What is this course about? 1.1 Course description Business Analytics (BA) involves analysing vastly increasing amounts of data in order to gain insight into existing performance and to assist in future planning. Furthermore, new sensor technology creates data to uncover new information and correlations that were previously unknown. This course is designed to provide managers with an understanding of business analytics and its underlying statistical methodologies, and how BA and Business Intelligence are interrelated. The course will use SPSS statistical software and make reference to IBM Cognos Insight as a business intelligence platform. 1.2 Course content Analytical competition Using analytics to understand and improve business performance Competing in business using analytics Pathways to the achievement of enhanced analytical capabilities Managing analytical staff in business contexts Analytical competition in the future 2. Specific Learning Outcomes Assessment Tasks Qualities On successful completion of this course you should be able to: Review and evaluate the present approaches to Business Analytics (BA) both nationally and internationally. Determine the relevant aspects of a BA initiative within a presented context. Evaluate the opportunities and gaps of a BA initiative within a specified case (as determined by the student). SafeAssign SafeAssign Assessment Task 1: Business Analysis Report Goal: In this assessment you will review the present level and uptake of BA both nationally and internationally and relate various approaches to their own context. Product: Written report. Format: This task requires you to recognise how business analytics can be used in a business setting and provides you with an awareness of the managerial perspectives associated with the use of Business Analytics. It requires you to conduct an analysis of the use of analytics in a business situation. At the EMBA level, we would expect you to be familiar with a business you are working in or a business you own yourself and in this case we would expect you to use that as your case study, however if that is not the case, you can select a third party business that you have some knowledge of. You are required to critically evaluate the benefits of the implemented BA system in terms of business applications, target groups, IT infrastructure and security, and BA platform (to be) used. Criteria An awareness and appreciation of how BA can be used to improve competitiveness in business. Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the managerial implications of using BA. Evaluate and synthesis the given context to identify future initiatives stemming from a BA approach. Communicate effectively in writing (spelling, referencing, report format). Generic skill assessed Skill assessment level Communication Problem solving Information literacy Assessment Task 2: Managerial Business Analytics Report Goal: Product: Format: In this assessment you will take the relevant aspects of BA and apply it to your own business case, where you will decide on a BA application for your chosen company and practise the use of BA techniques used in the course, with relevant conclusions and proposed business actions. Data sets may be provided for analysis in absence of own business data. Written report and appendices that analyses and discusses your own case study and related BA initiatives, with insights gathered from your analysis. This assessment item will provide you with an appreciation of the benefits of analytics and the competitive advantages that can accrue from its implementation through discussions of a case study of your own company or a company selected by you. You

4 Page 4 will decide on a BA application for your company and analyse the managerial implications of its implementation using BA techniques used in the course, with relevant conclusions and proposed business actions. Criteria Analyse a given business situation, establishing the benefits and drawbacks of the BA approach using BA techniques used in the course, with relevant conclusions and proposed business actions. Determine if, and what, competitive advantage/s is obtained from the BA initiative. Evaluate and synthesise the given situation, determining appropriate recommendations that may be extended to other contexts. Communicate effectively in writing (spelling, referencing, report format). Generic skill assessed Skill assessment level Problem solving Applying technologies Information literacy 5.3 Additional assessment requirements SafeAssign In order to minimise incidents of plagiarism and collusion, this course may require that some of its assessment tasks are submitted electronically via SafeAssign. This software allows for text comparisons to be made between your submitted assessment item and all other work that SafeAssign has access to. If required, details of how to submit via SafeAssign will be the site of the course. Eligibility for Supplementary Assessment Your eligibility for supplementary assessment in a course is dependent of the following conditions applying: a) The final mark is in the percentage range 47% to 49.4% b) The course is graded using the Standard Grading scale c) You have not failed an assessment task in the course due to academic misconduct 5.4 Submission penalties Late submission of assessment tasks will be penalised at the following maximum rate: 5% (of the assessment task s identified value) per day for the first two days from the date identified as the due date for the assessment task. 10% (of the assessment task s identified value) for the third day 20% (of the assessment task s identified value) for the fourth day and subsequent days up to and including seven days from the date identified as the due date for the assessment task. A result of zero is awarded for an assessment task submitted after seven days from the date identified as the due date for the assessment task. Weekdays and weekends are included in the calculation of days late. To request an extension you must contact your course coordinator to negotiate an outcome. 6.
