4 Campus FIRE SCIENCE AND LAW ENFORCEMENT The building was completed 15 years ago. It has 4 classrooms, 2 storage rooms, a forensics lab, a fire arms training simulator, truck bay housing 2 fire engines, a training auditorium, a 4 story tower, high ropes challenge course and restrooms with showers and lockers.

5 Fire Science Program 45,000 square foot Training Ground. We have 2 fire engines, ladders, hose, nozzles, and hand tools. We have a training house that has pivoting walls, so we can change the floor plan each time students enter it. It also has a Confined Space Prop built into it. We have live burn props: a car prop, and a propane tank prop. We have our own hydrant for our water supply. We have a standpipe and sprinkler system on the tower.

6 Student Physicals ALL students are required to obtain a physical prior to the start of Class in August Forms are available from Instructors or the Counseling Office. The type of Physical is similar to a Sports Physical, and if the student has had a Sports Physical it can be copied and used for our Program also.

7 Student Participation It is EXPECTED that student will participate daily. Each student should have a change of clothes, towel and toiletries available. Approximately $1, worth of Fire Gear will be issued to each student. Students are responsible for that equipment financially if lost or stolen.

8 Student Participation Program Costs: $91.50 for 1 st year juniors Returning students to second year $ New students to the 2 nd year class $ This covers: 4 Tee-Shirts, Nomex Hood, Skills USA Dues, EVIT Student Activity Fund. There is a Live Fire training fee for seniors in the 2 nd year program Students will provide a calculator, paper, pens and pencils, a 2 to 3 notebook, and highlighter

9 College Credit MCC Registration (15 College Credits) This year the cost will be $81 a credit hour, plus a $15 registration fee. These credits are accepted throughout the Maricopa Community Colleges We will also offer an additional 6 credits off campus, for Haz Mat, and Wildland S130/S190/ L180 These credits are transferable to most Community Colleges in other areas This is all but EMT, CPAT and the FF I & II Academy towards the core of the Fire Science Degree

10 Curriculum The Fire Science Certificate Requires: 15 Elective credits (Offered in the classroom) Hazardous Materials (Offered off campus to EVIT students) CPR / EMT CPAT (Candidate Physical Aptitude Test) Fire I and II Academy / FF Fitness & Conditioning Add your general studies to that to get your AAS Degree in Fire Science

11 Student Participation in VSO s Skills USA Student run non-profit organization Skills USA is a format that allows students to become classroom, Regional State, and National Officers

12 Student Participation in VSO s Conducts and / or Competes in Regional, State and National competitions In the past 17 years, EVIT Fire Science has won: 69 out of a possible 81 Regional Medals, 63 of 71 possible State Medals (16 Gold Medals), 2 of 14 possible National Medals (6 others placing in the top 10) We are sending our Gold Medal winner to Nationals in Kansas City at the end of June

13 Student Participation Students are expected to perform in a variety of Public Speaking opportunities. This will take place in front of Tours, Ambassador programs at other schools, Public Education with young kids, on TV, and in teaching in front of their peers.

14 Student Participation TESTS We give an average of 2 to 4 tests a week, Students are required to take and turn in lecture notes for credit, plus internet homework assignments, written homework and reading assignments.

15 Student Participation Grades: They are based upon homework assignments, written tests, attendance, hands on tests and the physical participation in the content area. They come out every 9 weeks. Progress reports will go out on the 4th or 5 th week in-between. Additional reports will go out to individuals who are having academic or discipline problems. They require a parent signature.

16 Grading Scale: % A % A 80-89% B 75-79% B- Below 75% is FAILING Student Participation Student must complete 80% of the competencies taught to become a course or program completor. Awards and Scholarships are available

17 Failing Grades If a student is failing they will make contact with the Teacher and Administration. If still failing in the following weeks, we call in the parent, to meet with the student, Teacher, and Administrator. If still failing after the 4th week, we will all meet again to look at alternatives or other programs for proper placement.

18 Failing Grades After all, would you want someone who failed CPR performing it on your loved one? Or, who received a C on Fire Suppression, attempting to put out your house if it was on fire?

19 Discipline First / Second offense: 75 Pushups / Parent contact Pushups go up by 25 every 4th and 9th week Third offense: Go to Administrative Office If outside, pushups, then Administrative Office Electronic Devices will be taken for PARENT pickup At anytime this order can be advanced, based upon the offense, or student history.

20 Student Participation Students will be assigned a Minimal amount of work each grading period to achieve competency attainment. Student who are absent, need to have each absence excused. If an absence is not excused, they are not eligible to make up the work missed, and will receive a ZERO for that assignment, test, etc. After 9 absences within a semester, will result in a failing grade, an audit and a loss of high school credit.

21 Student Participation After 5 absences an intervention team will contact the student to see if they need assistance in the matter. After 7 absences the student will be placed on an attendance contract. If your student is absent, you will receive an automated phone call, additional calls from the instructor if the school has not been notified by a PARENT, or in the case of excessive absences.

22 Insurance All students must have evidence of medical insurance, in case of injury. Fire Science is a hazardous profession, and We Practice Like We Play. Student Insurance is available for between $20-$50, through the paperwork your student will receive. Students need to have a physical and deliver results to the instructor within the first two weeks of school.

23 Classroom Rules Students will not be disruptive in class. Electronic devices will not be used in class without permission. Students will not be allowed to make or receive calls during class, EVEN TO AND FROM PARENTS. Hats will not be worn in the buildings. Class uniform shirts, pants, black belt and shoes are to be worn every day. 1 st year students will wear red shirts, 2 nd year blue shirts. Only closed toe shoes are allowed. NO UNDERGARMENTS MAY BE VISIBLE!

24 Field Trips To participate in Field trios students must have less than 5 absences during the semester. Skills USA Regional and State competition in April A water rescue practical at a local pool Live fire training at one or more of the local Fire Department Training Facilities. We are currently partnered with Mesa and Chandler Fire Departments. We have also partnered with Boeing FD to get our students Nationally certified in Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF).

25 Explorers EVIT Explorers are students enrolled at EVIT and have paid the $12.00 Registration Fee. There is an additional $30.00 annual fee. Explorers are based through the Boy Scouts of America / Learning for Life, they are not considered EVIT students while participating in Explorer activities.

26 Explorers The Fire Science Explorer Post 2611 will have a variety of field trips throughout the year. These trips will include: 110 to 180 foot Rappel / Technical Rescue Caving / Confined Space Rock Climbing at a local Rock Gym One half day (3 miles roundtrip (Easy)) One full day hike (8 miles roundtrip (Strenuous)) Parents are welcome and can participate with proper paperwork at no cost
