Overview The Internet of Things (IoT) is one of the most important technological trends of recent years. It is the network of billions of intelligent objects and scenarios derived from it in terms of services provided to the citizens, increase in business enterprises, and benefits for the whole community. Estimates of the number of IoT connections made by different analysts are very heterogeneous, but all of them agree in predicting an impressive growth in the near future. From a purely technological point of view, it concerns automating the collection of data from disparate sources and distributed on the territory, to transport and integrate data collection, develop analytical models that make it possible to extract useful information to make better strategic decisions. It is essential to provide the highest level of security for each level of the process, especially when you operate in critical contexts, such as health, industrial production, and transportations. To measure up to the value expressed by the IoT, public administration and companies must make changes within their organizations in order to develop a joint sensitivity and create a unified view between the different bodies involved. To ensure an end-to-end vision of the IoT solutions, thus enabling a full perception of the relationship between costs and benefits, Italtel puts itself in the role of representative System Integrator for all the involved technologies, defining - in that case - the necessary relationships with partners who are part of the value chain. 2
Benefits The IoT solutions can support a virtuous cycle of progressive computerization of expensive manual processes, enabling important benefits for citizens and businesses. Improving the quality of life of citizens is achieved by increasing the security of infrastructure and territory, and a more effective management of the services that are used (quality of health care). Increased productivity and safety at work can be achieved through the tracking and localization of objects and people. The spread of tele-monitoring and tele-management systems enables a reduction in operating costs, in terms of optimization of energy expenses, achieved with real-time analysis of environmental data and consumption. The processing of information gathered by machines and sensors is critical to the definition of a timely preventive maintenance strategy, which will enable both to maximize the 3
operating time of equipment and systems, and to systematically reduce operating costs associated with the maintenance itself. The analysis of the information coming from the field can offer support to business systems to optimize processes involving different actors at an inter-company level, allowing you to virtually unify Supply Chain fragmented on a global level. In this way, all players in the value chain can align themselves in real time to fluctuations in demand, maximizing customer satisfaction and reducing inefficiency and waste. 4
Technical Description In general, the architectural principles of an IoT solution can be summarized in one exemplary schema that includes three levels: sensors that generate data, transport network, platform that enables the storage and processing of data. In Italtel s vision the paradigm of Cloud Computing fits well with the IoT functional needs; with this in mind, Italtel has developed an IoT platform dedicated to the collection and processing of data for energy, infrastructural and environmental monitoring. This platform is used to provide Cloud services supporting the operational efficiency of the companies and for public safety purposes. In the case of data management and companies internal processes, it s useful to refer to Private Cloud models, for which are required the highest levels of security and privacy. The experience gained over the years by Italtel about its main partner s technology, Cisco Systems, world leader on IP networks, is brought to the value to build network infrastructures that can safely integrate all the information coming from the field. Typical application areas are: Smart Grid, Manufacturing, Transportation. The Italtel proposal is made complete by additional partnerships that can offer technologies for specific areas: industrial automation and control, business process analysis, management and integration of specialized systems for vertical markets, lowpower network operators, that enable you to connect, at limited cost, objects with low energy consumption that are installed even in the most inaccessible places. 5
About Italtel Working where Telecommunications meet Information Technology, Italtel addresses some of the main technological challenges the world of communications is facing nowadays. IP Networking, Cloud, Network Function Virtualization, SDN, WebRTC, IoT, are just some of the areas where the company is present with end-to-end solutions. Italtel offer includes proprietary products, engineering and network consultancy services, managed services and solutions. Italtel counts more than 40 customers worldwide, and among them there are several major Service Providers and multinational Enterprises. In addition to having a leading position in the Italian market, Italtel has focused its foreign operations on EMEA markets and Latin America. Italtel S.p.A.
