come down and learn exactly what makes a bug a bug by illustrating some of their common body parts. You will also have the chance to meet some of our resident Zoo bugs by visiting them in their own home here at the Zoo. Don t forget about our native bugs for which you will make a take-home habitat. Please bring an empty, clean glass or plastic jar and lid for each scout. Juniors Animal Habitats Come find out how important it is to preserve an animal s habitat. You will investigate many different animals here at the Zoo and learn about each one s unique habitat. You also will learn a bit about what makes each one of these animals an expert at living in their habitat. After, you will have a chance to design your own habitat for an animal. Before you go, you will also have the opportunity to help keep the wild habitat around the Zoo clean and healthy for all the animals that live there. Cadettes Trees The Oakland Zoo is known for its animals, but did you know we have an excellent selection of native and exotic trees? Come learn about tree anatomy gain identification skills for some common local species. We ll learn how native animals make use of the trees in our area and investigate how the animals in the zoo are benefitting from trees as well. Increase your appreciation of trees by drawing inspiration from them for an art project, and at the end of the workshop you can use your new tree knowledge to get involved with tree action in your community!
