1 Environmental initiatives in Stockholm s Million Programme towards a world-class Stockholm
2 By 2013 energy consumption will be reduced by 30 percent. Together we are carrying out environmental improvements within the Million Programme! One fourth of Sweden s population lives within the so-called Million Programme, a building project carried out during several intensive years back in the 1960s and 70s. Million Programme areas are characterized by open courtyards, family-oriented city planning and park areas. The quality of the Million Programme remains high but over the years the buildings have become worn and in need of renovation. In many European cities, buildings like the ones built during the Million Programme are being demolished. In Stockholm, we are doing the opposite beginning one of the largest renovation projects ever seen in the city s outer regions. When we finish in 2020, areas such as Kista, Rinkeby, Spånga, Tensta, Farsta and Skärholmen will serve as good examples for others to follow. They will be safer, more pleasant, and above all, greener, with greater energy savings and more environmentally sustainable. In order to reduce water usage, we are installing new nozzles on taps and showers. To reduce the amount of landfill waste, we are making it easier for our tenants to separate their waste for recycling. We are also installing food waste disposers that convert waste into biogas in several of our buildings. 99 percent of all waste is to be recycled! Above all, we are taking energy conservation measures. For example, we are installing climate-smart geothermal and pellet heating solutions. We are also installing additional insulation, waste water heat exchangers and recovery ventilation systems. Such measures will reduce energy consumption for heating and hot water by over 30 percent by 2013, compared to the kwh usage in The energy conservation measures will result in an increased demand for electricity, but this increase will be met by electricity from renewable energy sources such as hydroelectric power, wind power, bio fuel and solar energy. In addition, five percent of heat consumption in the renovated areas will be self-generated. In several of these areas, for example Rinkeby, Kista and Akalla, we are installing solar collectors and solar panels, converting the sun s rays into heat and electricity. In this way, we are renovating the Million Programme for the future, and fulfilling our responsibility in creating a more sustainable Stockholm and helping to make it a world-class city.
3 Action areas! Akalla Husby Kista Tensta Rinkeby Spånga Measures will be carried out in Kista, Rinkeby, Bredäng, Husby, Akalla, Spånga, Tensta, Södermalm, Skärholmen and Farsta. The initiative will affect 12,400 flats in total, 6,000 of which will have been completed by 2013, the rest by year 2020 at the latest. Out of the 12,400 flats, 4,100 belongs to Familjebostäder and close to 1,400 to Stockholmshem. The remaining 6,800 flats are owned by Svenska Bostäder. Södermalm Bredäng Skärholmen Farsta
4 What we are doing Through the environmental initiatives being taken within Stockholm s Million Programme, Familjebostäder, Stockholmshem and Svenska Bostäder are working together to shape the future of Stockholm. All measures are to be carried out with the specific intention of reducing the impact that the city s buildings have on the environment and to contribute towards a perceived improvement in quality of life among tenants. Waste Despite a 20 percent increase in household waste over the past ten years, the amount of disposed waste has decreased by over 90 percent since The reason for this is that waste recycling and incineration has increased significantly over a long period. We will contribute to this positive development in part by installing food waste disposers in several of our buildings, converting food waste to biogas and by making it easier for our tenants to separate waste at source. Metal, electrical, batteries, plastic, paper, glass and bulky waste should all be separated. Alternative energy solutions Sweden has approximately hours of annual sunlight. This means that every square meter, from Gävle to Ystad, is bombarded with solar energy amounting to an equivalent of kwh every year. We will make use of that. We are therefore installing solar cells in several buildings which convert sunlight into electricity, or solar collectors which convert sunlight into heating energy. A solar panel of 8 m² produces approximately 850 kwh annually. A solar collector produces between 300 and 775 kwh annually, depending on type. Heating The average heat consumption in a Million Programme building is an annual 155 kwh per m², which is approximately 50 kwh per m² more than in a new property. This is something we intend to change. By replacing windows, adding insulation, installing recovery ventilation systems and waste water heat exchangers, we plan to reduce energy consumption by at least 30 percent in the areas concerned.
