2 Introduction to Phoenix First Aid Phoenix First Aid is a first aid service and training provider, operating throughout regional and metropolitan Victoria. We specialise in delivering first aid specific, and other sport and fitness related nationally accredited training courses. Our aim is to provide you with the complete first aid experience, by managing your first aid and CPR accreditations within our active database, notifying you when your employees are due to update their training, and providing clients with a one-stop-shop service. 3 HLTAID001 Provide CPR The nationally recognized Unit of Competency HLTAID001 Provide CPR supersedes HLTCPR201A, HLTCPR201B and most recently HLTCPR211A Perform CPR. It is more commonly known as the CPR Update. This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) Guidelines. Course Outcome Statement of Attainment in HLTAID001 Provide CPR Course Duration The course is made up of a 2-3 hour practical session. Assessment Requirements There must be demonstrated evidence that the candidate has completed the following tasks at least once in line with state/territory regulations, first aid codes of practice, ARC guidelines and workplace procedures: Conducted a hazard assessment and identified strategies to minimise risk Demonstrated safe manual handling techniques Assessed airway, breathing and responsiveness of casualty Performed at least four minutes of uninterrupted CPR on an adult resuscitation manikin placed on the floor. Checking for response and normal breathing Recognising abnormal breathing Opening and clearing the airway Using correct hand location, compression depth rate in line with the ARC recommended ratio of compressions and ventilations Acting in the event of regurgitation or vomiting Followed the prompts of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Provided an accurate verbal report of the incident Responded to at least one simulated resuscitation scenario. 3

4 HLTAID002 Provide Basic Emergency Life Support Course Information HLTAID002 Provide Basic Emergency Life Support supersedes HLTFA201A, HLTFA201B and most recently HLTFA211A. It also supersedes Level 1 First Aid. It applies to all workers who may be required to provide an emergency response in a range of situations. Course Outcome This HLTAID002 course is Nationally Accredited and includes HLTAID001 Provide CPR. Both Units of Competency are printed on your Statement of Attainment. Course Duration The Provide First Aid course is a 4-hour practical class. Assessment Requirements There must be demonstrated evidence that the candidate has completed the following tasks at least once in line with state/territory regulations, first aid codes of practice, ARC guidelines and workplace procedures: conducted a hazard assessment and identified strategies to minimise risk demonstrated safe manual handling techniques assessed airway, breathing and responsiveness of casualty performed at least four minutes of uninterrupted CPR on an adult resuscitation manikin placed on the floor. checking for response and normal breathing. applied first aid procedures for the following conditions: allergic reactions cardiac arrest chocking and airway obstruction severe bleeding shock Provided an accurate verbal report of the incident Responded to at least one simulated emergency scenario. 4

5 HLTAID003 Provide First Aid The nationally recognised Unit of Competency code HLTAID003 Provide first aid supersedes HLTFA301B, HLTFA301C and most recently HLTFA311A. It also supersedes Level 2 or Senior First Aid. There are no pre-requisites for this course. This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to a casualty. The unit applies to all workers who may be required to provide a first aid response in a range of situations, include community and workplace settings. Course Outcome This Unit of Competency also includes training and qualifications in: HLTAID001 Provide CPR, and; HLTAID002 Provide basic emergency life support. The Provide First Aid course is ran over 2 x 3-4 hour practical classes. Pre-course theory must also be completed as part of this course. Assessment Requirements There must be demonstrated evidence that the candidate has completed the following tasks at least once in line with state/territory regulations, first aid codes of practice, Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines and workplace procedures: Conducted a hazard assessment and identified strategies to minimise risk Demonstrated safe manual handling techniques Assessed airway, breathing and responsiveness of casualty Performed at least four minutes of uninterrupted CPR on adult resuscitation manikin placed on the floor. 6 Following single rescuer procedure, including the demonstration of a rotation of operators with minimal interruptions to compressions Followed the prompts of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Conducted a verbal secondary survey Applied first aid procedures for the following: Allergic reactions Anaphylaxis Asthma Basic wound care Severe bleeding Burns Cardiac arrest Choking and airway obstruction Convulsions Envenomation (using pressure immobilisation) Fractures, sprains and strains (using arm slings, roller bandages or other appropriate immobilisation techniques) Poisoning Respiratory distress Shock Provided an accurate verbal report of the incident Responded to at least two simulated emergency scenario. Airway obstruction due to body position Appropriate duration and cessation of CPR Appropriate use of an AED Standard precautions and infection control Principles and procedures for first aid management of the following scenarios: Abdominal injuries Allergic reactions Anaphylaxis Bleeding control Burns Cardiac conditions Choking and airway obstruction Cold and crush injuries Diabetes 6
