Program Philosophy The skills neee by a shool psyhologist have hange onsierably sine the ays of the psyhologial examiner. Althogh a otoral egree is not reqire for ertifiation as a shool psyhologist in most states (inling Pennsylvania), most states o now reqire a 6-hor Master's egree or a "Speialist" egree. In view of the hanging role of the shool psyhologist an the epth of training reqire for entry an sessfl pratie, the program at Lehigh prepares shool psyhologists to enter the fiel at a minimal level of ational Speialist (.S). Given that reqirements for liensre for inepenent private pratie by psyhologists in Pennsylvania an most other states reqire a otoral egree, an the primary manner of avaning the fiel of shool psyhology is throgh researh, skills to aomplish these goals annot be traine within the typial.s. program, an reqire training onsistent with a otoral egree. To meet this nee, the Shool Psyhology program offers a otoral program (Ph. Althogh there is no one theoretial orientation whih an provie a omprehensive, empirially-vali approah to proviing shool psyhologial servies, the researh offere from a behavioral orientation provies perhaps the largest single sore of researh sbstantiating all aspets of servie elivery, assessment, intervention, an onsltation. To partially meet this nee, the otoral shool psyhology program has evelope a Health/Peiatri sbspeialization for stents intereste in eveloping aitional ompetenies beyon those alreay ientifie within the existing program. The overall objetive of this sbspeialization is to evelop shool psyhologists as leaers in the researh an pratie of meeting the eational nees of hilren with health onerns. Seon, the Conseling Psyhology program is primarily fose on assessment an treatment of alts, while the Shool Psyhology program is fose on hilren an aolesents. Finally, the primary researh thrsts in the Conseling Psyhology program are in the areas of voational/areer onseling, mltiltral perspetives, spervision, an personality theory. These researh interests are qite ifferent from those of Shool Psyhology falty. Despite these ifferenes, it is important to note that the two programs share ommon missions an interests in the training of otoral-level psyhologists who are sientist-pratitioners.
