2 Dear World Language Eduator: We are pleased to announe that the California Language Teahers Assoiation (CLTA) and the California World Language Projet (CWLP) are again o-sponsoring the Annual Summer Seminar this oming summer. The 26 th Annual Summer Seminar will take plae at the University of California, Santa Barbara, from July 17-22, 2015 and will offer a variety of program strands espeially designed to promote innovative praties in World Language eduation that support our students in aquiring the level of ompetene essential to be ollege, areer and world ready! Centered on the theme of Common Core, World Readiness and Interulturality: The Passport to Global Leadership, the seminar will offer partiipants general sessions exploring a number of topis that support the identified theme and seven strands where the partiipants will engage with their peers and failitators in applying onepts learned in the general sessions. Partiipants will jointly develop instrutional strategies, lessons and themati units to implement with students in their lassrooms. This year s Summer Seminar is espeially designed to equip World Language eduators with the knowledge and skills needed to engage World Language learners and develop the world readiness that they need to sueed in and ontribute to our 21st entury soiety. To this end, the Seminar s General Sessions as well as the individual ontent strands will fous on sharing the key priniples of the Common Core Literay Standards for Tehnial Subjets and identify the key areas of intersetion among the World Language Content Standards, the English Language Development (ELD) Standards, and the Career and Tehnial Eduation (CTE) Standards. CLTA and CWLP have ollaborated in raising and leveraging funding to over many of the Seminar s program osts and keep the overall ost to the partiipants as low as possible. Partiipants are also enouraged to explore diverse soures of funding at their shools and distrits to support their partiipation in this year s Seminar. Funding soures suh as Common Core professional development funds, Title I, Title II Part A, Title III (English Learners), Perkins/CTE, et., are all possible soures of revenue to support your partiipation at this year s Summer Seminar. Also, please see page six of this brohure for other potential funding soures. Again, we are delighted to be able to offer the Summer Seminar for the upoming summer and hope to have the partiipation of many World Language eduators. The Seminar has always been a professionally enrihing experiene and we are onfident that this summer s Seminar will be just as inspiring as we onvene in Santa Barbara and jointly explore how to more effetively prepare California students to be ollege, areer and world ready! 3 26 th Annual Summer Seminar for Language Teahers University of California, Santa Barbara July 17-22, 2015 Common Core, World Readiness and Interulturality: The Passport to Global Leadership GENERAL SESSIONS: Topis and Speakers Interulturality: The Passport to Global Leadership Jaque Bott Van Houten is the urrent president of ACTFL and the World Language Speialist at Jefferson County Publi Shools. Prior to this position, Van Houten served as the World Language & International Eduation onsultant at the Kentuky Department of Eduation, where she developed standards, oordinated visiting teahers from Spain and China programs, and provided professional development to teahers and administrators statewide. Jaque taught and has been involved in nearly all eduational initiatives pertaining to the teahing of World Languages and ultures. She is the past president of the National Counil of State Supervisors for Languages (NCSSFL) and of National Network for Early Language Learning (NNELL), and was a major ontributor in the development of LinguaFolio. Currently, her major fous of researh and professional engagement is in the area of interulturality and on transforming learning environments that inspire and engage Jaque Bott Van Houten learners to beome linguistially and ulturally ompetent. Common Core, World Readiness and Learner Engagement Gregory Dunan is a former teaher of Spanish, high shool administrator, and oordinator of World Languages and international eduation for the Georgia Department of Eduation. He now devotes his time and energy to supporting his olleagues in providing rih, reative and innovative world language instrution for their students. His urrent work inludes ollaborating with World Language eduators in urriulum and assessment design, program development, and assessment. He has authored and ollaborated in the authorship of numerous publiations in the field of World Language eduation, and he has led the development of Emmy Award-winning distane learning programming in Japanese and Spanish. He has been honored with numerous state, regional, and national awards in addition to being reognized by foreign governments for his work to further language eduation. Ali Moeller Gregory Dunan Interulturality, Where Language Meets Culture: From Theory to Classroom Pratie Ali Moeller is the Edith S. Greer Professor at University of Nebraska, Linoln. Her areas of sholarly interest inlude interultural ommuniation, World Language teaher eduation, integration of digital media in language aquisition, distane eduation and language assessment. She is past president of the Amerian Assoiation of Teahers of German, the National Federation of Modern Language Teahers Assoiations, is a member of the Board of Diretors of ACTFL and serves as AP College Board Advisor in German language and ulture. She has published widely in professional journals inluding MLJ, Foreign Language Annals, CALICO and Unterrihtspraxis and is a frequent presenter at national and international onferenes. She has been the diretor of two FLAP grants; one for professional development of teahers of Chinese ( ) and another for professional development for teahers of Spanish ( ). She has also served as the Diretor and PI for four STARTALK programs for both teahers and students of Chinese. Sheri Hurlbut is urrently a PhD andidate at the University of Nebraska. She served as the diretor of the University of Nebraska, Linoln STARTALK Teaher Program from and was program oordinator for the STARTALK Student Program from Sheri is a ertified German language and ulture 7-12 eduator and served in the position of German language oordinator at the university level. Her urrent researh interests inlude teaher professional learning, interultural ompetene, Seond Language Aquisition and Assessment, and mixed methods researh. She speializes in urriulum development with an emphasis on online learning and Web 2.0 tehnology and has reently ollaborated with other olleagues in the development of a graduate-level online professional development ourse for German teahers fousing on instrutional planning, writing, and assessment. 4 26 th Annual Summer Seminar Program Strand Offerings A: Aademi Language, Literay, and Culture for Heritage Speakers of Spanish: Aligning Heritage Speakers Course Content with Advaned Plaement Curriula Themes Failitators: Antonio Tunzi, Teaher of Spanish for Heritage Speakers, San Franiso Unified Shool Distrit, Eduardo Muñoz, Former Teaher of Spanish, Literay Coah, Prinipal and urrently a PhD Candidate at Stanford University, with the support of additional guest speakers, TBD This strand is intended primarily for teahers of heritage speakers of Spanish, but is open to all instrutors of Spanish language and ulture. The failitators/presenters will fous on having partiipants develop instrutional sequenes that link their level I and II heritage speakers ourses with Advaned Plaement (AP ) Spanish language and literature ourses and enable their students to develop the level of aademi language and literay skills needed to enroll and sueed in suh AP ourses and be both ollege and world ready. Common Corealigned Spanish heritage speakers instrutional units fousing on the AP themes of Contemporary Life, Global Challenges and Siene and Tehnology will be shared and modeled by their authors and will serve as the impetus for partiipants who will ollaborate to adapt and expand them for use in their own lassrooms. Partiipants will also engage in exploring instrutional strategies appropriate for teahing native and heritage speakers of Spanish as they aess literary and tehnial texts in ways that promote the aquisition of aademi language and literay skills in both Spanish and English. This strand will be onduted mainly in Spanish. B: Integrated Performane Assessments: Real-World Assessments for Real-World Readiness Failitators: Christine Lanphere, Teaher of Frenh and 2007 National Teaher of the Year and Niole Naditz, Teaher of Frenh, Google Certified Teaher and 2015 National Teaher of the Year This strand will provide hands-on experiene in designing Integrated Performane Assessments. These assessments, also known as IPAs, are onstruted based on students profiieny levels, tied to speifi learning targets, and provide meaningful assessment by using authenti douments to evaluate students reading and listening omprehension and then designing real-world writing and speaking tasks that are inspired and informed by the authenti douments they read and listened to. As a result, the assessments are also ulturally relevant. After partiipating in an IPA onduted in English so we an see first-hand how the assessment is strutured and delivered, we will learn the ritial design omponents of IPAs and examine how this style of assessment naturally ties into Common Core State Standards while building students 21st Century Skills before beginning to build our own IPAs for use in our lasses. Time will be devoted to designing instrution and pratie that will support students to be suessful with IPAs, and we will also explore relevant online tools that help teahers implement IPAs suessfully with their students. Partiipants will leave the strand with templates for the design of assessment piees in eah skill area of the IPA as well as sample Integrated Performane Assessment ativities reated by leaders in the field and by the partiipants in this strand. Partiipants will also have ongoing aess to online IPA design resoures and referene material on the Common Core State Standards, 21st Century Skills and instrutional tehnology through our program website. The strand is appropriate for teahers of all languages and grade levels and will be onduted in English. C: Italian Advaned Plaement Language and Culture: Course Content and Instrutional/Assessment Strategies that Effetively Prepare Learners to Sueed on the AP Exam Failitator: Bruna Petrara Boyle, Leturer at the University of Rhode Island and University of Johnson and Wales, President of the Rhode Island Teahers of Italian, Author of the Teaher s Guide for AP Italian, and College Board Consultant 4 This strand is an endorsed College Board institute for new and experiened Advaned Plaement (AP ) teahers of Italian language and ulture. The strand will fous on preparing partiipants to review, design and / or revise ourse syllabi that draw from the AP Curriulum Framework, World Readiness Standards for Learning Languages and authenti resoures. Speifially, partiipants will engage in exploring and developing instrutional strategies that build student ompetene in: interpersonal ( reply) and presentational (persuasive) writing and interpersonal (onversational) and presentational (ultural omparison) speaking setions of the AP Italian Language and Culture Exam. Partiipants will also have ample opportunity to network and exhange ideas regarding best praties for teahing Italian language and ulture and preparing students to sueed on the AP Exam and beyond.

5 26 th Annual Summer Seminar Program Strand Offerings D: Projet-Based Language-Learning: Preparing Students for Leadership in a Global Community Failitator: Don Doehla, National Board Certified Teaher of Frenh and Co-Diretor of the Berkeley World Language Projet, University of California Berkeley This strand will support teahers in developing the tools, ontent and skills that they need to failitate learning in a Projet-Based Language-Learning (PBLL) environment. PBLL engages students in an interdisiplinary inquiry of global themes as they work in ollaborative teams, developing ritial thinking (Depth of Knowledge) and leadership skills. Partiipants will reate a omplete PBLL-aligned unit whih addresses the Common Core Anhor as well as the College and Career Readiness Standards, the California World Language Standards, and ACTFL Global Readiness Standards. This strand is appropriate for teahers of all languages and ultures, and will be onduted in English. E: Teahing Japanese for Global Leadership Failitators: Yo Azama, Japanese Teaher and 2012 National Teaher of the Year/Outstanding Teaher of Ameria 2013 and Dr. Yoshiko Saito-Abbott, Professor of Japanese and Diretor of the Monterey Bay World Language Projet This strand will explore innovative instrutional strategies to engage 21st Century learners of Japanese language and ulture preparing for global leadership. Partiipants will develop ulture driven lesson plans and ativities using the Bakward Design model. Partiipants will develop Integrated Performane Assessment (IPA) tasks that promote ritial thinking and problem solving skills, initiative and self-diretion, and soial and ross-ultural skills. Effetive tehnology to enhane ommuniation will also be inorporated throughout the session. This strand will be onduted mainly in Japanese. F: Tehnology Tools and Curriulum Design for Teahing and Learning in the Common Core Era Failitator: Catherine Ousselin, Teaher of Frenh and Chair of AATF Commission on Tehnology This strand will fous on integrating Web-based tools and apps with tehniques for linguisti expression, literay development and assessment strategies that support the integration of the Common Core Literay Standards in the World Language lassroom. Partiipants will design and develop urriular units that integrate global ontent themes, instrutional strategies and 21st Century tehnologies that engage students in the learning proess and enable them to apply what they have learned in both aademi and professional settings. Through a series of presentations, failitated group work and guided researh, partiipants will ollaborate on identifying how to selet and evaluate appropriate tehnology tools that enhane diverse learning opportunities for students and promote more omplex and extended thinking so as to systematially move students into higher levels of aademi and ommuniative performane. G: STARTALK Leadership Development for Teahers of Critial Languages and Cultures Failitators: Hélène Chan, STEP Supervisor, Stanford Graduate Shool of Eduation, Elizabeth Mathett, National Board Certified Teaher of Spanish, Sally Mearns, Diretor, Stanford World Language Projet and Margaret Petersen, former Teaher of Japanese, Assistant Prinipal, San Franiso Unified This program is espeially designed to reate a adre of teaher-leaders from California and aross the nation who teah the STARTALK languages (Arabi, Chinese, Dari, Hindi, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Swahili, Turkish or Urdu) and prepare them to play leadership roles in their ommunities and publi shools, distrits, professional organizations and STARTALK programs. Priority will be awarded to eduators who have partiipated in other STARTALK teaher eduation programs and have experiened suess in implementing the STARTALK- Endorsed Teahing Priniples. The program will fous on leadership strategies that enable the partiipants to beome effetive learning oahes, mentors and innovators in our profession. In the proess, they will refine their own pedagogial skills and beome a part of a learning ommunity dediated to ontinuous improvement of the learning of ritial languages and ultures. Topis to be overed inlude: reative and innovative leadership, design thinking, moving from duty to passionate drive pratie, exploring of diverse leadership styles, advoay, oping with hange, oahing and mentoring, adult learning theory, onsensus building and group dynamis, and leading reatively onfident professional groups. Candidates aepted into this program will be supported with registration, lodging, meals and defrayed travel osts provided by a STARTALK grant. German Eduators: Stipends of $200 from ZfA are available to reimburse teahers of German language and ulture who suessfully partiipate in Strands: B, D, or F. Italian Eduators: A potential stipend might be available to support your partiipation in Strand C: Italian Advaned Plaement Language and Culture.
