TCTC Cabling Specifications Purpose: To provide a standard specification that will be used for all Tri County Technical College (TCTC) facilities requiring structured cabling installation. Product specifications, general design considerations, and installation guidelines are provided in this written document. The successful contractor shall meet or exceed all requirements for the cabling system described in this document. This document defines the cabling system and subsystem components to include cable, termination hardware, supporting hardware, and miscellany that TCTC will furnish to install a complete telecommunications system supporting voice and data. The intent of this document is to provide all pertinent information to allow the contractor to bid the materials, labor, supervision, tooling, and miscellaneous mounting hardware and consumables to install a complete system. However, it is the responsibility of the contractor to identify any and all items required for a complete system not identified in this specification. Requirements: 1. Must be a current member in good standing of the Corning Cable Systems' Extended Warranty Program (EWP). Each member company must meet Corning s stringent requirements for technical experience, financial strength, and proven dedication to quality. EWP installers must demonstrate ongoing commitment to extensive factory training and are required to update training at least once every two years. The Corning Cable Systems LANscape Extended Warranty covers each product component as well as the total performance of the Corning Cable Systems cabling system. Corning Cable Systems guarantees to repair or replace defective products free of charge after installation. Prior to installing any cable on the site, the contractor must submit copies of the training certificates for the installation crew to the TCTC Project Manager. 2. Must have a BICSI certified Registered/Certified Communications Distribution Designer ( RCDD) review the drawings and meet with TCTC representatives from Facilities and Information Technology (IT) to discuss the project and to ensure that a structured cabling system is installed that provides a comprehensive telecommunications infrastructure. 3 As Built Drawings: The contractor shall provide detailed as built drawings to TCTC upon completion of the project. This shall include all pathways and cabling documentation. Electronic form is preferred. Testing and Documentation: All cables and termination hardware shall be 100% tested for defects in installation and to verify cable performance under installed conditions. The contractor prior to system acceptance shall verify all conductors of each installed cable useable. Any defect in the cabling system installation including but not limited to cable, connectors, feed through couplers, patch panels, and connector blocks shall be repaired or replaced in order to ensure 100% useable conductors in all cables installed. All cables shall be tested in accordance with this document and best industry practices. If any of these are in conflict, the Contractor shall be responsible to bring any discrepancies to the attention of the project manager for clarification and/or resolution. Labeling of Cables: Each cable pulled shall be labeled 6 inches behind the termination point on both ends of each cable with a self laminating label wrapped around the cable. The label shall reference the patch panel port and the endpoint location. The format of label is to be approved by TCTC before proceeding. Example label: 1A A10 on the top of the faceplate, 1A A11 at the bottom of the faceplate, 1A A10 on both ends of the cable, and 1A A11 on both ends of the cable. Closets will be 1A, 1B, 2A, 2B, etc Example: Wireless AP ceiling label: See the example below of a ceiling grid label for the surface mount box above the ceiling. TCTC Cabling Specifications Page 3

Wireless AP surface mount box label: See the example below of a surface mount box for a wireless AP connection in the ceiling above it. Color coding jacks with bezels: Data = Blue, Phones = Red, Printers = Yellow, Green = AP s, Orange = Cameras, Gray = Cash registers, White = HVAC, Brown = Card Access, Purple = Projectors, Ivory = CIT dept, Black = LCD displays TCTC Cabling Specifications Page 4

Faceplate labels: Each jack of the faceplate shall be labeled according to TCTC approval. Blue jacks are designated as data and white jacks are designated as voice. The patch panel in the closets will have blue data jacks in one patch panel and white voice jacks in the other patch panel. They are not to be terminated in the same patch panel. Example of Copper Faceplate Label and Data Patch Panel: Cable Trays: It is important that the path for the cable tray is clear of obstructions, such as HVAC ducts, large pipes and structural beams within the building. Where fire or smoke barriers are penetrated by the cable tray, they shall be fire stopped to maintain the rating of the barrier. Alternatively, conduit sleeves may be used through the penetrations. They must be fire stopped as well. The number of sleeves required depends on the number of cables and size of tray. Use 50% fill ratio to determine the number of sleeves. Two additional spare sleeves should be installed to accommodate future cable placement. Place cable trays above drop ceilings in corridors. Do not place them above offices or inaccessible spaces. There must be at least 4 inches of vertical space between the suspended ceiling tile and the bottom of the cable tray; 12 inches of vertical clearance from the top of the cable tray to the true ceiling; and 2' total side clearance (meaning, if the cable tray is wall mounted and there is no clearance on one side, then minimum clearance on the other side should be 2'). All metallic cable trays must be grounded to the TGB but should not be used as grounding conductor for equipment. Wrap the cable with Velcro every 6 feet. Do not use wire ties since they must be cut to add cable. All conduits must go from the tray to the gang box they service and be blue in color. TCTC is standardized in using Flex Tray brand cable trays. TCTC Cabling Specifications Page 5

Conduits: Minimum of two 4 conduits that terminate outside the building to be used for telecommunications lines for commercial and intra building networking only. Each conduit should include a 3/8" pull rope, not pull string, with 200 lbs minimum tensile strength must be provided in each conduit. All conduits must be mandrilled after installation. The minimum bending radius for the conduit sweeps is 22'. The grounding bar should be located close to these conduits as it is needed primarily for the telecommunications lines. A pull box must be located on the outside of the building. The pull box must be a rust proof outdoor grade material like galvanized or stainless steel. Minimum of 4 4 conduits that connects with each network room located a floor above and below. Conduits should be run in the most direct route possible. The number of bends in the conduit should be minimized. The use of "condulets" or "LB" type fittings is not allowed. No continuous run conduit may exceed 100'. For runs more than 100 feet, pull boxes must be installed so that no segment between pull boxes exceeds 100 feet. Ground Boxes: Any ground boxes that fiber passes through must be made of fiberglass material and be at least 2 feet in size in all three dimensions (length, width, and depth) Wireless AP s and Camera Cabling: Use a two port SME207 surface mount box to terminate the jack above the ceiling. Attach this box to the side of the cable tray that is closest to the camera or AP location. If the camera or AP is far away from the tray then the box can be attached to a open stud or the drywall that is above the ceiling. Outdoor AP s Mounting and Cabling: Use indoor AP s with outdoor OMNI antennas. Mount the AP above the ceiling grid near the outer wall where the OMNI will mount on the outside of the building. Ground the bus bar to the building steel and use it for the grounding needs in the AP antenna connections. Mount the OMNI to the outside of the building and use weather resistant fire caulk around the sleeve that has been installed in the brick. Fiber Termination Boxes: brand rack mount fiber boxes will be used. Refer to the TCTC project manager for size and part number based on the number of fibers that will need to be terminated and allow room for growth. No wall mount fiber boxes will be permitted. Refer to the TCTC project manager for single mode or multi mode fiber based on the distance and application to optimize 10GB throughput for the fiber run. Pathways: To avoid electromagnetic interference (EMI), all pathways should provide clearances of at least: 4 feet from large motors or transformers 1 foot from conduit and cables used for electrical power distribution 1 foot from fluorescent lighting TCTC Cabling Specifications Page 6

Fiber Labeling: Each end of the fiber bulk head must have the corresponding closet it connects to labeled on the panel by closet name and number and each bulk head must be numbered and the box is letter Z patch panel.
