1 BA Psychology ( ) Program Information Point of Contact Marianna Linz Support for University and College Missions Marshall University is a multi campus public university providing innovative undergraduate and graduate education that contributes to the development of society and the individual. The University actively facilitates learning through the preservation, discovery, synthesis, and dissemination of knowledge. University Mission Programs must state their Program Mission and specify how this mission supports both the University's Mission as well as any Mission that the College the Program is housed under happens to have. College Mission The College of Liberal Arts is committed to excellence in higher education. We have the responsibility to preserve, transmit, interpret, and create knowledge in an environment of free inquiry and expression. We will provide instruction that forms the core of the undergraduate curriculum for all Marshall University students so they may think critically and imaginatively, communicate effectively, and understand various dimensions of human experience. Within the disciplines of the college we will provide specialized instruction for undergraduate and graduate students, enabling them to develop the intellectual and moral abilities to live autonomous, sensitive, productive lives. We will be active scholars who contribute to the wider academic community. We will continue to use our expertise in the service of others. Program Mission The mission of the Psychology Department at Marshall University is to provide students with a comprehensive and contemporary review of psychological research, methods, and theoretical perspectives. We teach students how psychologists use the scientific method to understand, predict, and influence behavior. More specifically, we strive to help our students understand how human development, physiology, cognition, and affect influence human relationships and behavior. Support for College Mission The Psychology Department supports the mission of the College of Liberal Arts by teaching courses that convey current knowledge in the discipline in an atmosphere of free inquiry, while emphasizing the importance of continual learning. In addition, we offer courses that meet the social science requirements of the college, and provide training in writing, oral communication, and critical thinking. Support for University Mission

2 Marshall University's primary commitment is to provide quality undergraduate and graduate education. Marshall strives to produce an educated citizenry capable of living and working effectively in a global environment. The psychology program at Marshall plays an integral part in achieving that goal. Our General Psychology course (PSY 201) is a popular elective that fulfills the University s social science requirement and the specific requirements of several colleges such as the colleges of Business and Health Professions. A number of other psychology courses are required of majors in other colleges and departments. Completion of these courses provides students with an appreciation of the range of inquiry within the discipline of psychology and an introduction to the scientific method and its application to the understanding of human behavior. In addition, we endeavor to help students develop their critical thinking and communication skills, to solve problems, to appreciate the wide range of forces that influence human behavior, and to apply ethical principals in research and the treatment of others.
