1 SPONSORS THIRD TERM NEWSLETTER 2016 (September November) The Third Term marked the end of the school Year 2016 calendar in DGS. The term was unusually shorter than other terms and all activities moved at a fast pace right from the start. The staff and children all joined in the rush to complete everything before the end of term on 27th October. Children s Welfare The last day of term was of great joy and expectation as Class KG 3 finally graduated to Class One level. The staff, fellow pupils and parents were all jubilant to share the cheerful day. Thirty-eight pupils marched into the hall with their teachers. Each received a Certificate of Excellence to take home. The rest of the classes top performers and achievers received prizes to mark their achievements. The school now takes a long break all the way through to January. Class KG 3 graduation with their teachers, the Director and some Parents

3 Page 3 The School Dancing Group presented a traditional African dance. This dance had been recorded for the UK s African themed fundraising event Class KG3 pupils each had a presentation to make to the rest of the school pupils, the staff and the parents present Dr Kemba, the would-be Guest of Honour from the US, joined the Ceremony through a Video recording she had sent. She was unable to make it for this year s event and sent her regards. All present enjoyed the video full of greetings that she had sent. 4 Page 4 The Top performers of each class in the End of Term 3 exams were awarded prizes. Other pupils were also awarded prizes for their outstanding individual performance in various disciplines such as Sports, Health and Sanitation and Leadership roles. Prizes included bags donated by the UK DC charity and assorted stationery donated by sponsor and former volunteer, Janette. The Top performers of each class, and other pupils achieving outstanding results in other disciplines, were awarded prizes. Top performing pupils attended the trip to Domino s for a Pizza Treat that also included learning how to make pizza. It was the first time the pupils had eaten pizza. It was a phenomenal moment for the whole group and they all pledged to work even harder in the following examinations. DGS thank Dr Kemba for the generous donation towards making the treat such a success. The support of both parents and teachers ensured the day was a total success. The Food and cake were provided by sponsors Regina and Bernd from Germany who visited the school earlier that month. 6 After a long year of preparation, the Class 8 of 2016 finally sat for their Primary Level Examinations. Like previous years, the examinations ran smoothly and all pupils maintained a clean bill of health. They leave DGS full of hope as they await their examinations results. Page 6 Class 8 sat their KCPE examinations. The Kenya Certificate of Primary Education is the main marker used to join High Schools across the country Class 8 pupils were joined by a few parents after the examinations for encouragement and a word of advice. The entire staff and parents wish them all the best as they seek to join High Schools after New Year. Class of 2016 expressed their heartfelt gratitude and wrote a letter to their sponsors. 7 Page 7 Parents encouraging and giving advice to the Class 8 pupils Visitors News It was a great joy when Regina and Bernd paid a visit to Destiny Garden School this October. They are both keen supporters and sponsors of the school and have visited the DGS on several occasions. Regina and Bernd had time to wish the Class Eight candidates a successful time during their final Examinations. They were particularly pleased to see the kitchen which they helped build and which has been recently repainted with funds raised by sponsor Rebecca Lo. 8 Page 8 Staff News Regular staff meetings are held and on 12 th September issues covered included pupils attendance, timekeeping, training and academic performance. These meetings bring staff together and enhance a team work spirit. Staff meetings are important in DGS Team Building In September, DGS welcomed back Madam Janet and Madam Naomi who returned from maternity leave. They were greatly missed. The school is glad to have them back and they are already settled as classes resumed. Madam Naomi is back from maternity leave doing what she does best DGS welcomed Mr. Brian who is covering for Madam Irene Beth who is on maternity leave. He has been a great support to the entire staff providing much needed energy especially with the many activities in the short Third Term. Here he is pictured distributing exercise books. 9 Page 9 Our thanks go to the teaching staff who have worked hard during the year to ensure the children receive a good education. This is a team made up of dedicated individuals driving to meet their set goals to help some of the disadvantaged children in this area. Thanks also to our DGS Directors, Jacob and Brenda, who have ensured DGS had an The DGS Teaching Staff DGS Directors: Brenda and Jacob The cooks have worked tirelessly to produce a nutritious lunch for all 420 children during the term, and indeed the whole year. Masika, the school administrator and librarian, has been very key in ensuring non-teaching matters run smoothly. Our thanks go to all the staff who have worked hard during the year to ensure the children receive a good education. 10 Page 10 Children News A group of seven from Rotary Club of Mombasa visited DGS during August. They were shown around the compound to see the school's developments, and had the opportunity to interact and bond with the children and teachers. They brought sweets, fruit juice and chocolate biscuits, much to the excitement of the children. The group looks forward to more visits to DGS. Rotary Club of Mombasa made a much awaited trip to DGS and experienced what life is like for the children. In October, it was a great surprise and a special moment for the class five pupils and their teacher when they received a rare treat to celebrate Belinda's Birthday. The class had a huge cake to share, biscuits, delicious eclairs sweets and mango fruit juice as they sang happy songs. This was made possible by sponsors Steve and Heather who also helped fund the special meal during the Closing Day Celebrations Class 5 pupils received a rare treat to celebrate Belinda's Birthday

11 Page 11 During the school day, the children have two breaks and a lunch hour. Most of this time is used in playing different games outside the class. They are very constructive in how they spend their breaks. A team of boys take responsibility of the school goats and in the afternoons they bring them back from the fields to the school compound before going home. DGS children are very constructive in how they spend their breaks In September, correspondence between sponsors and children continued. This is normally used as part of the English lesson where a pupil reads out the sponsor s letter to the class. In return, they all help put together a draft response to be sent back to the sponsor. Reading and writing letters help improve a child s language skills

13 Page 13 We wish the Class 8 success and a joyous time as they wait for their Examination Results. They have a long holiday in which to relax and think about life ahead at High School. Africa Watoto, coordinated by Stella Bill, has provided funds for the Kindergarten Children s lunches this term, and indeed throughout the whole year.
