1 Elementary Spanish Curriculum: In addition to hearing the spoken language, and becoming comfortable responding in Spanish, these lessons are presented to lower elementary and upper elementary students. The level of instruction and type of follow-up will vary in complexity within the cycles. Accommodations are made for students who are native speakers to engage in more advanced reading and conversation related to the Spanish language. Concepts/lessons taught: Greetings, response to commands, role-playing Goals and outcomes of lesson: For all children to introduce themselves and have basic introductory conversation in Spanish Vocabulary: Hello, goodbye, How are you? My name is? (and typical responses).necessary verbs for sentence construction Lesson: Instructor demonstrates a greeting and response with students individually and then in a group and finally with partners Permanent Material to be on the Shelf: Conversation flow chart with dry erase marker Listening center C.D. with song and conversation Beginners: practice with instructor and peers with and without flow chart. Intermediate advanced: conversation worksheet, create your own conversation in Spanish and write it symbolize with grammar symbols, write their own skit for greeting/conversation Nouns and pronouns Goals and outcomes of the lesson: For children to understand gender and voice in basic Spanish sentences (verbal and written for older students) Vocabulary: I, you, he, she, it, we, they, us, ours, yours, all of us (verbs for sentence construction) Lesson: Verbal review in a circle of pronouns
2 Permanent Materal: pronoun game (bingo) Beginners: Pronoun follow-up book and song Intermediate Advanced: bingo game and sentence building with Montessori Spanish sentence building materials Family and Food Goals and outcomes of the lesson: For the children to identify family names (proper nouns) in Spanish food associated with meals Vocabulary: Food group names, Father, mother, etc. (verbs for use in sentence construction) Lesson: Instructor reads story (provided by Rachael) of a family at dinner; discussion and reading comprehension Permanent Material: Family magnets and magnet board/ copy of the story/vocabulary cards and family tree chart Beginners: comprehension questions; worksheet Intermediate advanced: Montessori Spanish sentence cards with use of proper family names and pronouns and names of food groups and specific foods within the groups; sentence construction with Montessori, Spanish, sentence material Cooking and Dia De Los Muertos Goals and outcomes of the lesson: Basic understanding of cooking vocabulary in Spanish; understand the holiday and compare and contrast with Halloween Vocabulary: Kitchen utensils, and appliances; Day of the Dead language Lesson: Verbal first; tour of kitchen and story of Dia De Los Muertos Permanent Material: Labels, fill in the blank recipe and resources (book, etc.) of Dia De Los Muertos Follow Up Lesson: Beginning: put labels on appliances; and calavera coloring Intermediate Advanced: fill in the blank recipe and compare and contrast worksheet for Dia De Los Muertos Gustar and Estar (like and to be) Goals and Outcome of Lessons: Describe feelings and to create sentences verbally or written about people and foods they like/dislike Vocabulary: To be and to like in present tense with previously learned pronouns Lesson: Present feelings chart (pictures) and cards with Spanish words to describe feelings Present and act out/pantomime likes and dislikes and different feelings Permanent Material on the Shelf: Feelings chart and feelings wheel in Spanish Activities for Follow Up: Beginning: color face and label feeling/matching
3 Intermediate advanced: how are you worksheet and a feelings journal (per week); Montessori Spanish sentence work Directions and items in the classroom Goals and Outcomes of the Lessons: expressing classroom items and placement with prepositions and prepositional phrases Vocabulary: left, right, and all prepositions Lesson: Movement and music demonstration of the prepositions and directionality Permanent Material: Laminated chart of the classroom Beginners: Blank chart for completion Intermediate advanced: Preposition worksheet Montessori Preposition boxes translated in Spanish and symbolized. Winter celebrations in Spanish Speaking Countries Goal or outcomes of the Lesson: Learn, understand and develop understanding of different winter celebrations in Spanish speaking countries. Lesson: Share celebrations with the children with books and photo cards Vocabulary: names of Spanish speaking countries, holidays and items associated with the various holidays. Lesson: With a world map, in color, identify which countries speak Spanish. Use the photo cards (big pictures of each country), Read books about different celebrations Permanent Materials: Map in color and the photo cards and flags of the Spanish speaking countries and large photo cards with report outline Activity/follow up: All levels: Cooking, maps, charts with reports and pictures; art craft Seasons and the calendar Goals and Outcome: Children will be able to name the seasons, the months and the days of the week in Spanish Lesson: Present season vocabulary cards Vocabulary: months of the year, seasons and the days of the week Permanent material: Calendar, season vocabulary cards Activity/Follow up: All Levels Each child makes a calendar (older children add holidays of Spanish speaking countries) Weather Goals and outcomes: Be able to accurately describe weather conditions using Spanish Vocabulary
4 Lesson: Discussion of weather, present vocabulary/picture cards and introduce the song: Quetiempohace Vocabulary: snow, ice, rain, sleet, sunny, hot, cold, windy, cloudy Permanent Material: Weather chart Activity/Follow up: Beginning: Picture matching sheet: words with picture of weather Intermediate- advanced: keeping a two week weather diary, complete with pictures Parts of the body and movement Goals of this week: identify movement commands and parts of the body Vocabulary: Basic parts of the body and verbs describing movement Lesson: Introduce commands, play a movement game Permanent Material: Chart of the body and movement command cards Follow Up Activities: All levels Command games Simon says Draw body and label Game with nouns as indicated on instruction sheet that will be provided by Rachael Regions of the earth Goal and outcomes: to identify the different regions, as well as some of the flora and fauna of the regions Vocabulary: rain forest, dessert, tundra, tropical, various plants and animals of each Lesson: Present to the children Book on regions (in Spanish), use the Montessori sentence work for animal identification and the plant cards that Rachael prepared. Picture cards on regions Permanent Materials: picture cards, Montessori, Spanish sentence cards, maps and globes Follow up activities Beginning: matching of plants and animals (with pictures and cards) Intermediate/advanced: Regional research and map completion Building a Story Goals and outcomes: Children write and/or orally create a simple story in Spanish Vocabulary: Fantasy characters and action oriented verbs Lesson: Children are read a familiar fairy tale in Spanish, and are asked to indentify the main characters and what happened in the story. Children are then introduced to the vocabulary of fantastical creatures in Spanish thorough vocabulary cards. Then children break up into smaller groups to create a few sentences (using Montessori Spanish Cards) to begin building a story. Permanent Material: noun (fantasy creatures) and verb cards Follow-Up Activities:
5 Beginning: A story starter (a few simple sentences that are related), beginning students should be able to work with Montessori Spanish sentence cards at this point. If they still have difficulty reading an adult will help them put their ideas to use with the materials. Intermediate/Advanced: A fleshed out simple story with a beginning ending and an end all written in present tense. Children will have the option of creating a skit or play. Sports Goals for this week: For the children to gain understanding of Sports vocabulary in Spanish and communicate what sports they like to play and how they play them using verbs. Vocabulary: Sport names, equipment names, review of movement verbs, gustar, and days of the week. Lesson: Children read a book about Sports in Spanish, then are introduced to Sports vocabulary, then they play a round of Sports vocabulary bingo. Children go outside and act out the new Sports movement vocabulary and are led in a discussion of their favorite sports that they participate in or want to participate in. Permanent Material: Sports vocabulary bingo, sports vocabulary poster and language cards Follow-Up Activities Beginning: Children write a simple report (drawing pictures included) about their favorite sport to play. Add sports activities to their Spanish calendar created in weeks 15 & 16 Intermediate/Advanced: Children write a simple report (drawing pictures included) about their favorite sport to play. Add sports activities to their Spanish calendar created in weeks 15 & 16 Spanish Music Goals for this week: For children to listen, sing, and play songs from Spanish speaking countries. Vocabulary: Song, music, instruments Lesson: Play children music from three different Spanish speaking countries, ask the children which instruments do they hear, what country do they think the song is from, and what the song is trying to express. With basic percussion instruments have children play along with the music. In the second week, children will learn Spanish songs with movements. Permanent Materials: Listening station with music, both instrumental, and with words. Lyric sheets for the songs. Follow Up Activities Performance of songs for Children's House Classrooms, instrument name worksheets Art in Spanish Speaking Countries Goals for this week: For the children to learn about Visual Artists from Spanish Speaking Countries Vocabulary: Pablo Piccasso, Frida Kalho, Diego Rivera, Jose Campeche, Jose Bernal, Antonio Berni, and more artists. Lesson: Children will read a book about Latin American Artists, and will look at picture cards and observe the different types of art. Then children will have the chance to create their own art in the new styles. Permanent Materials: Picture Cards Follow Up Activities: Children finishing up their art projects.
