1 JANUARY NEWSLETTER 2017 George Fitton School Ski Trip Grades 4 8 This year we will be going to Minnedosa Ski Valley on: February 10, 14, and 23. $40 includes transportation by school bus to and from the ski hill, lessons, lift tickets, and rental equipment. Students must pay by January 30 th, then classes of students will be grouped together to ski on one of the ski days. 2 Parent Council News Parent Council would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who supported the Winter Wonderland Family Dance. We had a great turnout and everyone had a fun time. We would like to wish everyone the happiest of holidays and all the best in the New Year! See you in 2017! Campbell s Soup Labels for Education The Campbell s Soup Labels for Education program is coming to an end. Thank you for your support in sending labels to our school in the past years. We will no longer be accepting the labels at the school as the program ended December Volunteer Opportunity! We are looking for volunteers to help out in our George Fitton Library. If you have an hour or so to spare once per week to help with book reshelving, tidying or book repair, please contact the office, or talk to our librarian, Mrs. Cuggy. If your child is not able to attend school, please call our attendance line to report the absence. Mrs. Krieser Home School Liaison Please remember bundle up for the weather. Students remain indoors at recess breaks when the temperature falls below -27. At this temperature the Walking School Bus and School Patrols will also be cancelled.

3 Grades 4-8 Slumber Party Thank you for supporting the lunch hour clubs by participating in our slumber party. There will be more fun activities planned as the year continues. Watch for details. Proceeds from these fun activities help fund our lunch hour clubs such as Gamers Unite and Card Club. Popcorn Sale Wednesday, January 18 th Kindergarten to Grade 3/4 Thursday, January 19 th Grade 4/5 - Grade 7/8 Pre-orders are due Tuesday, January 17 th Message from Ms. Greig A big George Fitton thank you to all of the Card Club members for helping to make over Christmas tags for the Christmas store! It was an excellent addition to this event and I hope it becomes an annual tradition. Thank you for sharing! Starting January 10 th, Lunch Hour Clubs return to kick off 2017! There will be new Gamers Unite groupings so make sure you check the lists in your classroom to find your groups. If you have any questions, just ask! Also, thank you for continuing to support our Lunch Hour Club fundraisers. The money we are able to raise purchases supplies for Card Club and updates the technology we use in Gamers Unite. For example, one of the things the students asked for was mouses for the laptops during coding. We have also been able to purchase a Lego kit to invent and add our Littlebits to. Check future newsletters for pictures and updates!

4 Roots of Empathy During the theme of Caring and Planning for Baby, our Roots of Empathy grade 1/2 classrooms focused on teething and around the time our babies may be getting their first teeth. This can be a traumatic time for babies and we discussed with our mom how they handle this with their babies. The students drew pictures showing how they felt about losing their baby teeth. This was made into a book for the classroom. In the Kindergarten classroom we learned what items were important to carry in a diaper bag! Our next theme of Emotions is critical to the Roots of Empathy program. We will work at recognizing, understanding, and sharing one s feelings, and being aware of the feelings of others. Mrs. McCannell Building Student Success with Aboriginal Students BSSAP Our Monday evening group will resume on January 16, 2017 at 6:00pm. If you would like to join the group, please call the school and let Mrs. Gregory know to expect you. For more information about the BSSAP Program contact Mrs. Gregory, our BSSAP Coordinator at George Fitton School Taco in a Bag Friday, January 27 th Orders Due Wednesday, January 25 th Order forms will go home the second week of January Girls Space Our grade 5/6 Girl Space group is working on a Kindness Project. Part of their project was to create messages of encouragement that were shared on bathroom mirrors in the school. Stay tuned for more exciting parts of the Kindness Project! On December 7 th & 14 th, our police studies mentors and participating students helped out at the Westman Christmas Cheer Board.

5 Youth Revolution News Every year the Y-R students help decorate the Helping Hands soup kitchen for Christmas. Last year it was noticed that their decorations were getting pretty old and worn. So during the week of Nov a Christmas Decoration Drive was conducted at school. This was a great success. A large quality of new and gently used decorations were collected. Several classrooms made decorations. On the morning of Dec. 1, Y-R members went to the kitchen and decorated for the Holidays. Helping Hand patrons and workers were thrilled with the help. Thank you to the GF community for your generous giving!

6 George Fitton s 5 th Annual Christmas Store was held on Wednesday, December 7 th. It was nice to see so many students attend with their families, and take home gifts for each other. Did you know? Fun Facts! Hot chocolate was served to the parents who waited patiently while their children shopped in the parent free shopping zone. We appreciate all students, staff, parents and community members that helped make this event a great success. If a student misses 2 days of school per month they will miss one month of school in the year.
