1 Art History Targeted Standard(s): NJCCCS Curriculum Map for Art History One Semester Standard 1.1 Aesthetics: ALL STUDENTS WILL USE AESTHETIC KNOWLEDGE IN THE CREATION OF AND IN RESPONSE TO VISUAL ART A. Knowledge 1. Formulate responses to fundamental elements within an art form, based on observation, using the domain-specific terminology of that art form. 2. Discern the value of works of art, based on historical significance, craftsmanship, cultural context, and originality using appropriate domain specific terminology. 3. Determine how historical responses affect the evolution of various artistic styles, trends and movements in art forms from classicism to post-modernism B. Skills 2. Formulate a personal philosophy or individual statement on the meaning(s) of art. STANDARD 1.4 Critique: ALL STUDENTS WILL DEVELOP, APPLY AND REFLECT UPON KNOWLEDGE OF THE PROCESS OF CRITIQUE A. Knowledge 1. Examine the artwork from a variety of historical periods in both western and non-western culture(s). 2. Categorize the artistic subject, the formal structure, and the principal elements of art used in exemplary works of art. 3. Determine the influence of tradition on arts experience, as an arts creator, performer, and consumer. STANDARD 1.5 History/Culture: ALL STUDENTS WILL UNDERSTAND AND ANALYZE THE ROLE, DEVELOPMENT, AND CONTINUING INFLUENCE OF THE ARTS IN RELATION TO WORLD CULTURES, HISTORY, AND SOCIETY A. Knowledge 1. Parallel historical events and artistic development found in visual art. 2. Summarize and reflect upon how various art forms and cultural resources preserve cultural heritage and influence contemporary art B. Skills 1. Evaluate the impact of innovations in the arts from various historical periods in works of visual art stylistically representative of the times. 2. Compare and contrast the stylistic characteristics of a given historical period through visual art. 6/2008 1

2 Enduring Understanding Studying art history promotes our understanding of the development of events within cultures. Art History reflects the time period, culture, geography, and status of a region s inhabitants. Studying over centuries, art has been an aesthetic expression of an emotional response to a social, political, or environmental influence. Art history helps us gain insight into the human experience of various cultures. While aesthetic interpretations may vary from culture to culture, region to region, and genre to genre, many artists have explored the same experiences and ideas. The process of reflection enables one to understand and appreciate art. Art can be used to record what one sees as well as what one feels and believes. Artists of different cultures express common ideas in different ways. Art is a distinct form of communication that enriches the understanding of other disciplines such as music. Art is an integral part of our environment. Artists use elements and principles of design to organize visual communication. Knowledge of elements and principles of art promotes understanding in art criticism. Essential Questions/ January through June How is art defined? Why do people create art? What makes art history relevant? Explain the difference between art criticism and art history. What are the four steps in the process of art criticism and how do you apply them? How is art defined from the cave-art through the Italian renaissance? What are the major works of art & architecture from cave images through the Italian Renaissance? What purpose does art serve in these times and cultures? Are there standards of beauty (aesthetics) basic to all cultures? Explain how works of art achieve aesthetic value by using the elements and principles. 6/2008 2

3 Course Goals: Students will learn historical and critical understanding of traditional and non-traditional art forms and visual practices. They will recognize major monuments, artists, methods and theories, and be able to assess the qualities of works of art in their historical and cultural settings. To teach students to develop familiarity with central elements and concepts in visual culture and increase their understanding of the methods of art criticism. To cultivate student s awareness of the power art has in various social and historical contexts over the centuries. General Course Objectives: 1. Students will understand the connection and relationship between the artist and the creation of art within and across a broad range of western and non-western societies and cultures. 2. Students will learn the comparative, historical, and formal analysis of visual forms through written and oral communication. 3. Students will be able to derive their personal expression of the meaning of art. 4. Students will gain insight to the relevance of the history of art and its impact on the world. 5. Students will learn process of art criticism (describe, analyze, interpret, decide) and how do you apply them? 6. Students will be able to articulate how successful works of art achieve unity by using the elements and principles of art ( line, shape, value, texture, space, form, color & unity, balance, variety, emphasis, rhythm, movement 6/2008 3
