2 Via Francigena or Frankish Route (road coming from France) was the major christian pilgrimage route to Rome from the north of Europe. The Via Francigena was not a simple road but a series of paths through which European people have circulated for hundreds of years.

3 The Via Francigena is not only a line in the landscape, but it is also a section from north to south of european landscape. To regenerate what remains of the Via Francigena means to take care of its different paths, still evident at present as trails, minor roads or sometimes major roads, but also of its surrounding landscapes. In Lazio region the Via Francigena mainly coincides with the ancient roman Via Cassia.

4 According to these remarkable credentials the Via Francigena has been declared Cultural Route in 1994 and Major Cultural Route in 2004 by the Council of Europe, together with the Camino di Santiago.

5 The Italian itinerary has been made official by the MiBAC (Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali) with the support of the AEVF (European Association of Via Francigena ways). The Italian route is subdivided in 44 stops, from the the Great St. Bernard to Rome, for around 900 km.

6 As part of the inter-regional project on Via Francigena (L. 135/01, art. 5, paragraph 5), of which Regione Toscana is the leader, in 2009 was carried out the study "Via Francigena. A new Italian tourism (the "Manual"). This manual sets out the specific actions that the operators must follow to prepare the tourism product "Via Francigena". The manual provides guidelines for signage in order to equip the four types of itineraries: cycling, walking (hiking) and horse riding.

7 In 2006 Lazio Region approved a law forwarding cultural, tourist and environmental enhancement of the Via Francigena (L.R n. 19/2006). Regeneration and marketing of historical - religious routes (including Via Francigena) were approved by Lazio Region as priority policies for the management of european funds (P.O.R ).

8 Lazio Region has identified the Via Norme Francigena e programmazione paths in implementation della Regione of the Lazio DGR 820/2007 and 544/2008: northern Lazio (Sigeric s way from Proceno to Rome) southern Lazio (along the ancient Via Appia and Via Prenestina - Latina) eastern Lazio (St. Francis way from Rieti to Rome) On most routes efforts were made to bring physical enhancement and to install signposting.

9 In autumn 2008 Sviluppo Lazio Company delivered to local municipalities a document commissioned by the Culture Department of Regione Lazio. The document called REGOLE QUADRO contains guidelines for the activities aiming at making safe and enhancing the route and recommendations leading actions in charge of the municipalities. The municipalities crossed by the via Francigena have implemented works on the route in years Regione Lazio funds were major financial sources.

In 2009 the Areas of Integrated Planning (L.r. 40/1999) have prepared the executive plans, which include: interventions for the safety of pedestrians; signposting; restoration of monuments; promotion of cultural events; studies, research and information and communication activities production of documentary, photographic and multimedia material

23 2013 Public notice promotional projects aimed at creating a national and international network; publishing projects (guides, maps, etc. ) aimed at the dissemination of knowledge and better use of the routes; initiatives animating the territory (with particular reference to walking, hiking, sightseeing) that engage and familiarize local communities.

34 A first result these activities has been the approval of a framework agreement for a technical committee for the governance of the routes that involves all local municipalities.

35 INTERREG IVc CERTESS: European Cultural Routes Transferring Experiences, Sharing Solutions ROUTE IMPLEMENTATION PLAN (RIP) The RIP of Lazio Region focuses on the integrated sustainable development of 3 cultural itineraries: the Lazio stretch of the Via Francigena, along its entire route from Canterbury to Rome, joins Acquapendente town to Rome; the Lazio stretch of the Via Benedicti leads from Subiaco to Monte Cassino and follows the journey of St. Benedict through 9 stops, each one hosting a monastery of high religious and artistic interest; the Via Amerina, the ancient connection between Umbria region and Rome, in Lazio leads from Orte to Calcata towns.

38 Strategies and Actions: Create and develop a network of the routes, sharing good practices and exploiting economies of scale; Enhance and increase collaboration between public and private sectors; Ensure sustainability for maintenance; Identify governance and monitoring instruments and develop communication and dissemination tools. 39 Lazio Region has published in August 2014 a Notice for enhancement initiatives of the Via Francigena (L.r. n. 19/ year 2014/15): routine maintenance of the paths and signposting; reception services and logistics for the pilgrim (transfer people and luggage, bike rental, etc.); publishing projects and multimedia. The Notice was addressed to groups of municipalities along Via Francigena only in collaboration with other actors, as: "Provinces, educational institutes, universities, public institutions, ecclesiastical bodies and privates in the Lazio region territory.
