3 Project Scope $4.3 million ARRA funded project Initial ARRA work will address only critical areas ARRA work will include: Rehabilitation of floating slab track structure Water mitigation for tunnel structure from Harvard to Alewife Rail replacement in selective areas Third rail replacement in selective areas $35 million Capital Improvement Project (CIP) scheduled from FY Subsequent Capital Improvement Project work will address remaining areas of the infrastructure in need of repair 3 Leading the Nation in Transportation Excellence

4 Project background Red Line tunnel from Harvard to Alewife was open for service in March of 1985 Floating Slab track was built to reduce vibration impacts to abutters from train operations. It is the gold standard for vibration mitigation. Track construction Floating Slabs are 9 x5 concrete blocks sitting on rubber disks which sits on the tunnel floor 4

5 Project background Due to limitations in funding, site access, windows of work, and type of work needed to correct infrastructure issues, a state of good repair has been difficult to maintain. Nearest point of access is 2.2 miles from Harvard Station near the Longfellow Bridge in Cambridge All material must be brought in by rail 5

6 Project background Basis for Weekend Work Track concrete work will require 24 hours of curing time to reach adequate strength to safely run service Many locations for water mitigation will require 6 to 8 hours of dedicated time Welding of new rail and installation of rail require large blocks of time 6

7 Project background Basis for Weekend Work Labor cost reduction through Bus Picks Upcoming MBTA projects scheduled for work requiring shutdowns of train service will place a higher demand for busses Red Line - Columbia Junction Red Line - Longfellow Bridge Rehabilitation Blue Line - Orient Heights Station 7

8 Project Details Track Concrete Work Track concrete work involves removing and replacing secondary pour failures and replacement of failed primary precast floating slabs. The ARRA project will address 83 areas which are critical 13 areas involve primary precast slab and secondary pour replacement 8

13 Project Details Track Concrete Work The Capital Improvement Project will continue work initiated under the ARRA project Work will consist of secondary areas affected that are not critical Work will help bring the tunnel section from Harvard to Alewife to a state of good repair 13

14 Project Details Water Mitigation Water mitigation will be performed through a MBTA Design and Construction project currently out to bid Water leaks affecting the track structure will be mitigated over 2 of the 17 weekend shutdowns of service Due to the nature of water leak repair it is expected additional efforts will be required to chase the leaks 14

16 Project Details Rail/Third Rail Replacement Approximately 6000 ft. of rail will be replaced under the ARRA project Rail will be welded and installed Approximately 2300 ft. of third rail will be replaced under the ARRA project Third rail replacement will be targeted for those areas that have impacted service 16

19 Project Details Rail/Third Rail Replacement The Capital Improvement Project will continue work initiated under the ARRA project Rail replacement will target all curved rail sections and selected tangents All third rail between Harvard and Alewife will be replaced 19

20 Project Schedule Initial ARRA work Approximately 17 consecutive weekend shutdowns of rail service Beginning Nov. 5, and ending approximately March 4, 2012 Train service will be replaced by shuttle bus service over these weekends There will be no weekend shutdowns over Christmas and New Years 20

21 Project Schedule CIP work Work will continue from 2012 to 2016 Work will be done through a combination of nightly work and weekend shutdowns of rail service Schedule will be determined to minimize impact on the riding public Train service will be replaced by shuttle bus service over these weekends 21

22 Red Line Alternative Service Plan Floating Slab Project 22

23 Overview Shuttle Bus service will run between Harvard Station and Alewife Station making station stops at Porter Station and Davis Station. MBTA Personnel will be on hand to assist customers with transferring from Red Line train service to shuttle bus service and from shuttle bus service to Red Line train service.

24 Overview continued. Christmas and New Years weekends, normal Red Line service will run. Shuttle bus service will run at an increased intervals compared to normal Red Line weekend service. Shuttle bus stops will be manned with Bus Operations personnel for any customer assistance needed. 24

Reverse route for inbound trip to Harvard Station, stopping on Holland St for Davis Sq Station and then on to Harvard. 25

26 Station Improvements Maintenance work will be performed in our stations during these shutdowns while they are closed, which normally could not be completed due to customer traffic. Some examples would be painting, electrical, carpentry and masonry work. System security work will be performed to install new CCTV cameras, monitors and station door security. 26

27 Station Improvements cont. The Porter Square Redundant Elevator project will perform work which will accelerate the finishing date. Track improvements, not included in the Floating Slab project will be performed. 27
