3 Sexual exploitation of children linked to travel and tourism is a global crime. Tourism is NOT the cause but many offenders travel and use the service of the industry to commit the crime. Tourism US TIP 2013 Report: For years, Japan has served as a source of demand for child sex tourism. Japanese men have traveled to and engaged in the commercial sexual exploitation of children in other Asian countries particularly Thailand, Indonesia, Cambodia, the Philippines, and, to a lesser extent, Mongolia. During the reporting period, one person was convicted under a Japanese law that allows nationals to be tried in Japanese courts for engaging in sex with minors or producing child pornography overseas. 6 The Code of Conduct for the Protection of Children from Sexual Exploitation in Travel and Tourism A recent assessment by UNICEF (2012) stated : The Code has come a long way in a short period of time. The number of signatories has grown dramatically. The Code is known internationally. It has received international awards. It now faces some growing pains. If The Code is to continue being an effective tool to engage the private-sector in the prevention of sexual exploitation of children in the travel and tourism industry, it needs to address these challenges head-on. WEAK consistency in implementation and reporting; WEAK of clear organizational structure and of organizational workplan; Insufficiently developed of own identity and brand and benefits for membership; WEAK of focused reach out to operators likely to be at high risk for sexual exploitation of children (SEC); Tight financial resources, dependency on one major donor, insufficient fundraising activities. The report recommends, among other tings, better use of technology to overcome these challenges.

7 The Code of Conduct for the Protection of Children from Sexual Exploitation in Travel and Tourism The Code is an internationally recognized initiative with the mission to provide awareness, tools and support to the tourism industry to prevent the sexual exploitation of children. Focus on integrating child protection into the industry via its 6 criteria.

8 Six Criteria of The Code To be implemented by all members of The Code 1. To establish a policy and procedures against sexual exploitation of children; 2. To train employees in children s rights, the prevention of sexual exploitation and how to report suspected cases; 3. To include a clause in contracts throughout the value chain stating a common repudiation and zero tolerance policy of sexual exploitation of children;

To provide information to travelers on children s rights, the prevention of sexual exploitation of children and how to report suspected cases; 5. To support, collaborate and engage stakeholders in the prevention of sexual exploitation of children; 6. To report annually on their implementation of Code related activities.

25 Child Safe Tourism: Travelers Want It! A total of 268 tourists from across the globe, representing different traveler types, ages, genders and socio-cultural backgrounds, completed surveys and interviews. The majority of tourists (76%) were aware of the issue of child exploitation in connection with tourism in South East Asia; A large proportion of tourists believed the tourism industry and/or governments in the region should take more action to tackle child exploitation, including by educating tourists on how they could help; Credit to World Vision s Child Safe Tourism Report 25
