3 Looking back on grey times In the 1950s and 60s, almost every residential property had its own heating furnace Coal was the most common fuel When oil replaced coal flue gas purification was non existent Lake Mälaren (third largest lake in Sweden) was extensively contaminated, resulting in: Public swimming being forbidden Water and fish being dangerous for consumption Rubbish lining the shores of the lake INTRODUCTION THE GREEN AND BLUE CITY THE CLEAN CITY THE CONNECTED CITY THE CLIMATE SMART CITY THE FUTURE

5 Stockholm Planning History Stockholm has a long history of city planning with a holistic view The first Urban design guidelines was introduced in 1725 The General plan för Stockholm 1952 determined the growth for decades to come Stockholm got the first National City Park in 1995 The coprehensive city plan, adopted by the city council in 1999, launched the policy of building the city inwards INTRODUCTION THE GREEN AND BLUE CITY THE CLEAN CITY THE CONNECTED CITY THE CLIMATE SMART CITY THE FUTURE

6 A long history of smart environmental measures: Stockholm s first water purification plant from 1904 District heating was established already in the 1950s Congestion charges have been introduced 2006 Stockholm has reduced CO 2 emissions by 25% per resident within the last 15 years INTRODUCTION THE GREEN AND BLUE CITY THE CLEAN CITY THE CONNECTED CITY THE CLIMATE SMART CITY THE FUTURE

9 Hammarby Sjöstad A unique project initiated in 1990 to develop sustainable city district within a centrally located industrial area World s largest sustainable city area with fully integrated infrastructure The city area has its own purification plant where the latest technology is appraised Electricity through biogas furnaces, solar cells, solar panels and fuel cells INTRODUCTION THE GREEN AND BLUE CITY THE CLEAN CITY THE CONNECTED CITY THE CLIMATE SMART CITY THE FUTURE

10 Hammarby Sjöstad has a unique vacuum system for waste handling that actually transports garbage under ground All burnable waste is converted into district heating Water conserving flushing toilets and air filters in mixer taps will cut water consumption by half Hammarby Sjöstad opens its doors to over 10, 000 international visitors every year INTRODUCTION THE GREEN AND BLUE CITY THE CLEAN CITY THE CONNECTED CITY THE CLIMATE SMART CITY THE FUTURE

11 The city that enables cleantech companies to grow There are highly innovative and specialized technology companies in all urban sectors The cleantech industry consists of nearly 3,000 companies and 25,000 employees within the region s cleantech sector These environmental companies reflect strong turnover and financial results Investment and business development within the environmental sector is predominantly within: renewable energy water purification energy efficiency (in buildings) alternative fuels systems for environmental-friendly infrastructures INTRODUCTION THE GREEN AND BLUE CITY THE CLEAN CITY THE CONNECTED CITY THE CLIMATE SMART CITY THE FUTURE

13 Stockholm city chooses eco cars Out of all municipal vehicles bought during the first half of 2009, 97% were clean vehicles. 82% of all the municipal vehicles and all inner city buses run on ethanol or gas. A project is underway to ease the transition to electric cars and plug-in hybrids for companies and administrations. 14 Henriksdals Water Purification Plant One of the worlds largest subterranean water purification plants: m 2, 18 km tunnels. Most of the plant is hidden inside a mountain. Purifies waste water from people. Originally built in 1941 continously expanded and improved. Played a major part in cleaning up lake Mälaren. 17 Stockholm Royal Seaport The vision is to be a world-class city area Phase one began in 2010 An obvious environmental profile where experience gathered from Hammarby Sjöstad will be intelligently applied STADSLEDNINGSKONTORET SIDAN 17

18 The upliftment of the Järvafältet area Improvements to city areas in northern Stockholm. Approx. 25,000 apartments will be renovated to heighten energy efficiency as well as reduce energy consumption by 50% INTRODUCTION THE GREEN AND BLUE CITY THE CLEAN CITY THE CONNECTED CITY THE CLIMATE SMART CITY THE FUTURE
