The Minor in Computer Siene is available for students majoring in disiplines other than Computer Engineering. The ertifiate program in Managing Information on the World Wide Web was designed for non-csc majors. Students who omplete the series of seven ourses will be able to install and maintain a reasonably omplex web server, reate home pages, and link pages to loal databases. The Department offers two programs in onjuntion with other units: with the Mathematis Department, a joint program in Mathematis and Computer Siene (refer to the Mathematis setion of this atalog); and with the Eletrial and Eletronis Engineering Department, a BS and MS in Computer Engineering (refer to the Computer Engineering setion of this atalog). Windows workstation laboratories support both lower and upper division instrution. High-end laboratories provide aess to Linux and RISC servers and workstations. Speialized laboratories support systems, ommuniations and networking, and omputer arhiteture instrution. A graduate laboratory is designed to provide graduate students with aess to a variety of advaned workstations. All students have aess to the Internet and the World Wide Web. Majors are urged to join the student hapter of the Assoiation for Computing Mahinery or the IEEE Computer Soiety. Students with high sholasti ahievement may be invited to join Upsilon Pi Epsilon, the National Honor Soiety in Computer Siene. The University s proximity to many California State agenies and major omputer orporations provides numerous opportunities for part-time student employment. Program Eduational Objetives The objetives of this program are to prepare graduates to: analyze, design, and implement a omputerized solution to a signifiant problem in a team environment using appropriate tools; enter a professional omputer siene position or an appropriate graduate program; 216 / omputer siene alifornia state university, saramento

2 omputer siene ommuniate effetively through speaking, writing, and graphis; pursue life-long learning and ontinued professional development; and be aware of ethial issues and soietal onerns relating to omputers in soiety and apply this knowledge in the ondut of their areers. Undergraduate Programs All students are admitted as pre-computer Siene majors. Registration in upper-division ourses numbered 133 and above is restrited to Computer Siene and Computer Engineering majors. Other students need to obtain approval from the CSC department hair. To hange to the Computer Siene major, students who have ompleted the following lower division (pre-major) requirements are required to omplete and submit a Change of Major form to the Computer Siene Department offie along with transript opies: CSC 015, CSC 020, CSC 028, CSC 035, CSC 060, and MATH 030 and MATH 031. Course Repeat Poliy: Students may repeat a omputer siene ourse one at most without permission. Additional repeats must be approved by the instrutor and the Department Chair by ompleting a Request to Repeat petition and submitting it to the Department. Work Experiene: Students may reeive a limited amount of aademi redit for relevant work experiene in omputer siene. There are many opportunities for students to work part-time in the federal, state and loal governments. The number of private employers is also inreasing as new high-tehnology industry ontinues to move to the Saramento area. Work experiene often leads to a permanent position upon graduation. 4 omputer siene Graduate Programs The Computer Siene Department offers Master s Degree programs in Computer Siene and Software Engineering, Certifiates of Advaned Study for students enrolled in these programs, and a Master s Degree joint program in Computer Engineering. The primary goal of eah of these programs is to prepare students to serve as effetive professional omputer speialists in a soiety whih inreasingly depends on omputer usage and tehnology. A seondary goal is to prepare interested students for researh, teahing, or further study toward the Ph.D. in Computer Siene. The programs also enable individuals with bakground in other areas to obtain the skills and knowledge neessary to enter and advane in employment in omputer-related industries. The admission requirements for the Master s in Computer Siene and the Master s in Software Engineering are idential. Completion of the Master of Siene in Computer Siene requires advaned ourse work in a minimum of three of the following areas: omputer arhiteture/omputer engineering, database management systems, intelligent systems, networks and ommuniations, software engineering, and systems software. Completion of the Master of Siene in Software Engineering requires advaned ourse work in the software engineering area. Teahing assoiateships are available for a small number of qualified graduate students; these students assist in instrution of undergraduate ourses, supervision of laboratory work, and aid faulty members in researh projets. Interested persons should apply in the Department offie. Due to the large number of graduate students in omputer siene who are employed, most graduate level ourses are offered in the late afternoon or evening. Admission Requirements Admission as a lassified graduate student requires: a baalaureate degree; a minimum 3.0 GPA in the last 60 units attempted; GRE general test; mathematial preparation inluding two semesters of alulus and one semester of alulus-based probability and statistis orresponding to Saramento State ourses MATH 030, MATH 031, STAT 050; omputer siene lower division preparation inluding programming profiieny, disrete strutures, mahine organization, and UNIX and PC-based program development environment profiieny orresponding to Saramento State ourses CSC 015, CSC 020, CSC 028, CSC 035, and CSC 060 and as evidened by a pass on the graduate student plaement test or a baalaureate degree in omputer siene; and omputer siene advaned preparation as evidened by a 3.25 GPA in the following Saramento State upper division omputer siene ourses or their equivalent elsewhere: CSC 130, CSC 131, CSC 132, CSC 137, CSC 138, CSC 139. Appliants with defiienies in the admission requirements area are advised to remove any suh defiienies before applying. Admission Proedures Appliations are aepted February through Marh for fall semester and August through September for spring semester. All prospetive graduate students, inluding Saramento State graduates, must file the following with the Saramento State Offie of Graduate Studies, River Front Center 206, (916) : an online appliation for admission; two sets of offiial transripts from all olleges and universities attended, other than Saramento State; and offiial GRE general test sores Appliations must be reeived by April 1 (fall semester) and Otober 1 (spring semester). Advanement to Candiday Eah student must file an appliation for Advanement to Candiday, indiating a proposed program of graduate study. This proedure should begin as soon as the lassified graduate student has: removed any defiienies in admission requirements; ompleted at least 12 units of graduate level (200 series) omputer siene ourses with a minimum 3.0 GPA; and passed the Writing Profiieny Examination (WPE) or seured approval for a WPE waiver. Students must have been advaned to andiday before they an register for Master s thesis or projet. Advanement to Candiday forms are available in the Offie of Graduate Studies. The student fills out the form after planning a degree program in onsultation with a Computer Siene graduate advisor.
