Introduction The SAT provides a valid, nationally consistent measure of what students have learned and how well they apply that knowledge.* The SAT is the nation s most widely used college entrance examination. Colleges use SAT scores: As one of several factors to make admission decisions As a check against grade inflation and variation in high school programs For class placement and scholarship opportunities *Along with high school grades, the SAT is the best predictor of college success.

Why the SAT It s more than just a test. The SAT is one of the first steps on your path to college. It can help connect you to the College Board s college planning resources, where you can learn more about the application process, access financial aid tools, explore majors and find the right college fit.

Why the SAT It s one path to financial support and scholarships. The SAT can help connect you to scholarship organizations. Many colleges also use it for merit awards, and some even allow you to place out of certain classes, saving you money. It s fair to everyone. The SAT was first developed to help level the playing field in the college admission process. It still does so today. The questions are thoroughly researched and tested to make sure students from all backgrounds have an equal chance to succeed.

Where the SAT Fits The SAT is just one factor among many that colleges consider when making an admission decision. Primary Factors Quality/Rigor of Academic Courses Academic Performance/Grades Test Scores (SAT, SAT Subject Tests, AP, etc.) Additional Factors Extracurricular Activities Essay(s) Letters of Recommendation Demonstrated Interest

What the SAT Measures The SAT measures what you know and how well you apply that knowledge. It tests the same things taught every day in high school classrooms: reading, writing and math. SAT questions represent high school curricula, testing skills in geometry, algebra, grammar and critical reading. Teachers and educators review every SAT question for relevance and coherence. The critical thinking skills that the SAT tests are 21st-century skills that will help you succeed in college.

Fairness The SAT is the most rigorously researched and designed standardized test in the world. Every question goes through internal and external reviews, including sensitivity review to avoid concerns with: Gender Ethnicity Disabilities War/Violence Every question is field-tested and eliminated if students from different groups perform differently.

Test Details Three sections: critical reading, mathematics and writing Length: 3 hours, 45 minutes (including three breaks) Score range: per section, overall Question types: Critical Reading Sentence Completions, Reading Passages Mathematics Number and Operations, Algebra, Geometry, Statistics and Probability Writing Essay, Identifying Errors, Improving Grammar and Usage

When to Test Most students benefit from taking the SAT twice: once in the spring of their junior year, and again in the fall of senior year. Students who take the SAT a second time usually increase their score. Taking the SAT more than twice does not result in further significant score gains. You should only pursue more than two tests if you were ill or felt significantly impaired during a previous exam.

Getting Ready for the SAT Select challenging high school courses. Read widely and write extensively, both in and out of school. Take the PSAT/NMSQT as a sophomore or junior. Become familiar with SAT question types, format and directions. Take advantage of free College Board resources at sat.collegeboard.com.

Getting Ready for the SAT 9 th Grade Start with the end in mind! 12 A Little Practice Goes a Long Way Research is clear that cramming and short-term test prep aren t effective substitutes for hard work in school. To feel comfortable and confident on test day, it s a good idea to be familiar with the test format and question types. Like anything else in life, a little practice never hurts.

SAT Question of the Day 13

SAT: Registration Photo New! Students can upload registration photos directly from FaceBook Tips for helping students avoid pitfalls: Encourage students to carefully read through the SAT photo requirements Let students know that they are responsible for ensuring that their photo meets the requirements: Successful upload of a photo does not indicate that the photo is acceptable for test day Admission Tickets with photos that do not meet the requirements and cannot be easily recognized as the test-taker cannot be accepted Students may make updates to their admission ticket photo or personal information (name, date of birth, high school or gender) after registering by contacting Customer Service no later than the Friday 8 days prior to their test date, by 8 p.m. ET. No changes may be made after that time.

SAT: Reflecting the Changes In Education Imagine if the SAT still looked like this... Each group contains six words. Three of these are related to each other in some definite way. Indicate which three are thus MOST CLOSELY RELATED by inserting the number of these words in the spaces at the right. silver, platinum, amethyst, coinage, emerald, sapphire (Page from the original 1926 SAT)

Score Reporting Students receive four free score reports with every SAT registration. Take advantage of these up to nine days after a test administration. Orders of more than four, or orders outside the registration period, are subject to a fee. Students can use Score Choice to choose the scores they send to colleges (according to each college s score-use practice).

Score Choice Score Choice enables you to choose which scores you send to colleges by test date for the SAT and by individual test for the SAT Subject Tests. Score Choice can be used on any score report that you send, including the four reports included with registration. Score Choice is an optional feature, and you should follow each college s stated score-use practice when using it. Colleges and universities will only receive the scores that you send them your scores will not be released for admission purposes without your specific consent.

More Than Just a Test As a program of the College Board, the SAT includes access to many academic and college planning resources, including: College Search: the Web s most comprehensive database of college profiles, which can help students find the right fit My College QuickStart : a college and career planning resource powered by PSAT/NMSQT results More information on: Financial aid Scholarships AP

Student Search Service Don t miss this opportunity to introduce yourself to colleges! How It Works: You say yes to Student Search Service during registration. We send your information to colleges, universities, scholarship programs and nonprofit educational opportunity organizations that are looking for students like you.
