1 Fairview Eagles Physical Education Outline Philosophy and Structure of Program Fairview Physical Education fosters independence, responsibility and personalized learning through physical activity. The Physical Education program is designed to encourage active living, increase knowledge of games, develop skills in a variety of sports, and promote sportsmanship. There will be an emphasis on quality programing, goal setting and fun! Grade 5 and 6 Students will be taught by one or two Physical Education teachers for the school year. The program will provide alternating days of Physical Education (specific skills) and Active Living (personal fitness and a variety of games). Grade 7 Students will receive instruction from one of three P.E. teachers in each term during the school year. Students will be exposed to a wide variety of activities & sports as well as a fitness component each day, followed up by Fitness Fridays. Students will set personal fitness goals and attend to them during our daily P.E. classes to increase their overall strength and flexibility throughout the year. Grade 8 and 9 Students will receive instruction from one of three P.E. teachers in each module of choice. Students are afforded the opportunity to choose one of three activities/sports in each module based on personal skill and interest. Module duration varies according to the activity and may last anywhere between 8 and 10 classes. Choice allows students to increase their knowledge and skill in a favorite activity or explore new areas of interest. Grade 8 & 9 students will also have the opportunity to set and achieve personal fitness goals through daily warm ups /exercises as well as through Fitness Friday s. Health and Life Skills in Physical Education Grade 5-9 Students will be taught a unit of study from the Life Skills curriculum specific to their grade level. This unit of study takes place sometime in January, February or March. The necessary forms will be sent home prior to the commencement of these units.

2 - Students are expected to: Expectations for Fairview Physical Education Students Arrive to class on time. Each grade level will be given the appropriate amount of time to change into their gym strip prior to attendance. Come to class prepared, wearing proper Fairview gym strip and footwear. Extra clothing may be required for outside activities. Look after your personal belongings in the change room, lockers and gym bags. Respect Self, Others, and Equipment. Respect the locker rooms and personal space. Attend class with a positive attitude, ready to have fun, and attempt to do your best in all activities. Take the opportunity to demonstrate leadership and teamwork. Demonstrate sportsmanship and engage in positive interactions Avoid Gum and Jewelry. Both are safety hazards! (Lock up your valuable jewelry in your lockers or store in a zip lock bag in your gym bag.) Make safe decisions in class. If you get injured in class please inform the teacher. We need to provide you with the proper first aid! Remain in lower hallway at the end of class, away from stairs and doorways until the bell rings or until you are dismissed by the teacher. The use of cell phones or other electronics is not allowed in the change room under any circumstances.

3 Fairview Gym Strip All students will be expected to wear Fairview gym strip. Students can purchase a new gym strip for a cost of $ If a student cannot afford to purchase gym strip, a parent/guardian will be required to send a note to school and we will assist the student. We also sell breathable gym bags for $10 as an option for the grade 5/6 students. If grade 5 & 6 students choose to bring their own gym bag, it must be cotton or a breathable fabric. Grade 5/6 students will have the opportunity to visit their hallway lockers before and after P.E. class to exchange their books for their P.E. gym bag. All students require proper running shoes for footwear. Please purchase shoes that will provide ample support and shoes that securely tie up. Proper footwear will be discussed at great length with the students in P.E. class. Loaners If a student has misplaced or forgotten their gym strip they will borrow a set of our PE clothes, which the staff members refer to as loaners. After 3 days of wearing loaners, students will be asked to replace their missing gym strip (and in this event teachers will communicate with parents through the agenda and possibly followed up by a telephone call). Students who borrow loaners are required to follow this protocol: 1. Ask your PE teacher for a set of loaners (shirt and/or shorts and/or shoes) 2. After a conversation with a teacher, obtain loaners from the bins in the lower gym and/or shoe shelves in the lower gym. 3. At the end of the class return the loaners back into the loaner return bins located outside of each change room. 4. It is your responsibility to inform your P.E. teacher when you return the loaners to the bin outside of the change rooms Lost And Found Found PE clothing will be placed in the lost and found bins in the lower gym at the bottom of the staircase on the left. These bins are labeled lost and found. It is the student s responsibility to find their lost gear and may need to wear loaners until they find their own belongings. Outdoor Activity Students will be informed well ahead of time when they are scheduled to outside for PE. It would demonstrate responsibility and preparedness by bringing a sweatshirt and sweatpants to wear over gym strip when required. For hygienic reasons, students can not wear a sweater for PE activity that they are wearing for the school day. It is a great idea to store these extra clothes in your gym bag or PE locker. It is always an expectation that you are prepared for PE class. The only exception to this rule would be if a winter jacket is required, at which time a teacher will direct the student to stop at their hall locker.

4 Locks/Locker Room Every student in grade 7-9 will be assigned a lock and a tote box. While these lockers are the property of Fairview, they are the responsibility of the respective student. Lockers and lock combinations will not be shared between students. There is one exception as some of the grade 9 students may be sharing a large locker. If you do not lock up your belongings they may be taken or vandalized. You will be responsible to replace it at your own cost. Please don t share your locker combinations with other students. If a student has something of great value, it should not be stored in the locker rooms. Inexpensive jewelry or small items should be stored in a ziplock back in their tote boxes. At the end of the school year, all students shall return the lock they were assigned. If a student loses a lock, they will need to replace it with a school lock through the P.E. department at a cost of $6. We the PE staff must reiterate the importance of locking up their personal items. Belongings in the locker room are only secure if the students are diligent about locking up their tote boxes. The school is not responsible for replacing lost or stolen items. - Students will enter the change rooms after attendance or with direction from your respective teacher in period 1 - Students will enter the change room after the music begins at the end of nutrition break and lunch hour respectively. - Students will not be in the locker room during nutrition break or the lunch hour. -Students will RESPECT the locker room. Do not damage the lockers, plug the toilet, leave it messy, etc. NO food or drink is allowed in the locker room EVER!! - The shower area in the boys locker room is off limits to all students. - Students will leave books on the benches in the locker room. Lock up agendas, pencil case, and any other valuables in the locker - Grade 5 and 6 students will not be assigned a locker but instead will keep their clothes in a breathable gym bag in their hall lockers and will be allowed to get their bags before class and return them after P.E. class. Gym bags will be taken with the student to the area of activity and not stored in the change room.

5 Excused Participation If a student is well enough to attend school, they are also expected to participate in P.E. to the best of their ability. P.E. is a mandatory subject and it is a regular part of the school day. - In the rare case where a student is unable to participate due to an injury, they will be required to bring a note from a parent/guardian to excusing them from P.E. -If a student is unable to participate for 5 days or more, a note will be required from a Physician or other medical professional. Please have the doctor indicate what activities your child is able and/or unable to participate in. Our hope is to maintain active students active in PE. If an injury allows a student to participate in an activity that won t further aggravate their symptoms or injury, the teacher will contact the parent to discuss potential solutions. Assessment The student is expected to track individual progress and advocate for himself/herself in PE. Students should regularly check d2l and ask the teacher to provide feedback if the student requires clarification. Grade 5 & 6 students will be graded on a 1 to 5 scale; 5 being the highest level of achievement. A rubric is attached to outline assessment and specific expectations for the PE student. Every 4-6 weeks a PE progress report will be posted on d2l for grade 5 & 6 students to review. Grade 7,8 & 9 students will earn a percentage grade for each module of activity, based on 3 categories of assessment in PE. 1. Skills and Knowledge (30% of total grade) 2. Effort and Participation (40% of total grade) 3. Attitude and Sportsmanship (30% of total grade) A progress report will be posted on d2l within 5 days of completion for each module of activity.
