Ways to Record Your Lecture We have identified 9 different ways of doing this: Panopto: Last Year s Recording P Useful if you covered the same material O You cannot use unless you have explicit permission from the performance rights holder. This may be you! Panopto: University Managed Desktop P Good option if you are already on campus! Have you got a mic or webcam already installed? Panopto: University Managed Laptop P Likely to have the appropriate hardware! Read the instructions for installing the client software carefully! Do you have local admin rights on the laptop? Panopto: Lecture Theatre P Good option if you are already on campus PVery simple option but not necessarily available to all PDo you need to use a visualiser? Panopto: Personal Computer P More simple option in terms of installing the Panopto client software! Are you recording to the correct moodle-linked folder? PowerPoint: Add an Audio Layer and Uploading to Moodle! Have you got the correct hardware for recording audio?! Have you provided instructions to students for how to play the audio component of the slide? Voice Recording: Mobile Phone or Common Software!.mp3 or.aac is a good format for Moodle! Transferring the file into Moodle may vary depending on what recording device you use Video: ipad or Similar Tablet! Recording must be less than 2GB and in mp4 format for upload to Moodle.! You might consider splitting the lecture or compressing the final file Video: Common Laptop Software P Macs and Windows both have software for creating video podcasts.! Recordings must be less than 2GB for upload to Moodle! Can you chunk your lecture? 3
What Will Be Recorded? Different methods of lecture capture will allow you to record different aspects of a lecture Lecture Slides PowerPoint Slides: these will be indexed and become searchable Computer Screen anything shown on your computer screen e.g. your lecture slides and any software you use to give demos or show a website Video video of the person giving the lecture, taken from a camera Visualizer a video feed from the visualizers in lecture theatres, useful if you need to show an object or hand write equations Lecture Slides Computer Screen Audio Video Visualizer Panopto: PC or Laptop P P P Panopto: Lecture Theatres P P P P (Optional) P (Large Lecture Theatres) PowerPoint: Audio Layer P O P O O Voice Recording Mobile/Tablet Voice Recording: Audacity Video Recording Mobile/Tablet Video Recording: Camtasia Video Recording: Quicktime (OS X) O O P O O O O P O O O O P P O O (Via Computer Screen) O (Via Computer Screen) P P P (Optional) P P O O O P O Think about the above methods and carefully choose the one which will work for you. Below are step by step instructions from creation to publish for each. Bear in mind that some methods, especially if you are using your own hardware, may deviate slightly from the step by step instructions below. Please contact ISS Service Desk on or iss@lancaster.ac.uk who will try and contact a member of the elearning team for further support if required. 4
What Hardware Will I Need? You ll need a device capable of capturing audio for all of these methods. If you are recording from your Desktop or Laptop, you will need one of the following: A Plugin Microphone A Webcam A Headset A Laptop Webcam If you already use Skype or Webex you re likely to have a device that will work! Recording from a Laptop? Most laptops have a built in webcam at the top of the screen. Even those that don t tend to have built in microphones. Where to get a microphone Don t have a microphone? Ask your colleagues if you can borrow one, talk to your department IT representative etc. Some webcams will be plug and play meaning you don t need to have admin rights on the PC to make it work. Department IT representatives or faculty teams will be able to help here if you need it. Still don t have a microphone? Consider using your smartphone or tablet to create a recording. 5
Tips for Recording a Lecture Record a short test first!! (30 seconds or less) to check that everything is working as expected Do you need to record your full lecture? Can you record a summary instead? If your lecture had contained audience interaction you can use Moodle features such as the Choice activity, Quizzes and Discussion forums to approximate this Do you want to record the entire lecture in one go? It s easier to record and watch if you record your lecture in chunks i.e. 15/20 minutes at a time Do you have a quiet place to work? Try to find somewhere with minimal background noise. Put a sign on your office door to let people know you re recording and they shouldn t disturb you. Do your office lights turn off automatically? Make sure to move periodically so they don t turn off midway through your lecture especially if you re recording video! 6
Section 1 - Panopto Last Year s Recording - Reuse a Lecture Recording from Last Year If your week 10 lecture was recorded last year and can be appropriately used again this year you can make a copy and provide access to current year students via Moodle. What can be appropriately reused? Lectures where the content is still relevant AND Lectures where the recording is of yourself OR You have explicit permission from the member of staff who made the recording to reuse it this year To re-use a Panopto recording from a previous year in another Moodle course, a copy of the recording must be made before moving it to the required folder and then published in Moodle.
