1 Subject Code and Course Number: ARBC 002 CURRICULUM Division : Social Sciences Course Title : ELEMENTARY ARABIC Summarize the need/purpose/reason for this proposal SLOs (Student Learning Outcomes) Demonstrate in learning, reading, speaking, and writing the ability to understand, initiate, and sustain conversations on a number of daily life topics and communicate effectively with Arabic speakers. Form and understand most basic sentence structures of Arabic. Write short paragraphs on familiar topics. Awareness of aspects of Arab culture connected to everyday life. SPOs (Student Performance Objectives) 1. Read with comprehension elementary Arabic texts from Arabic newspapers, magazines and similar sources. 2. Pronounce correctly and explain the meaning of words from elementary Arabic texts. 3. Both in writing and speaking Arabic, use correct grammatical principles to form diminutive and emphatic nouns, nouns which denote place or time of action, nouns for instruments, abstract nouns, plural and dual nouns, and nouns in the nominative and accusative cases. 4. Conjugate perfect verbs (past tense), imperfect verbs (present tense), the subjunctive the jussive; form masder (gerund) from the corresponding verb. 5. Both in written and spoken Arabic, understand and use compound pronouns, as interrogatives; use the relative pronouns and their gender in singular, dual, and plural form; use relative pronouns to introduce conditional sentences. 6. Use the most common subordinate conjunctions correctly in speaking and writing. 7. Recognize, read, and analyze the morphology and syntax of the cardinal and ordinal numbers, fractions and percentages. 8. Relate the reading to Arabic customs and culture. CCOs (Course Content Outline) 1. Reading elementary Arabic texts. To develop the skill of: Page 1 of 8

2 a) recognizing and pronouncing the Arabic words b) recognizing and reading sentences for comprehension c) reading articles from Arabic newspapers, magazines, and from periodical publications d) building the Arabic vocabulary 2. The Arabic grammar. To develop the skill of: a) using pattern to form diminutive and emphatic nouns, nouns which denote the place or time of an action, nouns for instruments, an abstract nouns b) forming according to patterns; plural and dual nouns c) forming masder (Gerund) from a corresponding verb d) learning the nominative and the accusative case of a noun e) using the relative pronouns and their gender in singular, dual, and plural form f) using some relative pronouns to introduce conditional sentences g) recognizing and using several pronouns as interrogatives h) conjugating: the perfect verb (past tense), imperfect verb (present tense), subjunctive and jussive i) using the most common subordinate conjunction 3. The numerals. To develop the skill of recognizing, reading, analyzing the morphology and the syntax of the cardinals, the ordinals, the fractions and the percentage. Testing: There are weekly quizzes (15 minutes) over the material covered within the week. Every third quiz is cumulative (30 minutes). The midterm examination is cumulative and comprehensive. The final examination tests the material covered from the beginning of the semester to the end.
