Welcome to Mrs. Hill PE Class! Mrs. Georgina Hill Gymnasium 9 th -12 th PE 1 hillgk@pps.k12.mi.us School Phone: (517) (best time to call is daily between 1:00-1:40) Please leave a message and I will contact you as soon as possible. Depending on when the message is delivered to me, it may take 24 hours for me to get back to you. Physical Educations Goals: The main goal of physical education class is to teach a wide array of activities that students may participate in to live a healthy and active lifestyle. Students may not enjoy every activity they participate in which is why they will experience and learn about numerous sports and fitness activities. Materials: In order for students to be active participants they need to be able to run, jump and move in comfortable clothing. This clothing needs to be different from what they wore to school, and appropriate. All shirts worn in PE class must have sleeves; tank tops will NOT be allowed. Students should have long shorts, & NO spandex allowed. Students should have tennis shoes that stay on their feet. Shoes should be laced up and tight. Flip flops are not appropriate attire for PE class because of safety issues. Students will be expected to get a pair of tennis shoes out of the lost & found box in the locker room if they are not prepared. A prepared student should have at least the following items in their gym locker. Example Locker: Shorts (long enough to hold hands at side and fingertips don t touch skin) *See school dress code for more explanation. T-shirt with sleeves (NOTE: this is different than the school rule of 2 ) Sweats & sweatshirt if chilly outside Inside & outside tennis shoes (No black sole tennis shoes in the gym) Soap & Towel (PE classes are earlier in the day). Be considerate of others. Deodorant/antiperspirant Extra pair of socks ****The PE department has t-shirts and shorts for sale if families would like to purchase. $18 per set. These PE uniforms are not required, but highly recommended. I need students to wear PE clothes that fit. See Mrs. Hill if interested.

PE Rules: 1. Safety First! (Think Before You Act) 2. Keep your Hands, Feet, and Objects to Yourself! 3. No Swearing or Bullying! 4. Listen to Instruction the First Time! 5. Positive Attitudes Only! (No whining) 6. Wash Hands After Every PE Class with Soap and Water Lockers and Locks: Students will have the opportunity to be assigned a combination lock and locker. You can purchase your own combination lock. However, NO key locks allowed for the simple fact that some students misplace items. If a store lock is purchased, please give Mrs. Hill the combination. In years past, some things have been stolen and/or damaged out of student s lockers. This happens because students forget to lock their lockers or put items away. Students should not bring valuables into the locker room. Use hall locker for items like purses, money, cell phones, MP3/Ipods, etc. Students who lose a school issued lock will have to pay $7 to replace it. Boys Locker room: There is a high level of responsibility that is expected from the boys while they are changing before and after class. I, being a female, am the only PE teacher available during 1 st /6 th hrs. I have NO desire going into the boy s locker room to supervise their behavior. However, if necessary, for safety reasons, I may have to enter. It is critical that students and parents are advised of this before hand. I need ALL boys to understand that they MUST be on there best behavior and fighting and bullying WILL NOT be tolerated! Course Grading: The 9-week grade is calculated by adding the total number of points earned on daily participation, tests, quizzes, journals, and sportsmanship divided by the total number of points possible. Each exercise day is worth 5 pts. The semester grade will be determined according to this scale: The 1 st and 2 nd marking periods will each be worth 40% of the semester grade (for a total of 80%). The final exam will be weighted as 20% the semester grade (for a total of 100%). Grading Scale Example Grade Calculation: A % A % 356 points earned divided by B % 480 points possible =.74(x100) =74% B 83-86% B % By looking at the grading scale to the left, C % one s grade can be calculated as a C. (74%=C) C 73-76% C % D % D % D %

E: 59% and below Absenteeism: Physical education class is the same as any other class with regards to make-up work. When a student misses a class they are required to make up the exercise they missed. This can be done when students are healthy enough to participate. Students must pick-up one make-up sheet (ie. one is attached), from the hanging file cabinet in the gym, for every day they have missed. This make-up sheet will give different exercise options that students can do in order to gain the participation points they missed out on. Parent or guardian will sign for witnessing and the sheet will be returned to the appropriate file folder. Students are responsible for their own make-up sheets! Unexcused absences will be counted as a zero. Participation: Students are expected to participate each day in PE. Be the best you can be each day and you ll earn your pts. If an injury or recovery from an illness keeps the student from being ale to participate, please provide a doctor s note. Parent notes are highly discouraged.. We as a PE department promote life-long physical activity. We just want the students to try and do their best every day. Tests & Quizzes: Since students are receiving high school credit for PE, test/quizzes will be given whenever necessary. Often, there will be a test at the end of each unit. Tests will be reviewed before hand and could be written or skill demonstration. Yes, there will be a final exam at the end of each semester. Classroom Expectations: Come to class with appropriate materials, and be prepared to participate. Respect yourself and all others in the classroom! When I am talking, you should be listening. When someone else is speaking, you should be listening. Offensive language and actions WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. (see student handbook) Respect the PE equipment. Students who purposely break or lose equipment will be charged for replacement. Pick up after yourself in the locker rooms. Remember that all school policies apply in this gymnasium or when we are outside on fields. PE Procedures: Entering the gym: Walk around the basketball court and go directly into locker room. Clothing: Put on tennis shoes and clothes in the locker room. Daily Agenda Plans: Read the white board in the gym for the daily activities. Exiting the Locker room: After exiting the locker room there is no re-entry without permission. Warm-ups: Begin warm-ups as soon as you enter the gym from the locker room.

Restroom: Use the restroom before class or in the locker room before entering the gym to participate. Water: Make sure you get a drink of water before entering class. If you need a drink during class, ask Mrs. Hill first. If you leave class without permission, you ll be marked absent. Tardy: Each student gets 4 min s after the 2 nd bell to change and start warming up. Any student entering the gym after 4 min s will be marked tardy. Leaving Class: Ask Mrs. Hill if you have to leave gym for any reason. Whistle: When you hear 1 whistle, STOP, LOOK & LISTEN, when you hear 2 whistles, SIT DOWN & BE QUIET. Absence: When absent, pick up a make-up sheet in the file folders by the white board. This is the student s responsibility to retrieve and return to gain participation credit for the day they have missed. Please make sure the date absent is written on the form. Paperwork: When turning in progress reports, homework, absent sheets, etc. put in the appropriate grade level box in the file folder by the white board. Taking care of equipment: Equipment is to be placed on the floor or in the appropriate containers outside of the equipment room after use. Hallway: When in the hallway for any reason walk and use quite voices. When entering the weight-room wait patiently along the wall for the door to become unlocked. Outside fields: Students are to jog to their assigned fields. Mrs. Hill should be the last one to the fields. Exiting the Locker-room end of day: Make sure all belongings are put away and locker is locked. Walk around the B-ball court and sit on bleachers/floor and wait until class time is over to leave. NO LINING UP AT THE DOOR. If you choose not to meet the classroom expectations, there will be consequences. The following is how disruptive actions will be handled in my classroom: The student will be given a warning (silent or verbal) The student will be given a more direct warning The student will be removed from the situation and spoken with when I have time to do so. (most likely within 5 min.) The students parents will be notified of his/her behavior by a phone call or . A meeting will be set up between principal, parents, teacher and student. Possible Units: Soccer, Airforce Football, Lacrosse, Rag/Softball, Track & Field, Ultimate/Frisbee golf, Archery, Floor Hockey, Basketball, Dodge Ball, Volleyball, Badminton, Speedball, Weight room, & Cardiovascular activities.

Please keep this syllabus as a reference to questions regarding PE and for contacting the PE department in the future. Detach this sheet and return.
