3 Section 1 Getting Started What is Java Web Start? Java Web Start is a platform-independent, secure, and robust deployment technology. It enables developers to deploy full-featured applications to end-users by making the applications available on a standard Web server. Using any Web browser, end-users can launch applications and be confident they have the most-recent version, without going through complicated installation procedures. With Java Web Start, a user launches Elluminate Live! by clicking on a URL in an or on a Web page. If Elluminate Live! is not present on the user s computer, Java Web Start automatically downloads all necessary files. It then caches the files on the computer so the application is ready to launch at any time. Java Web Start is available from Elluminate s support page at or from Sun Microsystems directly at Prerequisites In order to install Java Web Start, you must have permission to install software on your machine. You must either be an administrator on your machine, or be granted permission by an administrator to do installations. If you do not log on to your machine, and are its only user, you are probably the administrator. If you have previously installed software on your machine, you will be able to install Java Web Start. 4 Section 2 Installation of Java Web Start Installation Procedure When you first click on a link to an Elluminate Live! Session, your Internet browser should check to see if you have Java Web Start installed. If you do not have Java Web Start, you will be directed to a Web page from which you may install it. Java Web Start is also available from Elluminate s support page at Simply select your operating system and the version of Java Web Start that you would like to download, and press the Get Required Software button. When prompted, choose Open on the File Download menu. Select Open from the File Download menu Once the download is complete, Java Web Start will install itself. You will see a WinZip Self- Extractor window. Do not click Cancel during this installation. Java Web Start is installed when this dialog box disappears. You can verify the success of a Java Web Start installation by opening the Java Web Start Application Manager. Locate the Java Web Start icon on your desktop and double-click it. 5 Java Web Start icon This will open the Java Web Start Application Manager. If your installation was successful, you will first see a Java Web Start splash screen. The splash screen will disappear to be replaced by the Application Manager. If you can see the Application Manager, you have a successfully installed Java Web Start. Joining An Elluminate Live! Session Once you have successfully installed Java Web Start, you can join an Elluminate Live! session to complete the installation and test your audio. Proceed to Step 2 on and press Start Elluminate Live!. Enter your first name on the sign in page and once you enter the session, follow the instructors on whiteboard. 6 Section 3 Troubleshooting Java Web Start Java Web Start Reports a Bad Installation This typically happens when Java Web Start cannot find or launch commands in the default Java 2 Runtime Environment (J2RE). The J2RE needs to be on your system with the correct version before you can launch an application. The simplest way to fix this is to uninstall and re-install Java Web Start. Uninstalling Java Web Start Open your Control Panel. (On Windows 95/98/NT/ME, Click Start/Settings/Control Panel. On Windows 2000/XP, Click Start/Control Panel.) Open your Add or Remove Programs control. This control shows an alphabetical listing of all of the programs installed on your computer. Find Java 2 Runtime Environment on the list and remove it. Your computer is now ready to start the installation process again. Unable to Launch Specified Application If you see a Java Web Start dialog box that states Unable to Launch Specified Application, press the Details button and look for one of two messages: Unable to Load Resource: This is likely to happen in a network environment that has a firewall between your computer and the Internet and if the Java Web Start has not been configured with the right proxy settings. Java Web Start can typically pick these settings up automatically by querying the system or the default browser. Firewall issues may require the intervention of your Firewall Administrator. More information about firewalls is available at Invalid Argument Error: This is message occurs when your Internet Explorer cache is full. In Internet Explorer, select Internet Options from the Tools menu. On the General tab, click Delete Files, and click OK to delete the temporary Internet files.
