6 A to Z (1 point) Directions: Turn your chunks into real words. Write all your spelling words and these new chunk words in ABC order. Color by Color (1 point) Directions: Use the code below to write each spelling word. Turn your spelling chunks into new words. Use the code below to write each spelling word. Color Code: a - e = red f - j = blue k - o = green 6 p - t = purple u - z = orange

7 Jump and Spell (1 point) Directions: Get a jump rope On a piece of paper or several pieces of paper write each spelling word large enough to see 5 feet away. Turn each spelling chunk into a word and write these new words as well. Spell each word as you jump rope. On the first jump, say the word. Each time you jump, spell the letter in the word. Jump and spell your list 5 times. Have a parent write a note in your Spelling Book saying you played Jump and Spell. This is what you will hand in to earn 1 point. 7

8 Rainbow Words (1 point) Directions: Write your first word with a purple crayon. Trace around the shape of the word with a blue crayon. It is important to keep the shape of the word. (see example) Trace around the blue line with a green crayon. Continue tracing in this order: yellow, orange, and red. Make Rainbow Words with the rest of your spelling list. Turn your spelling chunks into new words. Make rainbow words out of these new words. Example: help 8

9 Word Fractions (1 point) Directions: Write your first word vowels with a blue crayon and the consonants with a red crayon. Next to the word write the fraction of vowels to consonants in green crayon. Make Word Fractions with the rest of your spelling list. Turn your spelling chunks into new words. Make Word Fractions out of these new words. Examples: CARE 2/4 FROM 1/4 9

10 Tactile Spelling (1 point) Directions: Put some ketchup onto a cookie sheet or a piece of plastic wrap. Use your finger to spell all your spelling words and spelling chunks into the ketchup. Spell each word 2 times. Instead of using ketchup you could use: shaving cream whipped cream sand salt chocolate syrup Have a parent write a note in your Spelling Book saying you did Tactile Spelling. This is what you will hand in to earn 1 point. 10

11 Vowel or Consonant (1 point) vowels: a, e, i, o, and u (sometimes y, r, and w) consonants: all other letters (usually y, r, and w) Directions: Use a pencil to write each spelling word. Turn each spelling chunk into a new word. Write these new words also. Draw a green circle around each vowel. Draw a orange line under each consonant. Example: care 11

13 Chunk Changing (2 point) Directions: Write the spelling chunk you would like to work with at the top of the page. Write ten new words that have this chunk in them. Remember, the new words must have the same letters and sound as the chunk. -eat beat great heat sweat feet meat yes no yes no no yes 13

14 Spelling Steps (2 point) Directions: Look at the examples. Write a spelling step with all your spelling words. Turn each spelling chunk into a real word. Write these words into a spelling step. Examples: w wi win wint winte winter 14 h he hel help z zo zoo c ch che chee chees cheese

15 Five Times (2 point) Directions: Write each spelling word 5 times in your best handwriting. Change each spelling chunk into a new word. Write these new words 5 times as well. (in your best handwriting). WARNING: Words not written in your best handwriting will not be acceptable. 15

16 Nifty Mnemonics (2 point) Mnemonics is a way to help remember difficult information like how to spell a hard word. It is a phrase or sentence that will help you remember. Directions: You will need 2 pieces of paper. Choose a spelling word you have difficulty spelling. Write this word at the top of the first paper. Use each letter in the word to make a sentence or phrase. The letters must stay in order. Examples: ABOUT = A bear opens up trees. SAID = Slam any inside door. Write this sentence or phrase at the bottom of the page. Draw a large colorful picture that matches the sentence or phrase in the empty space between the word and the sentence. Do the same thing with 3 more words. Yes, you will need to use both sides of the paper. 16

18 Build a Word (3 point) Players: 2 or more Set Up Directions: Each player writes his/her spelling words on 1 inch graph paper. Only put one letter in each square. Turn each spelling chunk into a word write it onto the graph paper too. Remember to put only one letter in each square. Cut out the letters on the graph paper. Playing Directions: Mix up your letters and place them face down. Players need to keep their letters separate from the other player s letters. The player whose first name comes first in ABC order goes first. In turn each player rolls the dice, turns over that number of letters. The player forms as many words on his list as he can. The player moves built words aside and turns unused letters facedown. Play continues until one player has spelled each word on his list. Have a parent write a note in your Spelling Book saying you played Build a word. This is what you will hand in to earn 18 3 points.

19 Funny Faces (3 points) Players: 2 Set Up Directions: Bring a Funny Faces game board home from school. Playing Directions The player whose first name comes first in ABC order goes first. Trade spelling lists with a partner. Take turns giving each other words to spell aloud. When a player spells a word correctly, he writes it in a space on the side of the game board. Then he draws one part of the face. (When all the named parts have been drawn, a player may write words above bonus and keep drawing on the face.) If a player misspells a word, he loses his turn. His partner then spells the word aloud and shows it to him. Play continues until both partners have drawn a face. 19

20 Hang Man (3 points) Players: 2 Set Up Directions: You will need two pieces of paper, pencil and spelling list. Write your spelling words on the first piece of paper. Turn your spelling chunks into new words. Write these words too. Set the paper where you both can see it. Playing Directions The player whose first name has the most vowels goes first. Player 1 secretly chooses a word from the list you wrote. Player one draws a dash for each letter and the hang man gallows. Player 2 guesses a letter. If the letter is in the secret word, player one writes it in the correct space. If the letter is not in the secret word, player 1 draws a head on the gallows. Examples: 20 h

21 Hang Man continued... Player 2 continues guessing letters until the word is spelled or he is hanged. (see below) w h e n If player 2 spells the word he earns one point. If player 2 is hanged he earns one point. Players switch roles. Player 2 chooses the secret word and player 1 guesses. The first player to earn 4 points wins. 21

22 Hit or Miss (3 point) Players: 2 Set Up Directions: Each player needs a Hit or Miss board and a blank piece of paper. Each player will write 6 of the other player s words onto her Hit or Miss board. Cover your board with the blank piece of paper so that the other player will not see your board. Playing Directions: The player whose name has the most letters goes first. Player 1 names a set of coordinates. (example: B, 2) If player 2 has a word at this location she says, hit! and reads the word aloud. If player 1 can spell the word correctly, then player 2 draws and X over the word showing the word has been hit. A player s turn is over when she misspells a word or gets a miss. When player 1 s turn is over, player two continues. The game is finished when one player has hit all her partners spelling words. 22

23 Road Race (3 point) Players: 2 Set Up Directions: Bring a Road Race game board and two race car markers home from school. Color and cut out the two race car markers. Playing Directions: The player whose name has the most consonants goes first. Put the race car markers on start. Trade spelling lists with your partner. Take turns giving each other a word to spell aloud. When a player spells a word correctly, she writes the word in the first space on her side of the racetrack. Then she moves her car on top of the word. If a player misspells a word, she loses a turn. Her partner then spells the word out loud and shows it to her. The 23 first player to cross the finish line wins.

24 Spelling Snake (3 points) Players: 2 Set Up Directions: Bring a Spelling Snake game board home from school. Playing Directions: The player whose name comes last in ABC order goes first. Trade spelling lists with your partner. Take turns giving each other a word to spell aloud. When a player spells a word correctly, she writes the word in the snake. She starts at the head and writes one letter in each space. If a player misspells a word, she loses a turn. Her partner then spells the word out loud and shows it to her. The player who fills up the last space on the snake should draw the tail. If a player fills up the last space before writing all the letters in a word, she should draw enough new spaces to finish the word. Then he should draw the snake s tail. 24 The first player draws the snake s tail wins.

25 Players: 2 Directions: Spelling Tic-Tac-Toe (3 points) The player whose first name has the least vowels goes first. This player will use O. The player going second will use X. Trade spelling lists with your partner. Draw a tic-tac-toe board on a piece of paper. Player X says a word on your partner s list aloud. Player O spells the word out loud. If he is correct he should write an O on the tic-tac-toe board. If a player misspells a word, he loses a turn. His partner then spells the word out loud and shows it to him. Trade jobs. Keep taking turns until one player makes three O s or X s in a line on the board. If you fillup the board before either player makes a line, the player with the most markers on the board wins. Play 3 more times. Switch who goes first each time. 25

27 Directions: Dear Teacher,... (4 points) Write a letter to your teacher. Use all your spelling words in your note. Make sure you use all the spelling chunks in your note. You will have to change them into new words first. Underline all your spelling words and chunks with a pen. Directions: Letter Detective (4 points) Search for all your spelling words in an old newspaper or magazine. When you find a word cut it out an glue it onto a piece of paper. If you can not find a word, cut out LETTERS that make the word and glue them in order onto the paper. Find or make one word for each of this week s spelling chunks. 27

28 Directions: Spelling Riddles (4 points) Write a riddle for each of your spelling words. Each riddle should have 3 clues. (See example) Change your spelling chunks into new words. Write these new words into spelling riddles as well. Turn your paper upside down to write an answer key. Sample Spelling List 1.cat 2.who 3.jump 4.was 5.snake 6.soap 28 Example: 1. I have 3 letters. I have one tall letter. I rhyme with sat. Who am I? 2. I have 3 letters. I have a w. My s sounds like a z. Who am I?
