2 Introduction and objectives of the Emergency First Aid /AED - Child care course The Child care /AED course prepares the candidate to assume a role of first-aider when called upon to react in an emergency situation requiring first-aid regarding young children. The candidate will provide basic first-aid in order to stabilize an injury while waiting the arrival of emergency response services. The Emergency First Aid course also prepares the candidate in his role of prevention allowing him to quickly recognize basic abnormal signs and symptoms and to react accordingly. It also allows the candidates to use an automated external defibrillator and to administer adrenalin by auto-injector in the situations prescribed by the Regulation respecting Professional activities that may be engaged in within the framework of prehospital emergency services and care. Learning objectives At the end of the course, the candidate will be able to: Recognize and define the five (5) links in the chain of survival tm ; Describe his/her role within the chain of survival tm ; Recognize the controllable and uncontrollable risks factors; List three (3) signs and symptoms of angina and heart attack; List three (3) signs and symptoms of a stroke and transient ischemic attack; List the four (4) steps of the pre-hospital intervention protocol; Know article 2 of the Charter of Human Rights and Freedom, article 1471 of the Civil Code of Quebec and the Civil Responsibility System of Quebec; Carry out a primary exam of a conscious victim and, an unconscious victim without complication; Describe the procedure needed when calling for the emergency response services; Carry out cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the clearing of airway obstructions in a child and an infant; Know the possible complications of resuscitation; Use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED); Demonstrate the basic treatment for bleeding (RED rest, elevation, direct pressure); Name three (3) signs and symptoms of shock; Demonstrate basic treatment for someone who has fainted or is suffering from shock; Recognize the symptoms and signs of an anaphylactic reaction; Apply the protocols of administration of epinephrine to a victim know to be allergic. Evaluation The evaluation for this course will be done progressively. The candidate will be evaluated through exercises, activities, practical sessions and practical situations.
3 Course requirements Prerequisites: No pre-requisite is needed to register for this course, only a 10 question pretest regarding the administration of epinephrine needs to be completed before the class. In order to successfully complete the course, participants will be required to perform certain in-class exercises. Attendance Attendance and active participation is required of the candidate in order to successfully complete this course. Attitude and behavior A respectful and safe behavior will be shown throughout the training without fail, or the candidate could be refused from the course.
