(required to access course information.) Course Description: Study Guide for Anatomy and Physiology 6 th Ed. Thibodeau and Patton Brief Atlas of the Human Body, 6 th Ed. Thibodeau and Patton This course provides a study of the structure and function of the human body. Students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the working principles of anatomy and physiology and their interrelationships from the chemical and cellular levels through the organ systems. This course meets the requirements for non-science major anatomy and physiology courses. Check with your particular program/college to inquire about credit for this specific course. This course will meet one of the two courses required for anatomy and physiology for any Midland College HITT degree/certificate. Course Objectives: 1. Understand and use a vocabulary of anatomical terminology. 2. Illustrate a rudimentary knowledge of how chemistry and homeostasis play a role in living systems.
2 2 3. To distinguish between organic and inorganic compounds. 4. Identify and explain cell structure and function. 5. Identify and explain tissue structure and function. 6. Locate anatomical structures of organs and organ systems. 7. Explain the physiological functions of the human body systems and their interrelationships. 8. Compare and contrast carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, nucleic acids, and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) in terms of building blocks, structure, synthesis, and functions in the human body. 9. Identify the organelles of a cell, to describe their structure, and to discuss the major functions of each. 10. Explain the various mechanisms involved with movement across the plasma membrane. 11. Name the major tissue types and their chief subcategories. Be able to describe structure and give functions and locations in the body. 12. Name the constituent parts for each of the eleven organ systems and explain how they function. 13. Describe the homeostatic relationships between each system and the other body systems. 14. Relate homeostatic imbalance to human disease with examples. 15. Identify bones and major features on the human skeleton 16. Identify locations of muscles on the human body 17. Identify tissue types and locations 18. Define the types and processes of membrane transport
3 3 Evaluation Criteria: A total of 889 points are possible in this course. The listing of points is as follows: Lab 3 System Suite Exams 86 Self-Assessments located in System Suite Exams. 90 Lab Module Exams not with system suites. 80 Section Exams 50 points 250 Final 200 Discussion Boards 10 points 150 Participation 20 Essay (Semester Project) 50 Total Points 926 Letter Grade by total points A B C D <571 F Chapters 1 16 will be covered for SCIT 1407: Section Exams (5) as follows: Ch. 1-5; Ch. 6-8; Ch. 9-11, Ch.12-14, Ch.15 & 16. Late Work: There will be no make-up for quizzes or tests. There will be no late assignments accepted. There will be NO extra credit given. If you know in advance you will be gone for a test or an emergency comes up, please call me, or me. Discussion board: Weekly posts to discussion board are required. Check this frequently during the semester. Questions about content or assignments may also be asked here. This avenue of communication is preferred unless the information is personal in nature or relates to an individual s grades. Discussion Board is meant to build upon one another s comments. No criticism; just criticalthinking. Everyone must participate in order to receive credit for these required laboratory components of this course. A) Questions about course or assignments: Questions should be posted on the discussion board. The posts will be answered daily except for weekends. This form of communication is important in online courses. This tool will help you stay connected to other classmates and it will help you ask those questions just as if you were in an actual classroom setting. B) Discussion board assignments will also be used as a participation tool and part of your grade is based on participation/attendance and the content of the posts. Responses should reflect knowledge gained from readings and website research or personal experience. Posts/Responses and should be a minimum of 100 words. DO NOT COPY AND PASTE MATERIAL FOR YOUR RESPONSES. When posting a response to the discussion board about a topic, post your original response before reviewing other classmate s postings. Then, read the other postings and respond to at least two other students for full credit for participation.
4 4 Only when the content of the question is personal in nature should the instructor be ed. Remember some addresses give instructors absolutely no clue as to who sent it and many times instructors teach more than just one course. Attendance: Because this is strictly an internet course, attendance will be substituted by participating on the discussion board. Absence from responding before deadline about course topic on the discussion board constitutes an absence in the course. Students who fail to complete assignments/exams for two consecutive weeks may be dropped from the course at the discretion of the instructor. Testing philosophy: Students may politely challenge the instructor on questions they feel were poorly worded. If the instructor concedes the argument, scores will be adjusted for the entire class. Assignments consist of multiple formats including multiple choice, open-ended questions and some true/false. The final examination will be comprehensive over all the material presented during the course. Academic Honesty: Students cheating on exams or assignments will be removed from the course and a grade of F will be submitted to the Registrar s office along with a memo regarding the action for the student s permanent file.
