4 Content 1. INTRODUCTION The Smart City phenomenon is rapidly expanding. A growing number of studies have been carried out which look at several cities in various countries that can be described as "Smart" and estimated the market value that will be generated by the Smart City in the coming years. The expression Smart City encompasses a conception of urban reality that goes beyond the technological boundaries. In a wider view it includes issues such as mobility, energy efficiency, egovernment and the active participation of citizens. Its objective is to raise sustainability standards, quality of life and economic dynamism of future cities. The Smart City theme is more relevant than ever and brings a set of challenges for Italy. There are numerous studies that show that the urban population is destined to grow in coming years. The numbers of "city users" who find themselves living the city not as citizens but residents in under various circumstances, including as tourists or workers will increase. Globally, at end of 2014 more than 3.9 billion people were living in urban areas (54 per cent of the world population) and it is expected to reach 6.3 billion in 2015 (66 per cent). In Italy these values are more significant as more than 42 million people live in urban areas at the end of 2014 (69 per cent of the population). Cities are responsible worldwide for more than 75 per cent of waste, 80 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions and 75 per cent of energy consumption. This emphasises the importance of increasing the sustainability, attractiveness, quality of life and economic dynamism of cities by making them "Smart". Beyond the precise value of these estimates, which often conflict with each other, because the boundaries are not always welldefined by Smart City, an element on which they all agree is that the Smart City will be a major theme. It will effectively improve land management and quality of life, and boost many economic activities. There is not a full overlap between the concept of Smart City and the Internet of Things (IoT), which is taking the role of the technology enabler of a Smart City. It has many uses to optimise the resources and strengthen the services offered in urban areas. The uses of the IoT solutions within urban areas are diverse. They include road management, public transport, waste collection, safety, environmental monitoring, and area monitoring, infotainment and tourism services. 4

5 1. INTRODUCTION During the search, 161 cities (76 in Italy, 85 abroad) were analysed looking at 217 Smart City projects enabled by the IoT technology, which were used for more than 400 applications. Besides identifying the more interesting application and city areas which have initiated projects, this analysis collected data on business models, to see useful points for decision makers. 5
