Support is provided focusing on the person s strengths and respecting their choices and desires. Position objective: Sunshine s Arts Facilitator Ceramics, is responsible for guiding and supporting all art students to develop and progress their dreams and desires through the art making process, as well as, promoting and delivering quality arts programs and exhibitions 1
2 Key Responsibilities and Duties 1. Providing Support to People with a Disability Supporting people to develop and live great lives by using art as an expressive medium Facilitating classes in ceramics and clay work Assisting in the design and implementation of teaching methods with other art staff and arts coordinator, for specific groups and projects tailored to the needs of students with a disability Demonstrating practical abilities and judgements in providing arts tuition in a group setting Provide support with students personal care needs if required 1.1 Person Centred / Individual Support Empower the people you support by consulting with them on issues about their own art making and decisions; Address any complaints or conflicts promptly; Respect people s personal preferences and encourage their personal growth and development when meeting their needs; Show consideration, understanding and respect for the people you support and their families; Ensure you use strength based, respectful language at all times when speaking or referring to the people you support and that their dignity is maintained at all times; Ensure people are supported in accordance with their own individual cultural and religious beliefs and maintain cultural sensitivity and awareness; Advise the coordinator and team leaders regarding significant changes to the individual needs and progress of the people you support; Provide appropriate models in terms of dress, language, interaction and general presentation. 1.2 Living Skills Development Assist the people you support to make choices and decisions about their creativity and expression; Provide support for developing new and existing skills as identified to enhance independence in the art making process. 1.3 Relationship and Social Role Development Promote activities that offer meaningful experiences and increase opportunities for skill development Support and enhance individual s on-site and off-site recreation and/or art making, social and development opportunities; Establish and maintain open and effective relationships with the people you support and their family members and carers. 1.4 Personal Care Assist the Direct Support Person with personal care needs of the people you support when required as to meet their personal care, presentation and hygiene needs; Ensure you are familiar with specific manual handling techniques outlined in each person s manual handling profile in the event you need to assist a DSP whilst in class. 1.5 Physical, Emotional and Behavioural Health and Well-being Provide support and assistance to promote good health and wellbeing, including assisting the people you support and the team with: their nutrition, fitness, exercise and stress management; Action and where necessary report any concerns brought to your attention about people s safety, health or wellbeing; 2
3 Be familiar with contingency plans in the event of an emergency or critical incident involving the staff team and the people you support; Ensure that Eating and Drinking (Dietary) Plans developed for people are implemented when necessary while the person is attending art/ceramics class; Provide First Aid/CPR and seek emergency medical care when needed; Serve as a role model and mentor to the people you support, demonstrating and modelling desired behaviours; Actively participate in the development, maintenance and implementation of Behaviour Support Plans and/or strategies when required; Ensure the service maintains effective infection control and food hygiene procedures at all times. 1.6 Community liaison / Advocacy Work on behalf of the people you support to overcome barriers and resistance to their full social and community inclusion; Develop and maintain positive communication links with families and other service providers; Promote a positive image of the organisation and its services to others in the community; Display a professional attitude and appearance at all times when accompanying people you support in the community; Intervene and report as soon as possible to your supervisor any instances of any action which infringes the rights and safety of any person Sunshine supports. 2. Teamwork, communication and feedback Positively and proactively support and contribute to your team, according to work plans and supervisory direction; Participate in team meetings and training programs as required and promote innovation, continuous improvement and best practice principles at all times; Openly and calmly address any workplace conflicts, disagreements or misunderstandings as soon as possible with a genuine commitment to resolving them and maintaining positive and effective working relationships with your fellow employees - seek assistance from your supervisor or human resources if you need to; Actively participate in annual performance evaluations with your supervisor Reflect on your own performance and be willing to discuss it openly and honestly to ensure your own continued professional growth and development; Participate fully in the working roster, including outside hours events and activities if required and being punctual and reliable; Behave in line with Sunshine s Code of Conduct and all legislation governing respectful and appropriate workplace behaviour and actively promote and support the same behaviour amongst all of your team; 3. Administration & Work Environment Ensure that you read all relevant documentation, for the people you support whilst at work and update and maintain all appropriate reports and administrative records in accordance with Sunshine s policies and procedures; Remember that all information about the people you support is confidential and must be kept confidential except where required to be passed on for the purposes of providing the service to that person; Never speak about someone you support in front of them or any other person you support unless that person is participating in the conversation; Inform the people you support of the content of their personal records and correspondence if requested, whilst ensuring confidentiality is maintained; Follow policies and procedures for handling and recording all use of money; Ensure that a clean and tidy work environment is maintained; Complete timesheets and all other Sunshine administrative records as required; 3
4 Treat all Sunshine property, including vehicles, IT and other equipment with due respect and care, including following all cleaning, maintenance, repair and reporting requirements; Ensure work performance, practice and the delivery of service is consistent with the Disability Service Standards, Sunshine s policies and procedures and Sunshine s Code of Conduct. 4. Work Health and Safety / Duty of Care 4.1 Report and document within the stated time frame any and all: incidents, near misses or injuries; safety or maintenance problems or issues that need to be addressed; shortages (missing items) in First Aid Kits; faulty or unsafe equipment; WH&S issues or concerns (report also to the WH&S Representative for your area); and medication that you have been prescribed that may impact on your ability to perform your duties, or any other reason you feel you may be unable to perform your duties safely and without causing yourself or anyone else any harm. 4.2 Ensure at all times that you: Maintain a safe, clean and hygienic work environment; perform all work in accordance with WH&S legislation, regulations, Sunshine s policy and procedure and safe work practices (including Safe Work Procedures or Method Statements and/or Standard Operating Procedures and site safety rules) and in a manner that does not affect your own health or the health and safety of others; use all organisation equipment safely and according to operating instructions; store all organisation equipment safely and securely after use; follow through with any Hazard Elimination Requests recommended by the WH&S Group; wear and maintain any personal protective equipment (PPE) you are provided with for your work and review WH&S Group minutes each month. 4.3 Participate in: emergency response rehearsals and reviews (including fire evacuation practices); workplace consultative meetings; encouraging safe behaviour of your colleagues; the development and review of Safe Work Procedures or Method Statements and other operating procedures relating to your work; periodic training in safe work practices, manual handling, systems requirements and where identified as necessary, re-training; any other work health and safety activities deemed necessary by the organization; and rehabilitation and return to work program requirements, if injured. 5. General Duties You may be required to perform other duties as necessary to fulfil the objectives of this Position as set out on page 1. 4
5 Key Skills, Knowledge & Attributes 1. Judgement and Decision Making The ability to work independently without supervision, collaborate with others and contribute positively in a team environment is essential. All decisions must be made in accordance with position descriptions, service operational procedures, individual Care Plans and Sunshine s policies and procedures and then implemented and supported. Problem solving skills, flexibility and lateral thinking are essential to approach a wide range of tasks and issues. 2. Communication This role requires you to be able to listen effectively, convey and receive ideas, information and direction and to speak, read and write in English. You must also be willing and able to learn Key Word Signing or other augmentative communication skills if required to effectively provide support. 3. Ethical Behaviour It is essential that you understand and acknowledge that the way you behave in conducting this role directly influences the quality of life of the people you support and Sunshine s reputation and therefore demonstrate commitment to behaving in accordance with Sunshine s Values and Code of Conduct at all times. If ever faced with an ethical dilemma or situation you are uncertain or uncomfortable with (on an ethical basis) you must raise that issue with your supervisor. 4. 6 5. Qualifications Current First Aid Certificate or undertaking to obtain the certificate within the first 3 months of employment is an essential criteria; Current full NSW driving license along with willingness and ability to drive a Sunshine vehicle up to a 12 seater bus is an essential criteria; Certificate IV in Disability Work, Degree in Social Sciences, Degree or Diploma in Fine Art or Art Therapy or other relevant qualification is desirable. 6. Experience 1 year minimum working in the arts for people with a disability or mental illness. Effectively work as part of a team Effectively teaching in group settings 7. Working Conditions While working in this position, you may be required to deal with the following conditions: 1) unconventional schedules; 2) possible exposure to blood borne pathogens; 3) possible exposure to profanity, violent and/or offensive behaviour from the people you support. As Sunshine changes its services to best meet the needs of the people we support, it may be necessary to restructure and/or relocate your position to another site, service or to support other clients at any time. We will give you reasonable notice of these changes. This Position Description may also be reviewed from time to time to meet the changing needs of our services and the people we support.
