What is this course about? 1.1 Course description This course advances your knowledge in the principles of nursing practice in the Emergency context. This course covers triage, advanced health assessment and emergency care of the client with acute health alteration, trauma or environmental exposure is explored. You will be required to demonstrate competency in the clinical environment and will be expected to have access to workplace based clinical. Essential to emergency care and included in this course are advanced communication skills, and clinical problem solving skills. 1.2 Course content This course covers recent developments in triage, and advance health practice within the emergency department setting including: Principles of emergency care: - Implementing the Australasian Triage Score - Advanced Health Assessment - Scope of practice in the emergency environment Triage Pain assessment and management, nurse initiated analgesia Advanced Skills: venepuncture, cannulation, blood gases, airway management, non-invasive, CPAP and BiPAP, management of central and arterial lines, splinting and plastering, protocol initiated X-rays. Care of the patient with severe chest pain: cardiovascular physiology, pharmacology Care of the patient with severe respiratory distress: respiratory physiology, pharmacology Care of the patient with obstetric emergencies Care of the multi-trauma patient Care of the patient in diabetic ketoacidosis, endocrine physiology, pharmacology Care of the patient with simple trauma (fracture, blunt injury, wound management) Care of the patient with poisoning and environmental injury Care of the patient in shock Care of the patient with burns Version Semester Recfind File Number: F14125

You will research and further develop your expertise in nursing case management and demonstrate that knowledge in the production of a clinical case study and management plan. Students will be provided with a complex case study and are required to discuss the management of a patient that presents to the emergency department word case study Students will demonstrate the following criteria: Assess, plan, implement and evaluate comprehensive emergency nursing care to complex clinical nursing presentations. Demonstrate organisational and collaboration skills in triage Critical reflection on issues in need of improvement in emergency nursing practice drawing on relevant literature Advocate for timely care using advanced communication skills Apply the relevant legal and ethical principles to complex emergency situations

4 Page 4 Apply advanced reflective critical thinking Use of academic literacy conventions including the use of APA (6 th edn) referencing, structure and grammar. Generic skill assessed Skill assessment level Problem solving Organisation Collaboration Assessment Task 3: Emergency cases and emergency care trends essay Goal: Product: Format: Criteria You will research the clinical management of common emergency presentations and develop expertise in the clinical management of emergency conditions. This task is designed to demonstrate the authentic practice of clinical management for a client who progresses through the emergency department. You will research and further develop your expertise in nursing case management and demonstrate that knowledge in the production of a clinical management plan. Students will select 2 of the 4 clinical cases and provide a comprehensive review of current treatments of these emergency conditions. Students will produce 2 x 1500 word essays outlining the evolving care trends of these emergency conditions Students will demonstrate the following criteria: Assess, plan, implement and evaluate comprehensive emergency nursing care to complex clinical nursing presentations including the emerging trends for these conditions. Apply advanced reflective critical thinking Critical reflection on issues in need of improvement in emergency nursing practice drawing on relevant literature Advocate for timely care using advanced communication skills Apply the relevant legal and ethical principles to complex emergency situations. Use of academic literacy conventions including the use of APA (6 th edn) referencing, structure and grammar. Generic skill assessed Skill assessment level Organisation Problem solving Collaboration 5.3 Additional assessment requirements Eligibility for Supplementary Assessment Your eligibility for supplementary assessment in a course is dependent of the following conditions applying: a) The final mark is in the percentage range 47% to 49.4% b) The course is graded using the Standard Grading scale c) You have not failed an assessment task in the course due to academic misconduct Blackboard As a student enrolled in this course you will have access to course information on the Blackboard site. You are strongly recommended to log onto the course site on a regular basis. All course announcements, course changes, posting of course materials and grades (via My Interim Results) will be accessed through Blackboard. It is your responsibility to ensure you have adequate internet access (either off campus or oncampus) in order to access Blackboard regularly and to complete required assessment tasks.

5 Page 5 Safe Assign In order to minimise incidents of plagiarism and collusion, this course may require that some of its assessment tasks are submitted electronically via Safe Assign. This software allows for text comparisons to be made between your submitted assessment item and all other work that Safe Assign has access to. If required, details of how to submit via Safe Assign will be provided on the Blackboard site of the course. 5.4 Submission penalties Late submission of assessment tasks will be penalised at the following maximum rate: 5% (of the assessment task s identified value) per day for the first two days from the date identified as the due date for the assessment task. 10% (of the assessment task s identified value) for the third day 20% (of the assessment task s identified value) for the fourth day and subsequent days up to and including seven days from the date identified as the due date for the assessment task. A result of zero is awarded for an assessment task submitted after seven days from the date identified as the due date for the assessment task. Weekdays and weekends are included in the calculation of days late. To request an extension you must contact your course coordinator to negotiate an outcome. 6.
