Special Presentation The Redesigned PSAT, SAT and ACT PERTINENT COMPARISON OF THE THREE TESTS: CONTENT, REGISTRATION & DATES, SUPER SCORING HOW TO PREPARE YOUR TEEN TO SUCCEED ON THE NEW PSAT / SAT /ACT SHOULD YOUR TEEN TAKE THE PSAT/SAT, ACT OR ALL THREE TESTS?
Why did Collegeboard revise the old PSAT / SAT? Less than half of the students who take the SAT are college ready, and that statistic has remained constant over time. Statistics cite that fifty-seven percent of students who apply to college are not prepared; thus they need remedial courses before they take the basic university level classes.
Why did Collegeboard revise the old PSAT / SAT?
How will CollegeBoard s redesign of the PSAT / SAT help my teen? The redesigned PSAT / SAT will ask students to apply a deep understanding of the few skills and content areas most important for college and career readiness skills vital to academic growth!
Why does the PSAT redesign include testing 8/9 th graders as well as 10 th graders? The new PSAT/NMSQT and PSAT Suite of Assessments will help students, parents and educators identify gaps in skills early in a student s academic career so that they can better strengthen weaknesses and be well-prepared for the SAT.
Why does the PSAT redesign include testing 8/9 th graders as well as 10 th graders? The differences in passages are one of the most important distinctions between the PSAT 8/9, PSAT 10 and PSAT/NMSQT, and SAT Reading Tests. The skills needed are similar, but as text complexity increases, the student s ability to draw on those skills becomes more crucial and the tasks more challenging.
Why does the PSAT redesign include testing 8/9 th graders as well as 10 th graders? As students advance from test to test, they ll also see: More reading questions Longer passages More passages paired with informational graphics A greater emphasis on analysis in history/social studies and analysis in science
Why does the PSAT redesign include testing 8/9 th graders as well as 10 th graders? Availability: 8 th /9 th grade PSAT available to 8 th and 9 th graders every fall starting in October 2015 and spring starting in th grade PSAT available every spring beginning in February 2016 for sophomores.
How will the redesigned PSAT/SAT help my teen more than the previous test? The redesigned PSAT will be more focused on the few things shown by current research to matter most in college and career. Students taking the redesigned test starting in October 2015, will find Questions asking them to support their answers with evidence, Vocabulary they ll use long after they ve taken the exam, and Multistep problems requiring them to apply math in real-world contexts.
How will the redesigned PSAT /SAT help my teen more than the previous test? All exams in the suite are vertically aligned, focusing on the same domain of knowledge and skills. As students progress from grade to grade, the exams will keep pace, matching the scope and difficulty of work found in the classroom.
How will the PSAT be scored? As in years past, National Merit Scholarship qualification will go to the top-scoring students (99th percentile) on the new PSAT.
How will the PSAT be scored? PSAT/NMSQT and PSAT 10 scores will be reported on a scale for the test s two components: Math as well as Evidence Based Reading & Writing. Sophomore scores will be scaled as will scores of 8th and 9th graders.
What will the PSAT/SAT incorporate & assess? Reading Test passage distribution: U.S. and World Literature - 1 passage History / Social Studies - 2 passages (one may be a paired passage) Science - 2 passages (one may be a paired passage) 2 passages will have informational graphics and range in difficulty
What will the PSAT incorporate and assess? For PSAT & SAT s Evidence-Based Reading, Writing and Language sections, the tests will: Incorporate texts spanning a consistently defined range of difficulty, including complex texts like those that high school graduates will be assigned in typical entry-level postsecondary courses in a variety of disciplines
What will the PSAT incorporate and assess? For PSAT & SAT s Evidence-Based Reading, Writing and Language sections, the tests will: Assess whether students are able to analyze source texts and use textual evidence effectively to support claims and points skills they will frequently be called on to demonstrate in postsecondary course work
What will the PSAT incorporate and assess? For PSAT & SAT s Evidence-Based Reading, Writing and Language sections, the tests will: Include informational graphics, such as tables, graphs, and charts, comparable to those that students may make use of in their postsecondary reading and writing;
What will the PSAT incorporate and For PSAT & SAT s Evidence-Based Reading, Writing and Language sections, the tests will: Devote considerable attention to word meanings and the impact of word choice, with a particular emphasis on vocabulary that students will encounter frequently in many kinds of academic and careerrelated reading assess?

Superscore your SAT and /or ACT!
SUPER SCORING for the SAT Superscoring is the process by which colleges consider your highest section scores across all the dates you took the SAT. Rather than confining your scores to one particular date, these schools will take your highest section scores, forming the highest possible composite score. On the old, pre-2016 version of the SAT, this meant taking your highest Critical Reading, Math, and Writing scores. On the current SAT, it means taking your highest Math score and your highest Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (EBRW) score across all test dates.
SUPER SCORING for the ACT If a college superscores, it will take your highest Math, Science, Reading, and English score that you achieved on any of the dates you took the test. Then it will average these together for a new composite, so you will end up with the highest composite score possible.
SUPER SCORING for the ACT Five Reasons to Superscore: 1. Hide a Weak Subject 2. Maximize Your Composite Score 3. Using the ACT s raw score to scaled score estimates, you can develop target raw scores for each section. 4. Leave No Bubble Unbubbled If out of time or unsure, use the Letter of the Day!
SUPER SCORING for the ACT Five Reasons to Superscore: 5. A Word About the Essay for SAT and ACT If you take the SAT or ACT with writing, your writing score, a.k.a. the essay, sticks out more since it is not a part of your composite. You'll receive a composite plus your essay score. However, this doesn t mean the essay should become the biggest priority on your study plan. Your subject area scores and composite score are the most important aspects of the ACT, so you should prioritize studying for the multiple-choice sections.

Final Synopsis The Redesigned PSAT (and SAT) are a tremendous improvement over the previous models of the PSAT and SAT. They will well-equip students for the challenges of college if students have the opportunity to prepare thoroughly. The ACT is also an excellent and more straightforward assessment of a student s skills. When students prepare well for any of these tests, they will learn vital skills in a spectrum of essential academic areas.
Final Synopsis To determine whether the PSAT/SAT path or the ACT path is a better choice for your teen: Assess their intended career goals: If their focus is a science related field, the ACT will showcase their prowess there more capably. If their focus is Writing, English, or Literature-related career field, the redesigned SAT will best showcase their competence.
Final Synopsis The Redesigned SAT and the ACT are quite similar now: Assess your teen s academic weaknesses: Although we desire our teens to have competence in every academic area, student weakness may showcase more visibly in one test than the other. If a student is weak in Critical Reading, the ACT has only 40 questions in contrast to the 52 questions in the Redesigned SAT. If a student is weak in Grammar / English/ Rhetoric, the Redesigned SAT has 44 questions as opposed to the 75 questions in the ACT.
Final Synopsis The Redesigned SAT and the ACT are quite similar now: Assess your teens academic weaknesses: Although we desire our teens to have competence in every academic area, student weakness may showcase more visibly in one test than the other. If a student is weak in Science, the Redesigned SAT has only a few Science passages in the Critical Reading & Writing sections If a student is weak in Math, the Redesigned SAT has 57 questions in 80 minutes while the ACT has 60 questions in 60 minutes. However, the ACT s questions are straightforward.
Final Synopsis Your teen has a better opportunity to prepare well for college than ever before through diligent preparation for the Redesigned PSAT, SAT and /or ACT / ACT Aspire. More scholarships are available to students with scores in SAT and ACT
Final Synopsis Your teen will be more comfortable with either the ACT or SAT; one of them will showcase their competence best! For our teens to be an academic success, diligent work and a renewed focus to strengthening their academic foundation are paramount!
Final Synopsis Through One Day Academy and private tutorials, I teach the PSAT, SAT and ACT, offering personal feedback and personalized instruction to help students grow as well as excel in their scholastic quest towards college. Some accomplishments of my students: 7 National Merit students last year. One student on a $200,000 scholarship and 6 more on scholarships between $60, ,000! Diligent students have grown as much as 810 points on the old SAT (490 on the new SAT!) and 12 points on the ACT!
Impassioning students for learning, life and serving the Lord! Final Synopsis Viv Lynn Director : Standards of Excellence Ken Lynn - Manager : Standards of Excellence Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire. William Butler Yeats
