1 Overview International course Plant Breeding
2 The course and modules The international course Plant Breeding consists of 6 modules of 1 week in the period October 2016 until March In between these modules, participants are expected to perform self-study and work on specific assignments. After completing the course, participants will receive a certificate. In this course the following topics will be covered per module. Module 1 Plant breeding and selection: basic principles and simple traits Module leader: Dr RE (Rients) Niks Dates: October 24 28, 2016 (5 days) - Introduction to the course. - Breeding objectives. - Genetic diversity and domestication. - Applied genetics. - Breeding of autogamous and allogamous crops. - Breeding of asexually propagated crops. - Breeding of hybrid cultivars. - Various selection methods (including recurrent selection). Module 2 Molecular markers, linkage analysis, QTL analysis and markerassisted breeding Module leaders: Dr AW (Sjaak) van Heusden & Dr CA (Chris) Maliepaard Dates: January 23 27, 2017 (5 days) - Molecular markers (also high throughput detection and use). - Linkage analysis. - Construction of linkage maps. - Quantitative inheritance. - QTL analysis. - Mapping in polyploid crops - Marker-assisted breeding. - Association mapping. - Genomic selection. Special case: Mapping and QTL analysis, tutorials using mapping software. 2
3 Module 3 Quantitative aspects of plant breeding Module leader: Dr CA (Chris) Maliepaard Dates: March 20 24, 2017 (5 days) - Statistics. - Design and analysis of plant breeding trials. - Multi-environment trials and Genotype x Environment Interactions. - Bioinformatics: Database use and bioinformatics tools for plant breeding. - Bioinformatics: DNA sequence analysis. - Omics technologies in plant breeding. Special case: Data analysis using Module 4 Breeding for Resistance and Quality Module leader: Dr LM (Luisa) Trindade Data: September 25 29, 2017 (5 days) - Resistance to diseases and pests: o Qualitative and quantitative aspects of resistance. o Mechanisms of resistance. o The way towards resistant cultivars. - Resistance to abiotic stress factors: o Plant abiotic stress response. o Traits for abiotic stress breeding. o Biotech and genomics tools for abiotic stress breeding. - Breeding for quality aspects: o Impact of breeding in the quality of food-crops. o Metabolic engineering and breeding in ornamentals. o Targeted breeding of biobased crops. Special case: Group study on interactions between biotic and abiotic stress resistance and quality traits. Module 5 Biotechnology, including seed technology and GMOs Module leader: Dr CWB (Christian) Bachem Data: January 22-26, 2018 (5 days) - Genetic modification. - Novel breeding technologies. - Intellectual property rights (Patents, PBR and EDV). - Maintenance, propagation and seed production. - Seed technology. - Societal context of Plant Breeding. Special case: Intellectual property rights incl. variety protection and breeders rights. 3
4 Module 6 Integrating all knowledge to design a breeding programme Module leader: Dr AB (Guusje) Bonnema Data: March 19 23, 2018 (5 days) - Design and management of a breeding programme. - Group assignment with case studies in different crops. - Presentations and panel of experts. - Certificate ceremony Course leader The plant breeding course is led by Prof. Richard Visser. He is leading instructor in plant breeding at Wageningen University and head of Wageningen UR Plant Breeding. Important criteria to participate - You have basic knowledge in and understanding of genetics, plant physiology, plant diseases and statistics at BSc level. - You are capable of understanding and participating in English lectures on plant breeding topics. Sending in a Curriculum Vitae (CV) and motivation letter is part of the admission procedure. Exams and additional master programme Modules 2 6 will start with a written exam of the prior module. Successful completion of the course makes exemptions possible for the master programme MSc Plant Sciences, specialisation Plant Breeding and Genetic Resources and for the online specialisation MSc Plant Breeding. Exemptions can be granted on an individual bases and depend on the results of the exam for each module. Doing exam is strongly advised but not an obligation to participate in the plant breeding course. 4
