3 Continuing Education Program Alumni Weekend! Presented by the Classes of 1976, 1981, ad 1986 ANTIBIOTICS IN DENTISTRY DOES PRESCRIBING PUT YOU AT RISK? This presentation will discuss appropriate use of antibiotics for prevention of late joint infections and infectious endocarditis and the potential consequences of inappropriate use including acute reactions and long-term repercussions. Howard Cowen, D.D.S., M.S., D.A.B.C.S.D., is a Professor and Director of the Geriatric and Special Needs Programs at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. Dr. Cowen received his D.D.S. degree in 1976 and his M.S. in 1996 from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Special Care Dentistry and Director of the Geriatric and Special Needs Program and Graduate Certificate Program. His primary research interests include epidemiology of oral diseases in the elderly, etiology of tooth loss, osteoporosis and fluoride intake and the oral health of nursing home residents. PERI-IMPLANTITIS THE NEWEST PERIODONTAL DISEASE This presentation will address the diagnosis and treatment of peri-implant diseases, including perio-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis. Etiologic and risk factors will be discussed as well as disease prevention and therapeutic options for managing disease. A case-based approach will be used to illustrate these points. Georgia Johnson, D.D.S., M.S., is a Professor in the Department of Periodontics at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. Dr. Johnson received her D.D.S. degree in 1981 and her M.S. degree in Periodontics in 1983 from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. She teaches in the predoctoral and postdoctoral dental programs and practices periodontics in the faculty practice. Dr. Johnson is an Examiner for the American Board of Periodontology (ABP) and has served as Co-Chair ( ) and Director ( ) of the ABP. She is currently a Periodontal Consultant for the American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation. Dr. Johnson is an author on over 80 publications in peer reviewed journals. THE IMPACT OF THE CHANGING HEALTH CARE SYSTEMS ON YOUR DELIVERY OF DENTAL CARE This program will discuss the significant changes that are occurring in the medical and dental care delivery systems and how they could directly affect the clinical practice of dentistry. Peter Damiano, D.D.S., M.P.H., is the Director of the University of Iowa Public Policy Center and a Professor in the Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. Dr. Damiano received his D.D.S. degree in 1986 from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and his M.P.H. from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1990 while participating in the Robert Wood Johnson Dental Health Services Research Scholars Program. He is a health services researcher studying access to and quality of primary care services including dental care. Dr. Damiano is the author of over 100 journal articles and research monographs and has been principal investigator on over 50 funded research studies. He continues to be clinically active, providing dental services to patients in faculty practice. At the completion of the entire program, participants should be able to: Understand when to prescribe antibiotics for prevention of late joint infections and infective endocarditis, Understand potential acute problems that occur from antibiotics, Understand the problem of antibiotic resistance, Describe diagnostic features of peri-implant diseases, Describe etiologic factors for peri-implantitis, Describe current therapeutic trends for management of peri-implantitis, Understand the changes occurring in the health care delivery system, including the development of accountable care organization and how they are incorporating dental care, and Understand how these delivery system changes could directly affect the expectations for the way dental care is delivered and evaluated. ADVANCE REGISTRATION: Because of the anticipated demand for football tickets and lodging, you are urged to register as early as possible. For registrations charged to your credit card, the refund will be credited to your account. If insufficient enrollment necessitates canceling a course, all fees will be refunded. Refunds will not be granted for cancellations received after the course begins. CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDIT/RECORD KEEPING: CEU verification will be provided (by following the program) only for those individuals completing/submitting a CEU card at the completion of the program. Credit will be appropriately adjusted for those individuals who do not attend the entire program. All attendees are encouraged to submit the CEU card which will generate a letter documenting attendance at the program. REUNION ACTIVITIES: A special invitation is extended to members of reunion classes. Efforts will be made to help class members sit together during the dinner and football game. Members of these classes should register early and BE SURE TO SPECIFY CLASS YEAR ON APPLICATION. All of our group planning depends on knowing who will attend from each class! If you do not state your year, seating with your class cannot be guaranteed. DINNER: The Alumni Weekend will feature a no-host social hour and dinner at the Radisson Hotel (formerly the Holiday Inn and Conference Center) at I-80 and First Avenue (Exit 242), Coralville. Reunion classes and honorees will be seated at specially-marked tables. Presentations will be made to the honored Dental Alumnus of the Year, Distinguished Educator of the Year, Service Recognition, and the Alumni Leadership Awardees. The cost is $60 per person. FOOTBALL TICKETS: Tickets for Iowa vs. North Dakota State on 9/17 ($65 each plus a $1 per ticket handling fee) are available on a very limited basis (limit 2 tickets per registration). Ticket requests will be filled until supply is exhausted. To order tickets, you must register and prepay for the continuing education program. Tickets will not be mailed. Payment for tickets cannot be refunded except when ticket supply is exhausted during the pre-registration period. Tickets cannot be transferred with a registration to another course. PARKING: Parking is included with the course registration. HOUSING: A block of rooms has been reserved for Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings (September 15, 16, and 17) at the local hotels listed below. Reservations must be made by August 16, It is the responsibility of registrants to reserve their own lodging. When making your reservations, please indicate that you are attending the College of Dentistry s Dental Alumni Weekend. In order to serve as many alumni as possible, reservations will be limited to one room per person.
