What is this course about? 1.1 Course description This course addresses integration of theory and practice in a human services context. You will further explore counselling values, theories, knowledge and skills in an integrated, safe, supportive and supervised setting. You will also focus on skills appropriate to core theoretical approaches in counselling and supervision so that you can describe, analyse and utilise these skills. Counselling methods are experienced, knowledge and theories applied, and skills developed. This course will deepen your focus on your skills as a reflective practitioner. 1.2 Course content becoming a beginning counselling practitioner appropriate interpersonal skills therapeutic communication skills counselling methods, knowledge and skills working within limits of competence ethical practice self-awareness and self-care appropriate use of self 2. 4 Page 4 Assessment Task 1: Active participation in workshops Goal: You will demonstrate your understanding of counselling theory and skills and your practice framework through active participation in group discussions. Product: Participation in workshops Format: You will discuss identified links between counselling theory and skills and the supervision processes on placement and in group counselling supervision sessions. You will discuss how you prepare for supervision on placement. Criteria Attendance as per ACA/PACFA Field Placement requirements; Demonstrate active participation in workshop developing a self-reflective approach to your practice; Discuss analysis of supervision processes; Demonstrate practice knowledge of theory and skills using placement examples; Demonstrate ethical and reflective thinking; Evidence of articulation and understanding of the principles of counselling theories, methods and skills. Generic skill assessed Skill assessment level Communication Organisation Assessment Task 2: Workshop presentation Goal: You will demonstrate a clear understanding of your placement agency and how supervision is provided in the agency. You will present a reflection on supervision and the different types of supervision from an ethical and professional position using examples to demonstrate your position. You are required to highlight your reflection on the ACA/PACFA Code of Ethics. Product: Oral presentation Format: The presentation will be ten (10) minutes covering: a) An analysis of the placement agency building on the presentation requirements for Placement 1; b) How supervision is experienced in an agency in the context of counselling and supervision theory; c) Ethical and professional practices in counselling practice; d) Ethical and professional practices in placement and campus based supervision; e) Examples supporting your presentation. Criteria Develop critical self-reflection, supported by evidence; Develop clarity of the relationship of ethics and theories to a practice setting; Use Logical argument, including presentation and organisation. 5 Assessment Task 3: Essay Page 5 Goal: You will discuss with a critically self-reflective lens on your professional and ethical counselling practice, identifying, explaining and describing your practice and supervision experience. You will highlight practice and supervision styles, ethical practice and refer to theory. Product: Written essay, 2000 words Format: Your essay will include: a) Your observations of the organisation including aims of the agency, legislation, and theory underpinning the agency; b) The role of counselling in the agency, identifying gaps in service provision; c) Significant learning experiences in relation to your knowledge, skills, values and ethics; d) Analysis of organisational systems and processes that impacted upon your practice e) reflection on a particular incident or intervention that you experienced during placement; f) Critically reflect and analyse your supervision experience in the agency in the context of counselling and supervision theory; g) Your ethical and professional practices in counselling supervision; h) Identification of different supervision styles; i) Use of examples supporting your position; j) Description of key theories, knowledge, methods and skills, supported by ethics that will help inform your future practice. Criteria Demonstrate an understanding of the organisational context of practice and the application; Critical self-reflection of counselling theory and frameworks within the context of your work in the agency; Provide evidence of how your skills and knowledge developed during the fieldwork placement; Strengths of supervision on placement and what you would do differently as a practitioner; Application of theories, skills and knowledge to your placement; Appropriate use of ethical and confidentiality considerations; Clearly presented essay, which will be organised and logically ordered; Reference and document evidence through correct use of citations, quotations and reference list; Correct use of grammar, punctuation, spelling and clear quality of expression. 6 Page 6 Assessment Task 4: Code of Conduct Goal: This task enables you to become familiar with the Counselling WIL Code of Conduct for your discipline and work within its guidelines during a work integrated learning (WIL) experience. Product: WIL experience in accordance with the Counselling WIL Code of Conduct Format: During your WIL experience you are required to complete 250 hours of work experience To be eligible to pass, you are required to complete the internship satisfactorily according to the criteria below. See Blackboard for your Counselling WIL Code of Conduct. Criteria: The academic placement supervisor will evaluate your standard and quality of your work and make an assessment against the following criteria: Behaviour that is in accordance with the Counselling WIL Code of Conduct; Adherence to the Counselling WIL Code of Conduct and the Student Placement Agreement; Completion of the required 250 hours. Generic Skill assessed Skill Assessment Level Communication Graduate Collaboration Graduate Organisation Graduate * Australian Counselling Association (ACA) Accreditation of Counsellor Education Courses and Code of Ethics. * Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA) Training Standards. 5.3 Additional assessment requirements Plagiarism In order to minimise incidents of plagiarism and collusion, this course may require that some of its assessment tasks, when submitted to Blackboard, are electronically checked through SafeAssign. This software allows for text comparisons to be made between your submitted assessment item and all other work that SafeAssign has access to. Limited Graded Course: This course will be graded as Pass in a Limited Grade Course (PU) or Fail in a Limited Grade Course (UF) as per clause and of the Grades and Grade Point Average (GPA) - Institutional Operating Policy of the University of the Sunshine Coast. In a course using Limited Grades, all assessment tasks relating to a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) activity or a professional competency (PC) task are required to be passed for a student to successfully complete the course. Supplementary assessment is not available in courses using Limited Grades. 5.4 Submission penalties You must contact your Course Coordinator if you require an extension or alternate assessment. 6. It is important to discuss this with the field education coordinator at the pre-placement interview. 7.4 Risk management There is minimal health and safety risk in this course.
