WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION Overview Learn how to record, edit and share your demonstrations and presentations online using Camtasia Studio. This application records your computer screen, capturing your cursor movements, menu selections, typing, and pop-up windows. It can even record PowerPoint presentations with audio! Come participate in this hands-on workshop to show you how to teach your students using screen recordings. Prerequisites Individuals taking this workshop should have basic computer skills, knowledge of the Web, basic Web browser skills, and the ability to effectively work in the Windows OS environment. Participants must have a SacLink account. Objectives Participants attending this workshop will: Record a screen with Camtasia Recorder. Learn how to add content to a Camtasia Studio project. Edit and Produce a video with Camtasia Studio. INTRODUCTION With Camtasia Studio, you can create professional-looking screen videos. Record your computer screen, capturing your cursor movements, menu selections, typing, and pop-up windows. Screen videos can be enhanced in Camtasia in a variety of ways audio clips can be added (during the recording or after), callouts can be created in the video, and objects can be highlighted. Your completed video can be output to several different, popular file formats, such as AVI, Flash, QuickTime and RealMedia. Camtasia Studio produces professional-looking screen recordings that you can then share with students, colleagues, or even an audience on the Web. Academic Technology and Creative Services: Summer 2014 Camtasia Studio: Creating Screen Videos 1

WHY USE CAMTASIA STUDIO? Create video tutorials for your students to teach them how to use computer software. Record a screen video to share during a presentation. Narrate a PowerPoint presentation to present to an audience when you cannot be there in person. WHERE CAN I GET CAMTASIA STUDIO? Sacramento State has a limited campus-wide license for Camtasia Studio. There are three methods for you to get or use the software: 1. Free use a. Submit a Help Ticket to request the software for a University owned machine (desktop or laptop). Visit the Software for University Owned Machines webpage for a complete list of software available for request. b. The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) has the software installed on its computers and is available for your use in LIB c. The Technology Learning Center (ARC 3012) has the software installed on the computers in the project rooms. Contact the staff for assistance. 2. An educational copy can be purchased at The Hornet Bookstore. 3. You can purchase it online from the vendor (http://www.techsmith.com), or download a free 30-day trial version from the vendor s website. HOW TO USE CAMTASIA STUDIO The process of using Camtasia Studio falls into three general categories: step 1. Record your video, including planning your video project and recording your computer screen with Camtasia Recorder. step 2. Edit your video, which consists of importing media into your project, adding title clips, recording voice narration, adding callouts or transitions and captions. step 3. Produce your video into its final format and if needed, make it available for others to view. Academic Technology and Creative Services: Summer 2014 Camtasia Studio: Creating Screen Videos 2

RECORD Plan Your Video Project Below are some helpful recommendations when planning your video project. TIP: Keep Recording Project Files Organized Create a new folder for each video project and place all media (audio, images, script) that you create or use for the project, into the folder. Keeping all video project files in a single folder will make it easier to locate files later and to copy to an external disk to backup or share. STORYBOARD Before you start to record your project, it is recommended that you develop a storyboard, which is the foundation for your project. At a minimum, your storyboard should include: Objectives Narration script for audio and accessible text version Screen and task descriptions Existing images and video Animation and mouse movement. DIVIDE MAIN TOPIC INTO SEGMENTS If possible, divide your main topic into smaller segments, and record each segment separately. It is easier to re-record a segment than to re-record an entire topic. CREATE YOUR OWN RECORDING STANDARDS Decide on a standard set of Camtasia Recorder options and document the options you choose. For example, will you: Highlight the cursor when recording? Highlight cursor clicks and what color will they be? Record keyboard sounds? Include audio in your recording? Record the entire screen or just a portion? Academic Technology and Creative Services: Summer 2014 Camtasia Studio: Creating Screen Videos 3

Record Your Computer Screen RECOMMENDED SETTINGS DO NOT record the full screen unless you have no other option. It is best to select an area of the screen to record or use a preset dimension and adjust your application to fit that dimension. o After you start Camtasia Recorder, select the area of the screen to record. The Full Screen option will open by default, but you can resize the selection window by clicking and dragging one of the side or corner boxes of the green dashed line window. Alternatively, you can click Custom and select from one of the preset dimensions. Save Recordings as AVI o In Camtasia Recorder, go to the Tools menu and select Options. On the General tab under Saving, select AVI from the Record to drop down menu. Recordings will be saved in the AVI format. Click OK to save your changes. Camtasia Recorder remembers the last saved settings the next time you want to record the screen. TIP: Video Formats The AVI video format is one of the most common video formats, but results in very large files. A video saved in this format can be played in most video players, such as Real Player, Quick Time, and Windows Media Player. If you do not want to edit your video, you can use Camtasia Recorder to record and save your video to AVI format and it will be usable after you save the recording. SELECT MOUSE EFFECTS To customize the recording settings for Camtasia Recorder, follow these steps: step 1. Start Camtasia Recorder. Academic Technology and Creative Services: Summer 2014 Camtasia Studio: Creating Screen Videos 4

step 2. To set the sounds to capture, click the Effects menu and select Use mouse click sounds. step 3. A checkmark will display to the left of option, indicating the option is turned on. To turn off sounds, click on Use mouse click sounds again, option will be unchecked. SELECT CURSOR EFFECTS By default, the cursor recording option Make cursor effects editable in Camtasia Studio is checked. This means the cursor will be recorded and you will be able to make changes to the cursor, such as hiding the cursor, adding a highlight effect, etc. during the editing process. If you prefer to set the cursor effects before recording follow the steps below: step 1. To set the cursor options, click Effects menu then select Options. step 2. Click the Cursor tab. Uncheck the box next to Make cursor effects editable in Camtasia Studio. step 3. Cursor highlighting options will display. step 4. Make your selections from the Effects Options window. step 5. Click OK to save your options. Academic Technology and Creative Services: Summer 2014 Camtasia Studio: Creating Screen Videos 5

step 6. Now select which cursor effect you would like to use. Click the Effects menu, and select Cursor. step 7. Select from the options: Hide Cursor, Show Cursor, Highlight Clicks, Highlight Cursor, Highlight Cursor & Click. A checkmark will display to the left of selection. SELECT FILE RECORDING FORMAT AND INPUT DEVICE(S) By default, recordings created with Camtasia Studio are set to save in a.camrec format. This format can usually only be opened and edited in Camtasia Studio. This format limits the options for opening and editing recordings. Thus, we recommend that you change the recording file format to AVI instead. This way, in the event you were to share recording files, they can be easily opened in video players such as VLC Player, RealPlayer, QuickTime and Windows Media Player. step 1. From the Camtasia Recorder, click the Tools menu, and select Options. step 2. On the General tab under Saving, select AVI from the Record to drop down menu. Academic Technology and Creative Services: Summer 2014 Camtasia Studio: Creating Screen Videos 6

step 3. If you want to record audio, click the Inputs tab. step 4. Choose your audio recording device and source from the list of devices available for your computer under the Audio section.adjust the input level of the recording device as needed. step 5. Under the Webcam section, select the camera you will be using from the Webcam device drop down menu. step 6. Click OK to save your options. Camtasia Recorder saves your settings to be used for all future recordings, until you change them. GENERAL SCREEN RECORDING Adjust the application or browser window before you record. Turn off unnecessary window elements, such as added toolbars in the browser, and close other applications that are not needed. Optimize the size of the application or browser window if only recording a portion of the screen. Set your own recording standards for Camtasia Recorder (see Recommend Settings in the previous section). Set the volume of the microphone for recording, if recording audio. Don t stop recording just because you made a mistake. Pause for a few seconds and then begin again where the mistake was made. You can easily cut the mistake from your video once you complete your recoding. Turn down your phone volume or turn it off. Place a note on your door that you are recording and are not to be disturbed. Your microphone may pick up any sounds or noises in your vicinity. Practice your presentation to remove all unnecessary or extra mouse movements. Academic Technology and Creative Services: Summer 2014 Camtasia Studio: Creating Screen Videos 7

SELECT AREA TO RECORD step 1. In Camtasia Recorder, select one of the options under Select Area to choose what area of the screen you want to record. After you stop the recording, Camtasia plays your recorded video in the Preview window and you have the option to Save and Edit, Produce or Delete. We recommend you click the Save and Edit button. You will be prompted to give your file a name and select a location to save. Once the file is saved, the Camtasia Studio editor window will open where you can begin editing your recording. F10 If you prefer to only Save the file and edit later, click the drop down arrow below the Save and Edit option. Select Save As and provide a name and location for the recording file. The first step in editing your video is to start Camtasia Studio. If you just recorded your video using Camtasia Recorder, you can immediately begin editing your video and/or project in Camtasia Studio. step 2. When Camtasia starts the Welcome window appears. Academic Technology and Creative Services: Summer 2014 Camtasia Studio: Creating Screen Videos 11

TIP: A great way to quickly learn how to use Camtasia Studio is to watch the videos available in the Free Training section of the Welcome window. step 3. You can select an option from the Welcome window, such as a link to a recently opened project, a video tutorial, or the Import Media button to begin a new project. If you do not want any of these options, simply click the Close button. step 4. If you want to open an existing project you worked with previously, click the File menu and select Open Project. step 5. To start a new project, you must first begin importing media. Refer to the Import Multimedia section under the next area, Add Content to Your Project. Add Content to Your Project IMPORT MULTIMEDIA This tool is used to add audio, image, and video files to your project so they can be included in your final video. step 1. In Camtasia Studio Editor, click the Clip Bin tab step 2. Click the Import media option step 3. In the Open window, locate the files you want to import from your computer, select the file name(s) and click Open. Your files now appear in the Clip Bin, as shown below. Academic Technology and Creative Services: Summer 2014 Camtasia Studio: Creating Screen Videos 12

step 4. Repeat the above steps to import additional media from another location on your computer. TIP: Remember to place all your media for a single project into the project folder you created earlier. Camtasia remembers the location of the files that you import, so they should not be moved after you import them into Camtasia. TITLE CLIPS Title clips can be added to your project to separate segments in your storyboard, such as images or video. These clips act like title slides in a PowerPoint slideshow. step 1. Select the Library tab from the Camtasia Editor. step 2. Scroll down the list of items and open the Title Clips folder. Select one of the available title clip options step 3. In the Title Clips window type a name for the title slide, choose a background image or color, choose your text color, and add the text to your title slide, as shown below. step 4. Click OK when you are finished creating your title slide. Academic Technology and Creative Services: Summer 2014 Camtasia Studio: Creating Screen Videos 13

DRAG CONTENT TO THE TIMELINE OR STORYBOARD In order to add the content you imported or created above, you need to drag the items from the Clip Bin to the Timeline or Storyboard at the bottom of the Camtasia Studio screen. step 1. From the Clip Bin drag your content down to the Storyboard/Timeline. step 2. After the drag your first content an image or video to the Storyboard/Timeline the Project Settings window appears. Here you must choose the dimensions of your video. Choose the Recording Dimensions option at the bottom of the list. You can always change the dimensions of your video when you produce the final video. Academic Technology and Creative Services: Summer 2014 Camtasia Studio: Creating Screen Videos 14

step 3. Continue dragging your content from the Clip Bin to your Storyboard/Timeline, placing the content where you want it. If you misplace the content on the Storyboard/Timeline, you can click and drag a content item to the left or right to move it to another location. Academic Technology and Creative Services: Summer 2014 Camtasia Studio: Creating Screen Videos 15

Edit Your Project TIP: Remember, when you make changes to any video in your Timeline, your original video from the Clip Bin is NOT changed, Camtasia only saves the editing adjustments on the Timeline in the project. If you make mistakes, you can start over by deleting the video segment from the Timeline, and then dragging your video again from the Clip Bin to the Timeline. EDITING VIDEO CLIPS step 1. To edit the length of a video clip: Move the mouse pointer to either end of the clip in the Timeline, and then click and drag it to the left. step 2. To cut a portion of a video from either end: a. Click your mouse pointer on the Timeline and drag it from that point to the end. This highlights the video portion. b. Click the Cut Selection icon (scissors ) above the Timeline to cut the portion of video that you highlighted. Academic Technology and Creative Services: Summer 2014 Camtasia Studio: Creating Screen Videos 16

step 3. To split a video into two segments to insert content between the segments: a. Click your mouse pointer on the Timeline at the point you want to make the split. b. Click the Split icon ( ) above the Timeline to split the video segment into two pieces. You will now see a vertical line between the two video pieces. c. Now you can click and drag another content item (image or video) from the Clip Bin to the Timeline, or insert a Title Clip or Transition between the two video segments. EDITING IMAGE DURATION step 1. To edit the duration of an image: Right-click on the image in the Timeline and select Image Duration from the menu. step 2. Type your new duration into the window that appears. Academic Technology and Creative Services: Summer 2014 Camtasia Studio: Creating Screen Videos 17

Academic Technology and Creative Services: Summer 2014 Camtasia Studio: Creating Screen Videos 19

step 10. Select your remaining options on the next few screens and then click Finish. Your final video is now rendered (created). step 11. Click Finish to close the Production Wizard. step 12. If the final video is not exactly what you want, edit your project again or select Product Video As and select different output options. Put Your Media Online SAC STATE MEDIA SERVER step 1. If you do not already have an account on the campus media server, complete the Media Server Request Form (http://www.csus.edu/atcs/tools/mediaserver/request_form.stm). step 2. Follow the steps to upload your video file(s) to the media server on the Media Server Uploading Files webpage (http://www.csus.edu/atcs/tools/mediaserver/uploading_files.stm). step 3. Follow the steps to add a link to your webpage on the Media Server Creating Links in a Webpage page (http://www.csus.edu/atcs/tools/mediaserver/creating_links_webpage.stm). Your sample URL may look like the following: where videodemo = your assigned folder on the media server, and sample.rm = the name of your video file. WEBSITE TIP: If you place your final media file on your website or in SacCT, the videos MUST be downloaded first before they can be played by the user visiting your site. If your video is large, this can take quite a while to download, which can discourage visitors from viewing your video. We recommend creating your final video in the RealMedia format and placing it on the Sac State media server (see previous section).
