Introduction Rice is a staple food and above all a strategic commodity for Africa: Only 54%, of African rice demand, is produced locally Rice imports in Africa in 2009 approach 10 million tons Impact of drought (erratic rainfall and poor water control) in rainfed lowland ecosystems: 80% of the total rice area of Mali, 67% in Burkina Faso and 48% in Nigeria.

Introduction: Rice Challenge Initiative Objectives: to develop drought-tolerant cultivars with high yield potential in normal years and good yield under drought and other major stresses for each target environment Sponsor: Generation Challenge Programme (GCP) Target countries: Burkina, Nigeria and Mali Target environment: rainfed lowland ecosystem Duration: 4 years Partners: CIRAD, IRD, IRRI, INERA, IER, NCRI, CIAT and AfricaRice

What is done WP5: Project and information management The IRIS-RiceCI database was set-up and managed in Cotonou and the following issues were dealt with: Establishing nomenclature and standards for germplasm, Entering the germplasm lists including parental lines in the Database, Establishing nomenclature and standards for traits, Entering the traits list in the Database The list F1, F2 and F3 nurseries were also entered

What is done WP5: Project and information management The IRIS-RiceCI database was set-up and managed in Cotonou and the following issues were dealt with: Total of 1882 lines for the four crosses (ARC1, ARC2, ARC3 and ARC4 for each cross combination) Workbooks were created and transmitted to partners for data recording Data were received from partners on Excel Spreadsheets

16 3.2 handheld device The feasibility of using an HP ipaq 211 Enterprise Handheld for data collection was carried out Training an AfricaRice staff to use the ipaq and transfer data to workbook The Biometrician also intended a training course on plant breeding data management and data analysis in Spain

17 3.2 Handheld device: Outline of the training 1. Create the fieldlog files from the ICIS fieldlog application 2. Transfer the fieldlog file to handheld 3. Collect data with handheld 4. Transfer the collected back to workbook
