1 Wise Men Lesson At-A-Glance Scripture Reference Matthew 2:2-12 Lesson Focus Follow the star. Gather (10 minutes) Center Time Kids stamp stars, make play clay stars, and color Bible story pictures. Following the Star Circle Game Kids pass a star and follow the star holder s motions. Follow the Star Kids put a star in the sky for the wise men to follow. 2 Activate Faith (15 minutes) Lesson At-A-Glance Giving Gifts Kids give each wise man a gift for the baby Jesus. Star Light, Star Bright Kids trace the outline of a real star. Camel Camping Kids pretend to ride camels and camp out under the stars., Lesson Stickers Spark Story Bible Send (5 minutes) Good-bye Time Kids review today s story, receive a star sticker, and learn that they can follow the star. Prayer Time Kids ask God for help in following. Family Pages Sticky address labels, marker, clip art of stars (optional) Visit for more Spark content! 3 Gather (10 minutes) Center Time You may choose to set up all or some of these learning centers for kids to play in as they arrive in your classroom. Have helpers in each center to help kids with the activities. Kids can stay in one center or travel to more than one. When all kids have arrived and have had time to participate in at least one center, gently tell kids that it s almost time for Circle Time. Star Stamped in the Sky Cover a kid-sized table with long paper from a roll of paper. Secure the paper with masking tape underneath the table. Set out star stamps and stamp pads on top of the paper. As kids come over to investigate, tell them we are putting stars in the sky today. Stamp away with the kids and talk about today s story. There is a big, big star in our story today. The star told the wise men about the baby Jesus. The wise men decided to follow the star. Play Clay Blue Stars Roll play clay into individual balls. Place a ball in front of each chair at a kid-sized table. Place the cookie cutters and the rolling pins in the center of the table. As kids wander over, invite them to sit down and explore the play clay. Some kids will only want to explore. Other kids will want to make something. Show kids how to roll out the play clay and use the star cookie cutter. As kids invest in working with the play clay, talk about today s story. There is a big star in our story today. The big star was in the sky and these wise men decided the star was telling them something. The star was telling them that Jesus was born! Coloring Pages Roll of paper Masking tape Star stamps Stamp pads Blue play clay Star cookie cutters Kid-sized rolling pins Blank paper Crayons or markers Coloring Center Have coloring supplies and copies of the Spark Coloring Page available at a table for the kids to color. Be sure to help them put their names on their papers. Circle Time When it s time for Circle Time, give kids a sensory cue such as ringing a gentle bell or dimming the lights. Then blow bubbles all the way over to Circle Time. Let s follow the bubbles to Circle Time! Sit down in Circle Time and keep blowing bubbles until most of the kids have come over. Begin the welcome song even though kids are still trickling and twinkling over to Circle Time. Welcome to our class. It s time to welcome all our friends today. Let s sing our welcome song. 4 Sing to the tune of Mary Had a Little Lamb. Jesus loves a little girl, Little girl, little girl. Jesus loves a little girl, Her name is [Name]. Jesus loves a little boy, Little boy, little boy. Jesus loves a little boy, His name is [Name]. Be sure to include everyone who is in your circle. Use any of the following when naming big people in your circle: Jesus loves a leader. Jesus loves a daddy. Jesus loves a mommy. Jesus loves a grandpa. Jesus loves an auntie. Jesus loves a teacher. Jesus loves a pastor. Jesus loves everyone! I wonder what story we will hear today. Pause because kids may have something to say. Our story today is about a star! The star is so bright. Wise men decided to follow it a long, long way to see the baby Jesus. Let s sing Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star to remind us about the wise men. Be sure and use the hand motions. Twinkle, twinkle little star, (twinkle your fingers) How I wonder what you are. (twinkle your fingers) Up above the world so high, (twinkle your fingers up over your head) Like a diamond in the sky. 5 Prayer Time Make your hands twinkle by stretching out your fingers and wiggling them. Keep twinkling your stars! Twinkle, twinkle, twinkle, and listen while I sing a twinkling star prayer. Sing to the tune of Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. Twinkle, twinkle little star, God go with me near and far. God go with me every day, Helping me to find your way. Twinkle, twinkle little star, God go with me near and far. Repeat the prayer song so kids may sing along with you. Open the Bible (15 minutes) Wise Men Storytelling Take out your Spark Story Bible and open to Wise Men on pages Read the story out loud and point to the corresponding pictures. Look for Squiggles the caterpillar in each picture. Ask kids what they think Squiggles is feeling or doing. Encourage them to make a face like Squiggles. The wise men followed a star. Have you ever followed a star? (Nooo!) The wise men gave the baby Jesus some gifts. They gave him gold. Hold up one finger. The wise men gave baby Jesus frankincense. Hold up two fingers. The wise men gave baby Jesus myrrh. Hold up three fingers and keep holding them up. How many gifts did the wise men give baby Jesus? (three) The wise men traveled for a long, long time. Do you like to travel in the car or airplane or bus? (yes, no) Spark Story Bible Following the Star Circle Game This activity is a circle game. Gather kids in a circle sitting down. Explain the game. Begin by holding up the star. This is a star. Let s pass the star around the circle. Help kids pass the star around the circle. Some kids will need to be cued to pass the star to their neighbor. After the star has made it around the circle, add the next layer of the game. Let s pass the star around again. When I say follow the star, everyone stop. The friend who is holding the star will do a motion like clapping or wiggling or twinkling. Our job is to follow the motion. Everyone will have a turn holding the star. Stop the star the first few times with adults so the kids get the idea. Make sure everyone has a turn. Star (stuffed, cookie cutter, cutout, or wand) Ages 2-3 Classroom Leader Guide. 6 Follow the Star Make sure everyone has a leaflet. Hold up your leaflet so kids can see the first activity. Point to the activity with your index finger. Here s a picture of the wise men. I wonder what is missing from our picture. (the star) The wise men followed a star. The star is missing! We must help the wise men follow the star. Pass out the star stickers. I have some star stickers. I will give you all a sticker. Let s put the star in the sky. Put your star sticker in the leaflet sky and hold it up for all to see. There, the star is in the sky. The wise men can follow the star. We can follow the star, too! There is no right or wrong place for the star sticker on the leaflet. Lesson Stickers Activate Faith (15 Minutes) Giving Gifts Make sure everyone has a leaflet. Hold up the leaflet and point to the three wise men. Here are the wise men again. The wise men gave the baby Jesus gifts. Hmmmm... where are the gifts? I don t see any gifts. Hold up the stickers. Here are the gifts! Let s help the wise men give the baby Jesus some gifts. Here come the gifts. Give each kid three stickers. Let s give the wise man wearing blue a gift to give. Put a gift sticker in the circle for the blue-robed wise man and show the kids. Let s give the wise man wearing green a gift to give. Put a gift sticker in the circle for the green-robed wise man and show the kids. Let s give the wise man wearing red a gift to give. Put a gift sticker in the circle for the red-robed wise man and show the kids. Now all the wise men have gifts to give the baby Jesus! Lesson Stickers Star Light, Star Bright Hold up the leaflet and point to the Star Activity with your index finger. I see a star! The wise men followed a star. Let s follow the star too! Hold up your index finger. I m going to use my finger to follow the star. Begin tracing the outline of the star. Let s all follow the star. Just use your finger to go around the star shape. 7 Camel Camping Gather kids in a group. Open the Spark Story Bible to page 220. Point to the camels at the bottom of the page. The wise men traveled a long time to see the baby Jesus. They didn t ride in a car or an airplane. The wise men probably used camels. Let s pretend to ride camels. Pretend to ride camels by galloping around the room. Stop when you get tired and need to rest. I am so tired of traveling. I need to rest. Sit down. The wise men didn t stay in hotels when they got tired. They slept outside under the stars. Let s take a rest. Lie down. Look up at the ceiling. Let s look for stars in the sky. Pretend to count the stars. Get up and repeat traveling by camels and sleeping under the stars. Repeat as time allows. Spark Story Bible Send (5 Minutes) Good-bye Time Prior to the session, print some star stickers using sticky address labels and a clip art image of a star. If you don t have time, draw a star on each label with a marker. Gather kids in the Circle Time area. Tell me about our story today. Pause for kids ideas. Our story today was called Wise Men. The wise men followed a special star. The star led the wise men to the baby Jesus. We can follow a star, too! I have a star sticker for everyone today. Hold up the sticker and smile. Go around the circle and give each kid a sticker. As you give each kid a sticker, say, [Name] can follow the star. Sticky address labels Marker Clip art of stars (optional) Hold up the leaflet and point to Faith on the Go! on the back. 8 Prayer Time For this prayer, first show kids your twinkling hand star. Twinkle your hand and move it up and down and all around. See if kids follow your twinkling star. My star is twinkling and moving all around. Let s all make a twinkling hand star. I wonder if your twinkling hand star can follow my twinkling hand star. I bet it can. Start moving your star. After a few star moves, introduce today s prayer. Keep moving your star. Our prayer today goes like this: God, help me to follow your star. Say the prayer every time you move your star. Kids will follow your star with their stars and begin to join in with the words. End the prayer by having your star fall into your lap and say Amen.
