1 PHOENIX OPTIX PASSIVE OPTICAL LAN CABLING SYSTEM Connectivity Solutions to Create Highly Reliable, Cost-Saving Point-to-Multipoint POLs
2 PASSIVE OPTICAL LANS End-to-End Connectivity Solutions END-TO-END CONNECTIVITY FROM ONE SOURCE Cassette-based splitters Cable assemblies Distribution hardware EASY TO INSTALL Seamless integration of splitters into your network environment Pre-terminated cables for fast plug-and-play simplicity and no onsite terminations FLEXIBLE Longer transmission distances Bend-insensitive single-mode fiber for easier routing and installation Support for MTP, LC, and SC interfaces RELIABLE Helps eliminate need for intermediate wiring closets and associated LAN electronics Simplified Architecture for Increased Reliability and Lower Power Passive optical local area networks (POLs) can simplify your LAN. By leveraging the low losses and high bandwidth of single-mode fibers, POLs significantly reduce the cabling infrastructure and reduce the number of active devices in the network. Based on single-mode fibers and passive splitters, a POL can serve up to 7000 users over a 20 km radius with a single LAN aggregation switch. The POL s point-to-multipoint architecture can reduce the electronics required in the LAN, leading to significant savings in power, cooling, and space requirements. Passive optical splitters enable a single optical fiber to serve multiple users. Intermediate wiring closets and workgroup switches can be eliminated. Passive fiber distribution hubs replace active workgroup switches. A single fiber can deliver signals to a local user area, where a passive fiber splitter divides the signal for delivery to individual users. This can reduce the number of cables by a factor of 32:1. Save Money, Space, and Power POLs can offer savings up to 50% in capital expenses and 75% in operating expenses over a traditional LAN. Because POLs simplify the network infrastructure, they can save you money in several ways: Reduced electronics. Active network electronics are only required at each end, in the optical line terminal (OLT) and the optical network terminal (ONT). Everything in between is based on passive distribution hubs and splitters. Without the need for intermediate switches, wiring closets can either be eliminated or significantly reduced in size. EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO DEPLOY END-TO-END SOLUTIONS Splitters Enclosures and Splice Trays Adapters Cassettes Zone Boxes Faceplates Backbone and Patch Cable Assemblies PAGE 2
3 Lower power consumption. The reduction in electronics translates into lower power use. Simplified cabling infrastructure. A single fiber can support up to 32 users after the splitter. Not only does this significantly reduce the number of cables that need to be run, the bend-insensitive single-mode fibers are small and easily routed. Easier management. Passive optical LANs are easier to manage. The simplified architecture means moves, adds, and changes are easier to accomplish. Triple Play of Fiber to the Desk A single fiber can deliver voice, video, and data to the user. The ONT performs the opto-electronic conversion and demultiplexes the voice, video, and data signals for connection to the appropriate user device. There is no need for separate voice, video, and data cables before reaching the desktop. The POL can handle both digital and RF video, so that separate coaxial cables are not needed. BUILDING 1 BUILDING 2 Reliability for Today... A POL is based on carrier-class PON technology with years of time-tested reliability. A fiber-based POL can give five- 9s reliability equivalent to 5 minutes of unscheduled downtime a year. Because the system between ONT and OLT is built with reliable passive optical components, there are fewer points of failure.... Capacity for Future Networks While copper-based cabling systems have a useful lifetime of 10 to 15 years, a Phoenix Optix POL system has the bandwidth today to accommodate LAN upgrades well beyond the expected useful life of copper cable. While typical POLs today operate at 2.5 Gb/s downstream and 1.5 Gb/s upstream, the single-mode fibers have the capacity to handle much higher data rates. When you need higher speeds, changes are required only at each end without changing the cabling system. And since there are no workgroup switches, no changes are needed in intermediate electronics.
