2 EXECUTIVE SEARCH PROFILE California State University Fullerton and the College of the Arts seek an accomplished artist and educator who will advocate effectively for the College, and provide visible and dynamic leadership in the community. THE UNIVERSITY California State University, Fullerton is a major regional university in a vital, flourishing area that includes Orange County, metropolitan Los Angeles and the expanding Inland Empire. The beautiful, 236-acre campus is set in Fullerton in north Orange Provost County, about 25 miles from vice downtown President Los Angeles and about for 21 miles academic from nearby beaches. affairs Cal State Fullerton has more than 38,000 students and approximately 1,800 full- and part-time faculty members. The University offers 109 degree programs in eight colleges. Accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, CSUF is fourth in the nation for the number of bachelor s degrees awarded to minority students and first in California for the number of bachelor s degrees awarded to Hispanics. In 1957, Cal State Fullerton became the 12th state college in California to be authorized by the Legislature as a degreegranting institution. The following year, a site was designated for the campus to be established in northeast Fullerton. The property was purchased in This is the same year that Dr. William B. Langsdorf was appointed as the founding president of the school. Today, Cal State Fullerton is a comprehensive, regional university with a main campus that consists of 29 permanent buildings, a picturesque 26-acre Arboretum and student residence halls. 2
3 THE UNIVERSITY (continued) The campus also features: The Student Recreation Center, a $40.6-million, two-story 95,000-square-foot facility located west of Titan Gym; EXECUTIVE SEARCH PROFILE The Performing Arts Center, a $48-million complex that provides state-of-the-art facilities for audiences and performers alike, as well as instructional facilities for students; and, The $87.5-million Steven G. Mihaylo Hall, home to the Mihaylo College of Business and Economics the largest accredited business school in the state and nationally recognized for accreditation in both its business and accounting programs. The University is one of 23 campuses in the California State University system. Since the campus opened, CSUF has awarded degrees to more than 215,000 graduates. Many are leaders in business, government, education and the arts. THE COLLEGE OF THE ARTS Overview Composed of three departments Music, Theatre and Dance and Visual Arts the College of the Arts has 70 full-time faculty and 90 part-time faculty and a dedicated staff that serve more than 2,500 students. The College supports a rich mix of programs, as well as hundreds of public performances and public events each year in the community. The College s outreach to the community has been fostered over many decades and it is considered the creative heart of Orange County, widely regarded for contributing to the region. The College provides a student-centered, intimate learning environment that encourages individual achievement across the visual and performing arts spectrum. The College community is committed to the serious study of the essential principles and techniques that combine with imagination to form the basis for expression in the arts. Beyond the classroom, CSUF offers the College s students numerous opportunities for experiential learning and involvement in the artistic and creative communities. The university has partnerships with companies including DreamWorks and Nickelodeon and recent internships have included Disney, CBS, NBC Universal, Sony Pictures, Paramount Studios, the Mark Taper Forum, the J. Paul Getty Museum, National Endowment for the Humanities, and Smithsonian Institution. 3
4 EXECUTIVE SEARCH PROFILE Facilities Extensive specialized studio and performance spaces offer dedicated students, faculty and staff the opportunity to pursue and achieve professional and creative excellence. The Clayes Performing Arts Center, one of the best arts facilities in the nation, contains three distinct performance spaces: the 800-seat Meng Concert Hall, the 250-seat Young Theatre, and the 150-seat black-box Hallberg Theatre. In addition, the College is home to the Begovich Gallery and the Duff, West, and Exit Galleries, which feature frequently rotating exhibitions of graduate and undergraduate artwork of all disciplines to the public. Finally, the Grand Central Art Center is the result of a unique partnership between the university and the city of Santa Ana. Located ten miles south of the main campus, the art center is a 45,000 square-foot, half-city block deep and full city-block long, three-level structure and houses: live/studio spaces for college of the arts graduate students, the Grand Central Gallery, the Project room, the Grand Central Theater, the Gypsy Den Café, a Sales Gallery, classrooms, and a studio and living space dedicated to the center s international artist-in-residence program. Department of Music Accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music continuously since 1966, the Department of Music has been training students for professions in music for more than fifty years, and is home to approximately 400 students. The department offers Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Music degrees with concentration in Liberal Arts, Music History and Theory, Music Education, Performance, Composition, Accompanying, or Jazz and Commercial Music. Urging students to connect their University learning experiences to the larger world and to an artistic vision of excellence that surpasses their wildest imagination, Cal State Fullerton s Music Department is continuously expanding their international recognition through tours around the world. Many successful alumni make a large footprint in classical and commercial music performance and teaching in Southern California and throughout the world, and master classes. The department prides itself on one-on-one teaching and the superb facilities support first-rate instruction, practice and performance opportunities for students in the department, including the Clayes Performing Arts Center s Meng Concert Hall. 4
5 EXECUTIVE SEARCH PROFILE Department of Theatre and Dance The theatre program, accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre, is ranked with such prestigious schools as Juilliard, New York University, and Northwestern University while the dance program is ranked along such noteworthy programs as Cornell, Duke, and American University. The dance program has been fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Dance since The program prides itself on focusing on the development of the complete artist maintaining a creative balance between academic courses and professional training. The program enrolls students with 23 full-time faculty and 23 parttime faculty. Students have the option of a BA in Theatre Arts, BFA in Theatre Arts, MFA in Theatre Arts with various concentrations and BA in Dance. The dance curriculum combines practical training in technique, repertory, pedagogy, and extensive performance experience. The department offers a myriad of opportunities for students to experience the profession both inside and outside the university, including through its close proximity to major regional theatres and major film and television studies; numerous performances at the Kennedy Center with both the American College Theatre Festival and American College Dance Festival s National Festival; and the annual Senior Musical Theatre Showcase in New York City. Department of Visual Arts The largest of the three departments in the College, the Visual Arts Department serves more than 1,600 students and is situated in a 70,000 square-foot complex of studios, classrooms, computer and design labs, and galleries. Our new media and exhibition arts programs are among the strongest on the west coast in Ceramics, Crafts, Glass, Creative Photography, Drawing & Painting, Entertainment Arts & Animation, Exhibition Design, Graphic Design, Illustration, Jewelry & Metalsmithing, Sculpture, and Art Education & Art History. This department is home to 32 full-time faculty and 45 part-time faculty, and supports the Bachelor s of Arts and the Bachelor of Fine Arts, as well as the Master of Arts in Art and the Master of Fine Arts in Art. It is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. 5
6 EXECUTIVE SEARCH PROFILE Department of Visual Arts (continued) Department alumni exhibit internationally in museums and galleries from Los Angeles to Seoul, from New York to Tokyo, and Berlin to Rio de Janeiro. They teach in universities, colleges, and secondary arts and education programs. Our graduates have careers in the robust California arts scene, employed by the museums, galleries, design firms, and movie studios which they first made contact with while students at CSUF. Background Dr. Joseph Arnold has served since 2009 as Dean of the College of the Arts, a capstone to a 35-year record of outstanding service to both the University and the College, including serving 11 years as associate dean of the College of the Arts, two consecutive Provost terms as chair and of the Department vice President of Theatre and Dance, and for six years academic as vice chair of Theatre affairs and Dance. He has been the recipient of several California Arts Council grants and was honored as the 1993 Distinguished Professor of the College of the Arts on campus. Arnold served nearly two decades on the University s Academic Senate, and as a member of the University Advancement Committee, Dr. Arnold helped raise funds for the Clayes Performing Arts Center. He has been an effective steward of the College and plans to retire. As the leader of the College of the Arts, the Dean will play a significant role on the senior administrative team of the University, including serving on the University President s Advisory Board; provide vision and leadership for the College, respecting the varying priorities and needs of its departments; advocate for diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body; protect and expand the collaborative environment for faculty, staff, and students that already exists in the College. Reporting to the Dean are the Associate Dean, the Assistant Dean, and the chairs of the three departments. In addition, the Business Manager, Director of Development, Assistant Director of Development, Director of the Clayes Performing Arts Center, Director of the Grand Central Arts Center, H.R. Coordinator, and three administrative personnel report to the dean. 6
7 Opportunities & Challenges Advocating for the distinctive scholarly and pedagogical needs of the College of the Arts in the development and implementation of University-wide policies, procedures, and resource allocation; EXECUTIVE SEARCH PROFILE Addressing both facility and technical needs of the College through external or internal resources; Connecting and collaborating with outside organizations for student and faculty development; Playing a key role in hiring a number of new faculty in coming years; Providing vision and leadership for the implementation of the University s Strategic Plan within the College of the Arts; and, Working as an integral part of a new and dynamic senior leadership team engaged in charting an exciting future for California State University Fullerton. Qualifications The College of the Arts seeks a new leader who is an artist and an educator, deeply committed to supporting students, staff and faculty across all disciplines, advocating effectively for resources from both internal and external sources, and developing a unified vision for the College. The successful candidate will possess an appropriate terminal degree in a discipline and a record of scholarly and creative activity in a department represented in the College. In addition, the Dean will be expected to: Be a strong communicator and visible leader who will be proactive in reaching out to the community, enhancing connections and collaboration with various industries in the region; Have a student-centered focus and be transparent role model, with currency in the arts; Recruit and retain high-quality and diverse faculty; Provost Have knowledge and of best practices vice in arts President management; for academic affairs Understand the diverse facility and technical challenges that surface in running a complex arts college; and, Demonstrate success in resource development such as fundraising and grantsmanship. Preferred qualifications include the following: Experience in working with ethnically and culturally diverse students, faculty and staff, and in a shared governance environment; Leadership or management experience in a collective bargaining environment; A demonstrated commitment to faculty-mentored student research, other high-impact practices, and interdisciplinary programs; The ability to meet the University s strategic goals; and, Knowledge of and understanding of California State University System policies and procedures. 7
