1 2 nd Save the Children Media Awards: Uncovering Child Hunger and Malnutrition DESCRIPTION Save the Children Media Awards: Uncovering Child Hunger and Malnutrition is Save the Children s way of recognizing existing audio-visual and print materials dedicated to presenting child hunger and malnutrition in the Philippines as an alarming and urgent concern in the pursuit of inspiring everyone to participate in the advocacy to eradicate these conditions. Finalists for each category will be chosen, based on merit, from all nominated materials, and awards will be given to the most distinguished materials from each of the following categories: 1. Article a. Most Outstanding Article (to be screened by judges) b. People's Choice Award (via online voting) 2. Photo a. Most Outstanding Photo (to be screened by judges) b. People's Choice Award (via online voting) 3. Audio Visual / Film a. Most Outstanding Full-Length Film (to be screened by judges) b. Most Outstanding Short Film (to be screened by judges) c. 2 MOST OUTSTANDING ARTICLE Eligibility 1. Author must be: (a) a Filipino citizen; (b) a Filipino with dual citizenship; (c) or a resident of the Philippines who is a former natural-born but who has acquired citizenship of another country. 2. Article must have been published between January 1, 2015 and July 30, 2016, either in print (newspaper, magazine, journals, campus publication) or electronic media (newspaper website, blog sites, social media sites, online journal, online publications) for the general reception of the public. Finalists from last year s Save the Children Media Awards are no longer eligible for nomination. 3. Article must have the theme Child Hunger and Malnutrition in the Philippines, capturing the alarming conditions of children and young people in these difficult situations. 4. Article may be in different forms (news, feature, editorial, blog entry, essay etc.) 5. Article must have a minimum of 300 words. 6. Article may use Filipino (Tagalog), English or Taglish. 7. The article should not infringe on the copyrights, trademarks, moral rights, rights of privacy/ publicity or intellectual property rights of any person or entity, and that no other party has any right, title, claim, or interest in the article. Plagiarism instantly disqualifies nominee. 8. The article must not, in the sole and unfettered discretion of the sponsor, contain obscene, provocative, defamatory, sexually explicit, or otherwise objectionable or inappropriate content. 9. Facts and data quoted from Save the Children are allowed. However, to maintain the organization s independence and neutrality in the selection process, works referencing Save the Children (i.e. having Save the Children as the subject of the material) will be a ground for ineligibility. 10. Employees of Save the Children are not allowed to nominate and/ or be nominated. Page 2 of 9
3 Mechanics 1. An individual or an organization may nominate an article. Nominating parties will have to submit a soft copy of the article in PDF format along with a filled out nomination form. 2. Nominations may be submitted online via at MediaAwards.PH@savethechildren.org with the subject heading below: [category]_mediaawards_[surname]_[first name] i.e. Article_MediaAwards_Villar_Marie Gold You will receive an or an SMS once we have received your nomination. 3. Deadline for nomination is July 30, 2016, 5:00 pm. Nominations sent after the said time and date will not be accepted. 4. All nominees will be subjected to the criteria set by the judges. Finalists will be selected from all nominations based on merit. One grand prize winner and one people s choice winner will be selected from the finalists. Announcement of finalists will be on August 31, Judges' decisions are final and irrevocable. Criteria for Judging ARTISTIC Creativity and Exceptionality (article should display writer s style that is different from the usual good use of words and language and well expressed ideas) Organization and Structure (article should have organized ideas concise, clear and coherent) CONTENT Relevance and Appropriateness to the Theme (article should highlight the current situation of hunger and malnutrition of children and young people in the country) Informative and Educational Value (accuracy and proper presentation of facts and information) 30% 30% TOTAL 100 % Page 3 of 9

Author must be: (a) a Filipino citizen; (b) a Filipino with dual citizenship; (c) or a resident of the Philippines who is a former natural-born but who has acquired citizenship of another country. 2. Photo must have been published between January 1, 2015 and July 30, 2016, either in print (newspaper, magazine or book) or online (newspaper website, blog sites, social media sites) for the general reception of the public. Finalists from last year s Save the Children Media Awards are no longer eligible for nomination. 3. Photo must have the theme Child Hunger and Malnutrition in the Philippines, capturing the alarming conditions of children and young people in these difficult situations. 4. The photograph should not infringe on the copyrights, trademarks, moral rights, rights of privacy/ publicity or intellectual property rights of any person or entity, and that no other party has any right, title, claim, or interest in the photograph. 5. The photograph must not, in the sole and unfettered discretion of the sponsor, contain obscene, provocative, defamatory, sexually explicit, or otherwise objectionable or inappropriate content. 6. The caption must be complete and accurate, sufficient to convey the circumstances in which the photograph was taken. Disguising or misrepresenting the origin of your content is cause for disqualification. 7. Facts and data quoted from Save the Children are allowed. However, to maintain the organization s independence and neutrality in the selection process, works referencing Save the Children (i.e. having Save the Children as the subject of the material) will be a ground for ineligibility. 8. Employees of Save the Children are not allowed to nominate and/ or be nominated. Mechanics 1. An individual or an organization may nominate a photo. Nominating parties will have to submit a digital copy of the photo along with a filled out nomination form. Page 4 of 9
5 2. Photo should be in digital format. Scanned copies (negatives, transparencies, photographic prints) are acceptable. Digital files should be 25 megabytes or smaller, in JPEG or JPG format. It should be at least 1,600 pixels wide (if horizontal) or 1,600 pixels tall (if vertical). 3. Photo should have a short caption that includes the date, location and event that will give the context of the photo. 4. Nominations may be submitted online via at MediaAwards.PH@savethechildren.org with the subject heading below: [category]_mediaawards_[surname]_[first name] i.e. Photograph_MediaAwards_Villar_Marie Gold You will receive an or an SMS once we have received your nomination. 5. 6 Criteria for Judging ARTISTIC Visual Impact (photos should appeal to human interest) Composition and Style (photos should be properly framed, well-composed, with proper mood and treatment) Technical Excellence (photos should have proper lighting, balance of colors, good contrast and saturation) CONTENT Relevance and Appropriateness to the Theme (photo should be relevant and representative of the current situation of hunger and malnutrition of children and young people in the country) Visual Storytelling (photo should effectively capture the story of the moment in relation to hunger and malnutrition) 15% 15% 30% TOTAL 100 % Page 6 of 9
7 MOST OUTSTANDING FILM Eligibility 1. For each of the sub-categories for Film (Most Outstanding Full-Length Film, Most Outstanding Short Film, and Most Outstanding Special Feature), the author must be: (a) Filipino citizen; (b) a Filipino with dual citizenship; (c) or a resident of the Philippines who is a former natural-born but who has acquired citizenship of another country. 2. Film must have been released/ shown/ published between January 1, 2015 and July 30, 2016, either commercially (cinemas, small movie houses, exhibitions, television) or online (Youtube, Vimeo, and other video platforms online) for the general reception of the public. Finalists from last year s Save the Children Media Awards are no longer eligible for nomination. 3. Film must have the theme Child Hunger and Malnutrition in the Philippines, capturing the alarming conditions of children and young people in these difficult situations. 4. Film may be of any style or genre (documentary, animation, experimental etc.). 5. Below are the running time limits for each sub-category: a) Full-length film 60 minutes b) Short film 30 minutes c) Special Feature 10 minutes 6. Film should not infringe on the copyrights, trademarks, moral rights, rights of privacy/ publicity or intellectual property rights of any person or entity, and that no other party has any right, title, claim, or interest in the film. 7. Film must not, in the sole and unfettered discretion of the sponsor, contain obscene, provocative, defamatory, sexually explicit, or otherwise objectionable or inappropriate content. 8. Facts and data quoted from Save the Children are allowed. However, to maintain the organization s independence and neutrality in the selection process, works referencing Save the Children (i.e. having Save the Children as the subject of the material) will be a ground for ineligibility. 9. 9 Criteria for Judging ARTISTIC Cinematography, Audio, and Editing (lighting and video, camera movements, camera angling, musical scoring, sound effects, dialogues and narrations, visual effects, pacing, flow, continuity, editing and creativity) Originality (production value, story concept) Style and Direction (art direction, setting, wardrobe, costume design, mood and treatment, execution of scenes) CONTENT Relevance and Appropriateness to the Theme (film should be relevant and representative of the current situation of hunger and malnutrition of children and young people in the country) Informative and Educational Value (accuracy and proper presentation of facts and information) 15% 15% 30% TOTAL 100 % **All submissions must be original work by at least one of the listed author(s)/ creator(s) as indicated by their nomination form.
