1 PHYSICAL EDUCATION GRADE 10 #903 Instruction is directed toward refinement of skills and techniques previously learned in various activities coupled with an introduction of advanced skills and techniques. The curriculum also offers new team activities as well as a unique course which focuses on awareness and development of an individual fitness plan. Activities offered in 10th grade include the following: flag football or field hockey, team handball, soccer and personal wellness. 10th Grade Physical Education One Semester 1 MARKING PERIOD (1st or 4th Quarter) Field Hockey or Flag Football Team Handball Soccer 1 MARKING PERIOD (2nd or 3rd Quarter) Personal Wellness Introduction to wellness Cardiovascular fitness Muscular strength and endurance Flexibility Body composition and weight management Skill-related fitness components Activities to develop the various components 9 weeks WARREN HILLS REGIONAL HIGH SCHOOL Grading system for boys and girls in physical education Credits: 2 1/2 3 Days Per Cycle Each student starts out each new marking period with 100 points. Area I - Proper Attire - Participation - Attendance 70 points Marking Periods 1 & 4 Each marking period, a student may earn a maximum of 70 points toward his/her physical education grade by, daily, wearing the proper gym attire, actively participating in all activities, and being in attendance. 2 points off - First (1st) unprepared: Failure to wear entire prescribed gym uniform. A student will be considered "unprepared" and WILL NOT be permitted to participate in physical education class if he/she is (a) without sneakers, or (b) wearing inappropriate trunks or shirt, or (c) is wearing jewelry. Sneakers must be securely fastened with all laces visible on the outside. Hiking boots are not allowed. 4 points off - Second (2nd) unprepared and subsequent unprepareds 1 point off - Missing athletic socks 1, 2, or 3 points off - Unsatisfactory participation 2 or 4 points off - "cutting" class will be considered as being unprepared for class and the appropriate amount of points (1st, 2nd, or 3rd unprepared) will be deducted -

2 in addition, appropriate disciplinary action will be taken by the school administration. Area II - Skill ability - Knowledge of Activity - Effort, Improvement and Cooperation Marking Periods 1 & 4: A student may earn a maximum of 30 points toward his/her physical education grade as indicated in the following areas. 1. Skill Tests 20 points 2. Effort, Improvement and Cooperation 10 points SPECIFIC TO PERSONAL WELLNESS ONLY Marking Periods 2 & 3: The personal wellness marking period Area I is the same as all other physical education classes. However, for Area II the 30 points are divided as follows: 1. Laboratory Sessions - students assess their components of fitness through a variety of laboratory experiences 20 points 2. Effort - Improvement - Cooperation 10 points Final exam grade equals 1/9 of the final course average. MAKE - UP PROCEDURES FOR PHYSICAL EDUCATION GRADES Physical education instructors will be available during the time of 2:20-2:45 to provide instruction to students who desire extra help in physical education and to administer written and skill tests to students who need to make them up. 2. It is the responsibility of the student to contact the instructor and arrange for a time to make-up any assignments missed. A student who misses a written or skill test, due to an excused/non-cumulative absence, will be allowed two weeks from the date he/she returns to school to make up the test(s) missed. 3. Failure to make-up a written or skill test will result in a zero (0) being awarded for that particular test. 4. A medical excuse is defined as an illness/injury that is verified by a note from a doctor or the school nurse. Students should refer to the separate Make-up Policy for Medical Excuses to determine how such classes can be made up. 5. Cumulative absences which exceed 6 for the semester will result in a loss of credits for physical education. 6. Any unique situation which is not covered in the above guidelines will be resolved by the department supervisor/principal, with each situation being evaluated on its own merits.

4 Physical Education Make-Up Policy for Medical Excuses Short Term Medical Excuses (4 or less consecutive days) A request written by a parent for a student to be excused from physical education class must be presented to the nurse prior to the class on the day for which the request is made. Students with parent notes or who are excused by the nurse will be exempt from doing the article assignments for a maximum of three days per semester. Students with a parental note, nurse s excuse or a short term doctor s excuse for four or less consecutive days will report to their gym classes and not participate. The school nurse has the discretion to assign a student elsewhere. Students with short term medical excuses that do not have a doctor s note may only be excused for one physical education class per semester. Days missed in excess of this one day will count as unexcused absences which could result in a student losing credit for the course. Long Term Medical Excuses (5 or more consecutive days) It is important that students with long term medical excuses who miss physical education classes be given an opportunity to complete an alternative assignment so as not to suffer a grade reduction or the loss of academic credit. To accomplish this task, students are afforded the opportunity to complete academic work in lieu of the physical education class(es) missed. The long term medical make-up policy work follows: 1. For each day that a student misses physical education due to a long term medical excuse of 5 or more consecutive days, verified by a written doctor s note, the student shall read one article on Sports, Fitness, Health or Wellness, and answer the appropriate 10 questions. 2. Students with a written doctor s excuse for five or more consecutive school days will be assigned to a study hall everyday for the duration of their excuse. Students will be accountable to obtain their health articles and answer sheets for one full cycle from the library during their lunch period. It will be each student s responsibility to return the completed answer sheet(s) to his/her physical education teacher within one week of its being assigned to receive credit. Students with more than one physical education course a semester will be assigned reports by their teachers in addition to reading the articles. Completed answer sheets for articles assigned during the last week must be turned in by the last day of the marking period in order to receive credit. Students with special circumstances and advance permission who do not have sufficient time to complete all answer sheets within this framework will be given an incomplete for the marking period. 3. In keeping with the physical education marking system, the ten item answer sheet will be graded as follows: 9-10 correct answers 0 points deducted 6-8 correct answers 1 point deducted 3-5 correct answers 2 points deducted 0-2 correct answers 3 points deducted Failure to submit an article within the one week period personally to his/her gym teacher will result in loss of three points per article. This policy allows students to receive credit for physical education each marking period even if several classes are missed for medical reasons during said marking period.

5 4. Physical education excuses that state until further notice are good for only three weeks unless the doctor states the next appointment date. Failure to update an until further notice excuse within two weeks of the three week expiration date will result in the student receiving unexcused absences for the days in excess of three weeks which could result in the student losing credit for the course. The student without clearance to return to gym class or without an extended excuse from a doctor should still complete the daily articles in the event a valid doctor s note is obtained within the two week extension period. 5. Students who know that they will miss more than six weeks of a marking period due to medical reasons must meet with their guidance counselor within one week of the beginning of their medical excuse to discuss and then implement one of the following options: Option A. The student may complete a series of written assignments, as detailed above, and receive full academic credit for the marking period. Option B. After said consultation with his/her guidance counselor, the student, with written parental permission, may request to be assigned to a study hall for the marking period. Under this option, no academic credit for physical education is earned for this marking period. Students and parents need to weigh this option carefully, for the total number of credits required for graduation will not be reduced, nor will the number of credits needed for athletic eligibility. In addition, any credit for physical education will be determined by averaging the grades of marking period where the student participated in physical education or completed the alternate written assignments. In either case, a signed parental release must be returned within one week of the student s consultation with the guidance counselor to confirm parental understanding of, and agreement with the option chosen. Finally, students who know ahead of time that they will miss a semester and/or the entire year of physical education for medical reasons are urged to take an additional semester or year course if possible, as again, the number of credits required for graduation is not reduced when students miss physical education for medical reasons.
