1. Introduction Rice is a staple food and above all a strategic commodity for Africa: Only 54%, of African rice demand, is produced locally Rice imports in Africa in 2009 approach 10 million tons Impact of drought (erratic rainfall and poor water control) in rainfed lowland ecosystems: 80% of the total rice area of Mali, 67% in Burkina Faso and 48% in Nigeria.
1. Introduction Ecosystem Burkina Faso Mali Nigeria Africa Irrigated 46% 22% 17% 20% Rainfed lowland 50% 13% 47% 34 % Deep water 0% 64% 6% 8% Rainfed upland 4% 1% 30% 38 % Total (M ha) Production (Mt ) Yield (t/ha) FAO (2005)
1. Introduction: Rice Challenge Initiative Objectives: to develop drought-tolerant cultivars with high yield potential in normal years and good yield under drought and other major stresses for each target environment Sponsor: Generation Challenge Programme (GCP) Target countries: Burkina, Nigeria and Mali Target environment: rainfed lowland ecosystem Duration: 4 years Partners: CIRAD, IRD, IRRI, INERA, IER, NCRI, CIAT and AfricaRice
1. Introduction: Rice CI Project Organization WP1- Consolidating knowledge Characterization of lowland environment Establishing drought evaluation sites and Designing ideotype for TPE WP2- Phenotyping For drought tolerance the GCP phase 1 genetic materials, MARS populations, and promising lines For yield & other traits under various levels of environment control WP3- Breeding Developing breeding populations Genotyping MARS populations QTL analysis Combining favourable alleles at target QTLs WP4- Capacity and Community Building Putting in place the rice drought molecular biology and breeding community of practice for West Africa Capacity building (PhD student and short training on specific topics) WP5- Project and information management For drought tolerance For yield & other traits under various levels l of environment control
2. MARS procedure scheme Elite donor 1 x Elite donor 2 F1. SSD For drought tolerance controlled drought (rainout shelter) F3. F3:5 Phenotyping 400 lines Bulk For yield potential natural hydrologic contrasts (toposequence) Drought Control - Soil water status - Traits for direct selection for DT - Weather & soil water status - Traits for indirect selection for DT - Yield and yield components - Morphogenetic responses (EcoMeristem) - Other traits of interest - Canopy transpiration (IR thermography) - Plant architecture & phenology - WUE (C13 isotope index) - Leaf rolling and senescence - Physiological i l stress (leaf fluorescence) - Diseases, grain quality,

3. What is done WP5: Project and information management The IRIS-RiceCI database was set-up and managed in Cotonou and the following issues were dealt with: Establishing nomenclature and standards for germplasm, Entering the germplasm lists including parental lines in the Database, Establishing nomenclature and standards for traits, Entering the traits list in the Database The list F1, F2 and F3 nurseries were also entered
3. What is done WP5: Project and information management The IRIS-RiceCI database was set-up and managed in Cotonou and the following issues were dealt with: Total of 1882 lines for the four crosses (ARC1, ARC2, ARC3 and ARC4 for each cross combination) Workbooks were created and transmitted to partners for data recording Data were received from partners on Excel Spreadsheets
